I have imported 3 GEDCOM files of portions of the family, no duplicates. I have managed to connect two of these files by family research and I have a huge chunk (80% of the overall database) which is related within itself but is of no interest to me. How could I get rid of these 5000 names who originated in one GEDCOM file? it is very frustrating because smartsearch shows hits on these irrelevant persons
Sorry, but you have to delete them ONE BY ONE!!! I have asked for a function where I could mark multiple records for deletion (that is the NORMAL procedure in ANY database) and just press "delete", BUT MH tells me that they will NOT add such a function because then some people might accedently delete records they do not want to delete!!!! So 99% of us must suffer because 1% doesn´t know the golden rule of making a backup BEFORE they start to mass edit/delete records, or they just don´t know how to handle a database. To make changes to a tree is the responsability of the person making the changes, nobody elses.
REMEMBER to make a backup of the WHOLE library (on your computer) of your files saved with version 7.129 BEFORE you update to the new version!!!!! You might run into problems with the update resulting in NOT beeing able to open your tree.
I´m not sensitive BUT after using MH/FTB for a long time and having a LOT of troubles with large DB:s and photos (uploading them) and the fact that it takes me 5 or more minutes to update/edit/add a record..... I beleive that is NOT sensitivity, pure stating a fact. Why do you think MH has marked me as Poweruser? ;-)))))))))))))))))))))))) And as an anwer to your qustion. Yes update but follow my advice and keep a copy of the FTB program that is working so you can revert to it. I have version 7 build 7138 installed and it is working as expected (WIN 8.1) with the above mentioned problems and we are talking about a tree with about 185 00 records and 6 700 photos.
What you have to think of if you move to newer OS (Win 7 or 8) is that your computer then may need more memory. I used a Vista machine with 1 or 2 Gb memory and it was SLOW. Had 1 browser window, FTB and an archive viewer for church books running. I have now one Win7 machine with 8Gb which has no problems and one Win8 machine with only problem with the user interface :)
So if you update to MH v7 and that in turn force you to update to Win 7 or 8 which could in turn force you to add more memory. You might consider to by a new computer where you get both new Win and more memory and better CPU. The cost could be about the same.
The Lifecycle for Vista ends 2017, for Win7 2020 and for Win8 2023. XP ended this year.
Software had been working fine. Now it opens but I get the following message, "My Heritage Family Tree Builder Genealogy software has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." No solution or information is given. Is this a problem with Win 8.1 or FTB? Has anyone had this problem?
I've done a reinstall of FTB. Twice. Tried a clean boot, three times, with no luck. Still can't get in or get rid of the message. I've been running 8.1 for months without issues. These problems started after I installed "update for X64 - based system KB2919355". It changed my Icon size and rearranged them. Made other minor changes to video. Had trouble getting into Picasa 3. Received Error message "The instruction at 0x0064f07c referenced memory at 0x00000040. Memory could not be read." I reinstalled the software and it seems fine now. My first post may not have been a clear as it should have been. I've been trying to get some answers from MS. Hope they can come up with something to resolve this.
Every time I try to add a note (whether in marriage, birth etc) it goes to the "note" screen and then automatically crashes the program, saying the software has stopped working and then only giving you the option to "close program".
Please help as I have a lot of notes I want to add!
I have got a new laptop and had to download FTB again so not sure if that is anything to do with it, or whether there is a bug in the program.
PS also when I close the program and go back in, it does not go the tree that I was working on, but the tree that I had worked on previously!
