Having experienced a great deal of frustration with WorldVitalRecords.com, I was interested to see what the integration in V6 of FTB would bring.
Unfortunately, for me it's all irrelevant results and a lot of time to sort through the garbage.
For a man born and died in Canada, I got results from Australia, the UK, and the USA...but nothing from Canada!
For a man born in Kansas, died in Canada, there's more Australia, more UK, stuff from Texas, Massachusetts, Iowa, Maine.... nothing from Canada.
For a guy who never made it into Canada and died in 1944, I got results from a college in Ottawa, Canada, dated 1972, and records from the 48th Toronto (Canada) Highlanders for two men (one with the same first name and one with the same last name as my ancestor).
For four individuals I checked, there were 81 irrelevant results, an average of 20 each and about 5 minutes per person to determine that every frickin' result was totally useless. Now, 394 people in the tree @ 5 min each = I don't think I'll bother.
It will take only one good hit to make this worthwhile, but in the meantime I wish there weren't so much useless garbage to sort through.
Oh, and once I've examined all the garbage, is there any way to make the little icon disappear?
On a closer look, it turned out that the WVR search is for the name only -- dates and places were ignored, hence the ireelevant results. And the name was searched using a logical OR -- Firstname OR Middlename OR Lastname, the same sloppy search that WVR already uses, so that a search for "William Morrison True" gives results for William Alexander, Charles Morrison, Morrison Delbert Higgins, and Trueblood Deguerre (I had fun making those names up) but nothing at all for the person your'e looking for.
I think the filters really should be a little tighter! But there's no way to control how the search is conducted until you get into WVR and can add some dates and places, in which case my result is always "0 Results".
Maybe other users will have better results. If so, I look forward to hearing your good news.
Now, the profile -- wow! That looks neat and potentially useful. Love the map showing the travels. Wish the icons on the timeline could be made a lot smaller, but maybe that's in there and I haven't found it yet.
Also I was hoping that many of the suggestions from the forums made over the past years had been incorporated, such as a report for a single individual. It will take a while to see what all's there.
Shalom and Happy Hannukah/Merry Christmas to the development team.
I should have explained that I have no problem with WorldVitalRecords as an independent research tool where it is possible to filter by date, country, etc and even apply an 'Exact' filter. I have used this quite successfully, it is only the unfiltered version in FTB 6 that becomes a totally useless time waster.
I had noticed that MyH promises priority treatment to payers; that's fair enough. My reluctance to become a PM was because I wondered whether MyH had gone into hibernation. Forgive my impatience. I'm advancing in years and don't want to waste too much of what I have left. At my age one has to think twice before buying green bananas.
Happy New Year.
(I hate auto-responses. It's good to see that there is a real live person keeping their eye on the forum.)
Our Family Tree Builder software doesn't have a Mac version yet. We've received many requests for this, so producing a Mac version is definitely in our plans. In the meantime, you can wait until we have a Mac version, or continue to grow your tree online.A tree can be built online on MyHeritage.com, using a Mac. If you have a tree already and it has been published into your own family site on MyHeritage.com, we can, at your request, flip a switch so you'll be able to continue editing your tree online on your Mac, with a browser.
Please let me know if you'd like that. You can also import an existing tree into MyHeritage.com via import GEDCOM, and then continue editing it online on the Mac. Let me know if you need assistance with this.
So in the future will mac users be able to take the online stuff that they have worked on and then save it to a downloaded program on our own computers? If so, I am going to get busy! If not, I will just keep working on my reunion program for my mac.
Hi - I have just upgraded FTB to version 6. When I select 'Family site - new' then either Timeline (or Timebook) my web site home page appears with the information message "The page you were trying to visit has been specified as off limits by the Site manager". I am the site manager and it shows me as logged in. I have searched around to see if there is a setting to enable/disable Timeline and Timebook but cannot find one.
