I would suggest you like to create headaches for yourself. You really should try and do your planning in a scrap book and then enter your data in a more logical and methodical manner.
However "Family Tree Builder" can cope with your approach.
No mater what plan you are on, the features of "Adding relationships to existing people" is available.
Say for example you have added your biological mother and father and yourself separately. You would go to your mother and right click on her. A drop down list will appear with Person, Parents, Siblings, Spouses, Children, etc. Move the cursor down to Spouses, a second drop down list will appear. Select Attach a spouse, find you biological father and attach him to your mother.
Once attached, you will see they are linked with a status block. Right click in this block and it will allow you to edit the date their relationship started, the place and what their current status is, married, divorced, partners, widowed etc. Select which ever is suitable.
Then go to yourself, Right click and select attach Parents. Select your parents.
Go to any of your natural brothers or sisters and do the same.
Then go to your mother and right click on her and select spouses and add or attach her previous or current partner.
Any children from that relationship, go to them and right click them and attach your mother and their natural father as parents.
By now you are getting the picture I guess.
You should start figuring thing out for yourself from here.
You can also for example now go back to yourself and make yourself an adopted child of your mother and the second spouse by right clicking yourself and Attaching your adopted parents, You will have the option of adding the new parents as adopted parents or replacing the parents. Choose whatever is relevant.
Note well now - If you are on your natural parents you will see a solid line between them and you. If you are on your adopted parents, it will be a dotted line. You will also get the impression you are in the tree twice. You are not. One of you is a mirror image of the other one. You delete one, you delete both.
One thing puzzles me: I want to add a lot of names and details and then connect them as I find out the relationships. The prog appears to only allow you to add people with a known relationship (add father, sister, ...)
I want to pile in names and details and then relate them later (ie select two people then define their relationship). Can you do that? And, if so, how?
Many thanks,
peter
May I also add that I am trying to properly define the relationships in my family and I am unable to. For instance my Mum is not presently married to my Dad and I have siblings from my Mum that arent my Dad's kids and vice versa and I am unable to attach myself to my Mum or my dad because I would be defined as a child of either of them AND their present spouse. Im using the basic.

As a computer scientist I find it hard to believe that MyHeritage doesn't support non-ASCII characters in project names. I am Turkish and have a Turkish character (which is a C Cedilla, that is also found in other languages like French and Portuguese) in my family name. What is more natural to open a project with my family name to create my family tree? It is highly stupid to create an application to be used by people from all over the world, but simultaneously to assume that supporting only ASCII characters would suffice. Whatever the reason (I can imagine a lot of them like the company started the program only for the UK market and did not plan any expansion initially), this is one of the most primitive programs I have seen in years.
We currently do not have this, although thank you for the feedback. I will be sure to forward it to the appropriate department for consideration. We are working on it so that in the future non-ASCII charcaters will maybe be supported in Project names.
Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any other questions.
Not a really big problem, but I was wondering if there's anyway to change how the months are presented in the program and on charts and reports. I want it to show the full month name like December instead of Dec. Is that possible?
thank you for the message. Could you please give us more details? Did you try to restore them from the website? Or they are also gone? We are very sorry for the inconvenience and will try to find the source of problem.
The places are still shown on the family webpage and also under each persons profile(new feature i think) in FTB - , but not in the FTB formular (edit details for a person) where the info was once typed !
But I have send you printscreens through the mailsupport.
Thank you very much for the response and details. We will check the problem and contact you as soon as we will find a source of the problem and solution.
Once again we are very sorry for the inconvenience.
It seems there is a problem with publishing "EVERYTHING" when you publish a tree. For example, one can not RENAME photos on MyHeritage, once a tree gets published.
I am wondering if there are any problems with publishing sources, source citations, etc. and later be able to EDIT the sources and citations on-line on the MyHeritage site.
It is important to understand that when you edit a tree in Family Tree Builder and add photos there, you can only edit their details (such as name, place and date) in Family Tree Builder and then publish the changes on the site for them to appear online.
This also applies for photos- if sources originate from a tree that was published to your family site from Family Tree Builder, then they are not editable on your family site. In that case, please go into the original tree in Family Tree Builder in order to edit the source, and then republish your tree to your family site.
I've been using Family Tree Builder for a couple of years now. I have my Project files saved in a network location so that I can access them from other computers, and this has never been an issue.
Today, when I tried to create a new project, the software would not accept my file name, even though I'm using standard characters in the name, just as I did with my previous projects. I just keep getting the following message:
"An error occured while trying to create Geneology Project "TestFile". You may click 'Back' and try to create the project again, this time with a different name"
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Does anyone know the cause or have a fix?
This may be because you tried to save the file on a network location. Can you please try transferring your file to the default location in your C drive to see if it resolves this issue?
Yes, I can create projects anywhere on my PC but not on the network. The work-around I'm using for this now is to initially create the project on my local drive and then move it to the network location manually. I am then able to work on the project from that location without any issues.
I know they are working on trying to prevent the number of similar trees out there which are creating too many duplicate smart matches. I am not sure this is related to that, but it may be.
So, I can no longer access my site until I upgrade to premium. Why is this? You say it is free to use then you block me from updating it and accessing the program unless I upgrade to premium. Is this how it is? I must upgrade to continue to use it?
I have been building my Family on the free version of FTB. I would like to use the Virtual Keyboard to enter Polish letters. I cannot for the life of me find the Icon to activate, as mentioned in the Help PDF.
My Questions are;
- Should this be visible or is it a Premium feature.
- If it should be visible, why am I nopt seeing it. Is there somewhere somebody can direct me to trouble shoot this. using Windows Vista Home Premium.
When I look at my family tree on the net, my pointer is like a hand and I can move in the tree as I move the pointer/hand. Is there a possibility to have the same view on my PC? I find ït a little difficult to navigate in my tree. What am I doing wrong?
