Family Tree Builder has been tested extensively for Windows 7, however, recently Microsoft upgraded it’s Windows operating system and Windows 8 is already here. Some problems may occur when using the software in Windows 8 until we can finalize testing and this FAQ will give you a solution to fix most of the common issues you may encounter.
A few steps are required:
1) Locate your Family Tree Builder shortcut on the desktop of your computer, right click it, then choose “Properties”.
2) You will see several different tabs, navigate to the “Compatibility” tab.
3) Then change the following:
Check the box labeled “Run this program in compatibility mode for:”
and choose “Windows XP”
Check the box labeled “Run this program as an administrator”
The software should work as expected once you follow these steps.
I have exactly the same problem. You write that Family Tree Builder has been tested extensively for Windows 7, but I bought a new computer with Windows 7 (the old one was Windows Vista) and now all my notes have disappeared and also the place and description from the facts. Also all my suffixes have changed place into the small space where you can choose between Esq, I, II, III, Jr and Sr. There is also problems in adding new primary facts.
When I check on my Web Site everything is there.
I also tried the suggestion above, both with Windows Vistaand with XP (there were by the way two XP:s to chose from: Servicepack 2 and Servicepack 3) but none of them worked. My Family TRee Builder is version 188.8.131.5234 if that is any help.
I haven't been able to work on my tree since January 17th.
Mange tack Erik!
I got all the facts and notes back by going to Språk (=Language) on top of the page. There I went to advanced settings and ticked the little box saying in Swedish "samma som visningsspråk" (my English is not so good, so I don't know what it would say in English, but something like "the same as the showing/demonstrating language"). Now I hope that the rest is working as well.
Only trees that are in the family site can be restored with the smart matches that you previously confirmed/rejected saved. This is because once the family tree dissappears from the family site, we no longer hold records of these smart matches results.
We are planning to improve the system, but for the time being this is the way it currently works.
When browsing through family records I sometimes try to find out if some of my distant relatives has a facebook page. If I find one, and they have a photo I can use, I store the photo on my file server. If I open the folder in Explorer the newly saved image is listed (of course), but if I browse using Family Tree Builder the image file doesn't always show up until a minute later. Sometimes I even have to refresh or open and close the folder in Explorer to make the image appear in FTB.
Thank you for the message. It sounds like you are saving it on a browser. We would recomend that you save the file as a JPG or PNG. You need to right click on the photo and save it is as JPG or PNG file. This way you can upload it to our site.
Each time I have changed some information in Family Tree Builder a "Reminder for publishing..." (in Norwegian) is displayed. I click the No button everytime ("Don't setup a page and don't offer me this later for this project").
One of the most annoying BUGS ever, and I am close to terminating my shortlived use of this application for this reason alone. :(
Thank you for the message. You can choose not to publish your Family Tree Builder tree to your site. You can find details here: http://www.myheritage.com/help/2012/08/can-i-choose-not-to-publish-my-family-tree-builder-tree-to-my-site/
If you ever wanted to create a family address book for all the extended family you can do so by running the Addresses report from FTB, saving the report as a PDF file and then emailing the file to a service like Ringya (www.ringya.com) which will then convert the data into contacts on your phone.
Full disclosure: I am the founder of Ringya (and am also a MyHeritage user since 2007)
