I have the same problem with Spanish and French characters. I have noticed that HTML codes were the origin of it. We are a lot of people reporting the same problem to the staff of My Heritage. Problem with "foreign" characters in fact notes also appear in the FTB app for Iphone. I've written them several messages but since a week I have no answers.
We are working to solve the issue with the swedish characters not being displayed correctly. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We are doing our best to catch up with the complaints we get from our customers and to try and solve everything as fast as possible.
After the upgrade to v.7 (7101) I've noticed several text fields containing HTML code.
I know for sure they were not there initially. The text itself are copied from some webpage, so it explains the HTML code. It does not explain why FTB store such things nor does it explain why FTB didn't strip away the code like any other simple editor would do.
When you copy text from some webpage and paste the text in to a simple editor (eg: Notepad) HTML code are stripped off the text, you will never see it again.
So basically, if you copied text from some webpage during v.6 you can expect to find your data messed up with HTML code if you upgrade to FTB 7.
I'm having the same problem. I noticed it when I printed my project in "book" report format. Many of the people in my report that have anything in the notes are difficult to read because of the codes. I didn't even realize what they were at first as I don't do much work with html codes. When I went in to fix the problem, the notes look fine. It's just in the printed/pdf version for me. I copied one of the entries below (book date was Feb 2013).

Also, if you have created the book report on the family site, I would recommend you trying to make it in the family tree builder, and if it's the opposite then try to make it in the site. As one of them should show you the appropriate result.
I apologize for any inconvenience that was caused from the problem.
(Note that my English is not good, then forgive me my mistakes!) I've noticed the same problem and I have reported it to My Heritage Spanish support team, but, after a week, I still don't have a solution.
The problem, specially in notes, also appears in all the reports and in the Iphone FTB app. Notes created in the previous version of the FTB remains ok in reports, because they weren't created with HTML code.
I also use to create “Book report” with “The complete Genealogy Report” and to export to Geneanet web site but now is a disaster and I had to stop until have a solution.
We understand that you both have problems with the HTML tags appearing, we would be glad if you could supply us with more information regarding the problem. It is true that HTML tags are hidden when you copy from web to our editor.
However the bug here is that the representation of the data is shown incorrectly.
We will need the following in order to investigate the issue correctly:
1) Step-by-step instructions to reproduce
2) Screenshots if you can get
3) Specify what reports does this happen to, and if it happens to charts as well.
4) Specify whether it only affects notes or any other resources (such as sources or citations)
Let us know so we can investigate, reproduce the problem and eventually solve it.
We appreciate your effort on bringing this to our attention and we would be more than glad to help you in any way possible.
I will make an attempt to reproduce this, and I would even provide screenshots if I was allowed to add attachments on the forum. I've tried several times in other bug reports, but the forum will not accept them (no error messages though).
Last night before I closed FTB I did a save, a backup and a sync. This morning I loaded my browser and went to my online site. While looking around I discovered an unknown. Loaded FTB, found the unknown and unchecked the private box. I then did a sync. During the sync it uploaded 6.6 meg to the online site. Why is the upload so large just for unchecking a box?
That is just funny. 6.6 MB, it probably uploaded the entire tree, not just the changed data.
My tree contains about 2000 individuals, the exported GED file in plain text is about 1.7 MB
I can see you have about 9000 individuals in your published tree. If my 2000 makes about 1.7 MB, your 9000 could very well be about 6.6 MB, all depending on how much data you have written in notes and so on.
Even so, if it uploaded the entire tree as it looks like, it's just funny. You are right asking questions about such behavior.
I totally understand you George, when you pay for something like you have done (with probably thousands of others) it's not funny at all.
To clear out any misunderstandings, it was supposed to be "funny", not funny. I could have used stronger and other words, but I fear that it could have been a violation of the Terms and Conditions using this site:
"You may not:
Use our Website or Service in a way that might damage our name or reputation."
Well, I guess that is "funny" too, let people pay for something and then make them feel like beta testers. I suppose that's a way to damage ones own reputation.... I totally understand your frustration George, I do.
Having said that, I think FTB "always" (v.6) uploaded quite large files (large content of data), but I can not tell for sure.
Thank you both for writing and asking these questions.
What happens when you sync your family tree builder project is that we take all of the project and upload it to the server. Which means that if you have added some pictures and videos to your family tree it might take some time.
All your information (except for photos and any media files) are saved in one file which is a variation of a GEDCOM v 5.5 file. We called our file variation a "ZEDCOM" in Family Tree Builder 6.0, and we have recently changed it to a "UZEDCOM".
The GEDCOM file is a widely used format of files to store information in a database form for family trees. You can search for it online.
The information file (UZED) will not take a lot of space in your computer. However if you add photos to your project they will need to be attached with the file of the family tree to the servers. Which means that we will need to upload these photos too.
The reason why we sync all of the project instead of selected changes is because it takes less load from our servers - and we may plan to change that in the future for further optimization.
I would personally like to lock down the entire tree except, say the spouses ancestors. People could make a mess out of a tree in a hurry if not. ie, access to just their particular branch.
Also, I'd like to be able to lock down Photo Albums from editing & tagging. I have one Album that called navigation by coat of arms, it's a quick way to get to where I want to go. I have a Historic Events Album, and ancestors linked to it that were there, I don't want general access to that either.
In simple terms I'd like to allow family members access, but I don't want them screwing up the tree.
Note: Sorry for copying this question from FAQ category, but I receive no info from My Herritage team yet, so maybe the question is more related to Family Tree Builder topic, who knows :)
Hi all, I read several FAQ topics about issues with potentially lost data since upgrade to version 7 reported by particular users. I belive they can be solved or they affected only limited group of users but, on the other hand, I believe that lot of users, including me, have too may records in their family trees to be able check all the records one by one after the upgrade if any data issue appeared there. I have already upgraded to version 7, backuped tree data before this upgrade. From my point of view, I have no sync issues and - at least major - data seems to be present on both sides in my FTB application and online. I have already started to made new data updates there and, as the amount of these updates is growing, I would like to be sure that I don't have to be afraid about any lost or wrong data hidden somewhere inside in comparsion with my tree data stored in version 6.
That is why I would like to ask My Herritage if they can confirm us, if there are (or not) any data types or other issue related to upgrade to version 7, which we should check to be sure before we continue with major updates of our family trees. Please, don\t consider it offensive, I would like to ensure that we don't have to wait for any major fix. I belive I am not only one who don't want to lost any information which we built for years :)
Thank you for writing and we appreciate your patience regarding this matter.
There has been reports for various of bugs in our new release of family tree builder 7. These reports usually talk about loss of information.
1) Loss of information of individuals -
This is a bug that we are working on very hard to solve, we are trying to collect as much as information as possible. It usually consists of all the names in the tree to become "UNKNOWN".
There's a similar issue that is very easy to fix which is related to the data languages (due to the fact that some of our members work on multi languages trees) but the issue we are talking about is caused due to the upgrade from version 6 to 7. Luckily, when you upgrade our software makes an automatic backup of the family tree. Which means that you will always be able to restore the tree that you had previously on FTB 6.
We are investigating this issue and we are highly recommending our members to backup their trees regularly by going to File > Backup Project...
2) Notes are lost -
What happens in the family tree builder 7 is that we have fixed a bug that occurred on family tree builder 6. This bug fix takes all the first notes that you have written in FTB 6 and converts them to a fact description instead.
The manual fix would be to go to the fact, click on edit fact and then to manually copy and paste it as a new note.
3) Photos are lost -
If photos are lost in the family tree builder this is most likely an issue that is related to the projects directory moving or bad call to our server thus not being able to find the pictures.
Long story short the solution would be to try and restore the photos from the family site by going to Photos > Photos (from the toolbar) > Choose "Restore photos from family site"
4) Smart Matches or record matches are lost -
With the upgrade of ftb 7 some people decided to accidentally sync their trees as new ones (neverminding the fact that it might duplicate the trees on your family site but also) which causes it to be treated as a whole new tree (with no past confirms or rejects).
Since it is synced as a new tree it might also take some time until the smart matches will appear again.
I hope that sums up all the problems that a member might have in our family tree builder 7 upgrade. We are working on all of them and some of them are actually bug fixes that are designed to make it better for our members (such as the fact notes).
But its safe to say that you can always restore your project from the last backup.
And like I said before - you can manually backup your family tree at any point by going to File > Backup Project..
This loss of information happens for very specific group of individuals and it doesn't happen for a lot of our members. However the methods to counteract them are simple. I hope that it's enough to convince you to stay on family tree builder 7. We are constantly trying to stabilize it and fix bugs. We have started with build 099 and recently released build 7107 which you can download from our download page.
If you ever encounter a problem you can immediatley contact our support team who should be more than happy to help you and assist you in any way!
