Thank you for your reply. My problem is with step one.
If I go to ‘Export GEDCOM’ and save a GEDCOM file (I am given no other option) when I open it in Excel everything is in the first column, not in separate columns in the way that I have achieved in the past. Am I missing a trick somewhere?
I did not understand your step two.
Once I have the data into Excel step three is no problem.
If You are working with an online tree, You must import this exported GEDCOM File from Your MH familysite into FTB as a new project (don't forget to disable automatic sync, if You are working with a online tree). From this point, You are working with the FTB on Your local PC.
Next steps are the same, if You are working with the FTB and publish Your familytree to Your familysite, too.
On the menu ->edit->export to Excel select the lists You want. For a short overview, I always take the 2 lists:
- export list of people
- export list of families
For the long list I'm using:
- export custom report
With the custom report You can select all fields You want (described in the GEDCOM file standard definitions)
Every list exported from this FTB menu, creates a CSV file. This CSV file is a 'simple' textfile and means a Comma Separated Value file. Excel can open this file type, but - as You have seen - every line is in column 1.
The trick is: create an Excel Workbook/sheet and import this CSV file into Excel using the data import tool of Excel. With Excel 2007, You find this under Data and the Get External Data .. From Text. After You select the CSV file You can see the Text Import Wizzard. Select the Delimited option and eventually the file origin type (because of the accented/special characters). On the next window select the delimiterComma and deselect Tab. Now You click Finish. Click OK on the next small window and You can see an Excel sheet with the separated infos in separated columns.
Now You can do some cosmetics, like 'Filter' and eventually miss interpreted new lines.
This things about Excel export from FTB just creates tables.
You can use Excel to create charts (i.e. pedigree charts), but then You dive into the nice world of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and do a little bit programming. Your tables You created before are Your data source (every person or family has one row). If Your hobby is programming, this is an interesting thing to do.
But if Your hobby is family research, then it's better You take a look, what other applications can do for You. FTB has a lot of chart templates, MyHeritage online, too. Or other software from other companies.
Thank you to MH for improving the function to serach FTB, when adding a new person, if that person allready exists in FTB. As I am in the situation that I can NOT merge GEDCOM files into FTB I have to manually add EVERY person to FTB. It looks to me as this, "compare persons" function works MUCH better in 7.0. Instead of adding duplicats I have been able to "connect" a person to an allready existing family.
We are glad that you have found some useful functions in our Family Tree Builder 7.0.
Thank you for writing them on our forums - we appreciate your thanks and we will forward it to our developers to smile as-well and to hear of their achievements. It's not everyday that you hear a customer thank you for the functionality of your product.
I posted the following in the FAQ forum by mistake last night...
For the first time last night FTB failed to start in Windows 7 (64bit). When I try and launch the program the HD flashes as usual but nothing appears on the screen. Looking in Task Manager it shows the MyHeritage.exe is running. It remains there until I manually end the process.
I tried upgrading to v7 via the download link on the MyHeritage website. I was previously using v6. Ah hah, success! It started up. I then rebooted my PC and am back to square one. I have even tried uninstalling the application, rebooting then resintalling straight to v7 and still with no luck.
Even with a synced tree, now with Family Tree Builder 7.0, the tree that you synced from Family Tree Builder to your site can be edited online. You can choose to edit the tree online by yourself, or with your site managers, and site members. By default, trees that were synced from Family Tree Builder to a family site can be edited online by the original site creator only, and it will remain read-only for other site members.
If you would like to have a family treethat all of your site managers, or that all of your site memberscan edit online, please do the following: Go To Family Tree > Manage Trees > Edit tree settings:
Thank you. IT seemed strange to me that after working with my site members for two years, all of a sudden when I started to use FTB7 and synced the first time, they couldn't update the tree. I can't see the logic behind this, except for the possible problem of having two different versions that would be difficult to sync . (This would be the case if the site mgr made updates on his PC while the members made updates on the website).
Well, I just uninstalled the FTB. I hope that won't affect any future actions I perform on the main webstie tree.
I know, the documentation gen of software developers is very small
But, publishing a change log of a software program - in this case FTB - could be really very helpful. As I'm reading the posts about FTB 7, there are a lot of problems and most of the users are very worried.
So, place a little change log on the FTB page, and/or a litte readme file with the software package, please. So everybody can see, what's new (new features, corrections, etc.) with a build of Your FTB.
However, as Remo mentioned we currently do not have a full detailed change log and it is clearly missing for some people. We are sorry, and we might consider adding one to our next versions (most probably v8.0 as we need to take time to adjust the proper documentation for such a thing).
