I've downloaded the Mac version and installed it in Applications. When I click to open it from there, the FTB icon appears briefly in the dock, then disappars from the dock and from the Applicaitons folder. Not even an error message or report form.
I started entering my family tree online first rather than family treebuilder and uploading it to the web on My Heritage website. Can I download what I haver entered online and import it into the family treebuilder I have just downloaded?
Hi. I am finding many many relatives in West Virginia that are 1st cousins and they are married. Sometimes it is crazy trying to figure out exactly how they are related. Is there an easy was in the program to figure it out for me?
Thank you! For the most part it worked. When i put the name of one of the spouses, knowing 100% they are cousins, the program would just tell me that person is the spouse of so & so! Yet I know for sure their Grandfather's are brothers. I will keep working on it tho. These two threw me a curve ball because i have come across at least a dozen married 1st cousins and they were easy to figure out.
I just tested it again. In the upper left-hand corner it should tell you that there is an additional relationship and that they are first cousins. Make sure that you have them in your tree as having the same grandparents.
Glad to have been of help. In the Classic view these relationships were displayed visually. In fact, if you use FTB and you visit your on-line site from it, you can still access the Classic view. At least I still can. I will never understand why MH discontinued the Classic view. In my opinion it was one of their greatest assets and one of the main reasons I chose MH in the first place. I hope they make good on their promise to at some point resurrect it. It cannot be too soon for me!
I have been using the program almost seamlessly until now, but I seem to have run into a problem.
I have four generations I'm working on. They are all directly related to me, far, far back. What happens is I'm trying to link two existing persons together as married, and then link an existing person as their child. It's linking them like I ask, but I keep ending up with the mother being "related through 40 steps" instead of "directly related" like she should be. Somehow it ends up being "wife of, and then father of, mother of, etc."
Gudrød is a direct ancestor x37
his son Olaf is a direct ancestor x39
but Gudrød's wife and Olaf's mother Alfhild, is marked as "related to me through 38 steps", where she is listed as Gudrøds wife, but not Olaf's mother! (I think that's the problem.)
I've tried to detatch and reattach several times and different ways, but it keeps happening... Alfhild's father (Alfarinn) is also listed as related to me through 39 steps, (where it should be directly related, and not through Alfhild's marriage, sinc he's Olaf's grandfather) while his father, Gandalf, is directly related x40, because one of his other children (Álfhildr) is also a direct ancestor to me..
Any clues as to what I can do to fix this? As long as I keep Alfhild and Gudrød separate, and only has Alfhild as Olaf's parent, it works like it should, but adding one more parent removes Alfhild as the mother and only puts her as Gudrød's wife. She still appears in the family tree as Olaf's mother, but not in the "relation to me"-tool...
This is a very old problem that has gotten worse. It seems that MH can only handle one line of descent at the time and will use what it considers the shortest &/ or most direct one. I have complained about it several times since I joined more than eight years ago. Recently they also dropped the relationship calculation on-line, although it still works, more or less, on FTB.
I have accidentally deleted a wife and all of the decendants from a spouse. Several generations, gone! They can still be seen on Myheritage website as i haven't synced since i did it. How do i get them back? Please help!!!
One option could be that (before you sync it) you can reload your tree data backup which is usually automatically created by the system i some period and stored in the folder where you have store yout ree data. t depends on the fact how did you set the program and how old is the last stored backupin your Family Tree application - but it should help you, maybe you can lost some last updates yuo made, but this could be much easier for you to set back some last updates you made. Good luck.
Is it possible to somehow add old house number which is not already in the map? I don't want to use whone name of city, today's street and number. I would like to use just "City, no. 5". But with this, FTB is not able to locate it in the map.
Also thre is a problem with suggestions. If I put a city name, it sometimes suggest two same alternatives in case this city is twice in one country. It would be better with some other attribute.
to make it simpler for the MH mapping system I put only the main details in the 'place' box.
for example, for a death; Bendigo, Victoria, Australia (Always use the State and Country).
And that gets a white check-mark in a green circle, the system has recognised the address.
And then in the Description box I put, in this case, Bendigo Hospital; that doesn't affect the MH place recording.
BTW if you (double?) click in the little box at the end of the place box (where that check mark can appear) it brings up a menu where you can make selections.
Also if there two places in the one state with the same name ('state' will perhaps differentiate between most places of the same name) you could put something in the description box such as 'near...' (the nearest notable town).
I have downloaded Family Tree Builder but cannot get the software to install. I have a PC and haven't had this problem with other software that I've downloaded. Please help because I'm getting VERY frustrated!
The priority is the website tree. The reason is very simple: if you have family members working on the family tree, they are only able to edit the tree online. If Family Tree Builder (FTB) would be considered the priority on the syncing, it would always override the changes and additions that the site members added to the family tree online.
