No, I'm not able to use the program without problems. The program still crashes after a few minutes. And I have not received an e-mail telling me, that my site is alive again. Just as I was not informed in advance of the maintenance, which seems to have caused the software problems.
I have un- and reinstalled the software with no luck.
I've forwarded you copies of the emails that were sent to you throughout the maintenance period.
If you didn't receive these mails it makes me wonder if you receive other types of emails from MyHeritage such as calendar alerts and notification emails? It can help to configure the settings in your email account to accept emails from MyHeritage. Keep me posted on this.
Unfortunately, we did not anticipate the necessity for a maintenance period at all and so did not inform anyone that there would be such a thing. I hope you will understand. After four years of consistent service this is the first time such a long maintenance has ever occurred.
All in all the maintenance is intended to help family sites run faster and more smoothly. Everyone will benefit from this period.
If you check your Site Account I believe you will be happily surprised as well.
Thank you for forwarding the e-mails to me. No I've not received them earlier, and they are not in my unk-emailbox eighter. But I do receive weekly news letters!
I understand, that the maintenance was not planned to last so long, and I am VERY thankful for the one year extra subscription compensation. That is a VERY nice thing to do for us! Thank you.
Still I have some problems and some questions:
- You wrote, that when entering my site account I would be happily surprised. It seems, that nothing is new at my site account........ What did you refer to?
- When I enter the family sites account preferences, it is stated, that my subscription ends February 13, 2010. This will be updatesd to 2011, right?
- After I made a new project out of my old one, the software doesn't crash, UNLESS I activate the Smart Research. Then it crashes after having researched about 200 persons. And after it crashes, the first app. 200 persons researched are not saved. How do I solve this problem, so that I can have a full research of my family tree?
- This morning I activated the SmartMatch function, but I still can't see any smartmatches. I have about 950 persons in my tree. When will I receive Smartmatches?
- After the maintenance has ended, it takes a lot longer to upload my family tree to the site. Is it supposed to take longer now?
- In the bottom of the family site's front page it is stated, that the latest update of my site was at "May 07 2009 07:02", but I updated the site this afternoon more than once. Can I expect the site to be properly updated?
Yepiie - I found a solution myselv, and it seems to work!:
I saved my family project as a GEDCOM file. Then I imported that GEDCOM file to a new family project. Tests showed, that the new peoject sisn't crash the software! Therefore I deleted the old family tree at my site and uploaded the new project to the site instead!
Next time you plan to have a maintenance, it would be very handy, if you let us all know in advance. Also it would be nice, if someone would reply to the e-mails and messages we send directly to you support people.
I trust, that you will extend my membership with one week, as I've been not able to work with my project the last week?
I don't know if its related but I cannot access my site at all, whenever I enter my credentials I get the down for maintenance message. I had a response from the support team saying that there were hunders of trees down with this problem and that they were working on it. They said a couple of days but that was a couple of days ago.
Can you let me know if you get any joy with your problem, good luck
Thanks for coming back to me. I had an email from the site today saying they were working on the problem 24hrs a day and expect to have it sorted in a day or two. I'm more than concerned at this stage as I've heard that from them before.
I've started building it again but to be honest my heart is not in it as I wont have ll the photos and letters that my family have posted. There were 355 names on my site and 53 of them were active in posting lots of stories and stuff.
Good luck withyour site and I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us.
I am happy and releived to report that all has been resolved successfully and Daniel has been brilliant at keeping me posted. I know its been a difficult time for you guys and having read the blog regarding the work on the servers I can understand this was major piece of work.
Thanks for checking on me and please pass on my regards to Daniel.
I noticed that the Family Tree Builder software will not run when your website down for weekly maintenance. It just happened to me a few hours ago. I thought my program crashed . I even tried to reinstall but same problem. Fortunately all my data are still on my HDD and I can run the s/w with all files intact when your website is up and runing again . Is there a way for the s/w to operate without being connected to your website ? Thanks
MyHeritage can send Newsletters to family members but not to pre-schedule downtime?
Anyway, here is a trick to run FTB when the MyHeritage site is down: Temporaily disable your network connection to the Internet. If you have a cable/dsl modem it is simple as toggling the offline button on the modem or unplugging the network cable to break your connection. Then start FTB and wait. It will eventually time out after a couple minutes when it gives up on contacting the MyHeritage server. Click through any error messages if you see them. Then FTB will load your family tree so you can edit it offline. Oh, don't forget to re-enable your connection when you are done!
Also, periodically export your tree to a gedcom file. That way if MyHeritage happens to never come back online, at least you have your family data. Then you can upload or import it into another program or genealogy website. I actually did that at a competitor website family tree service just in case, because I got very frustrated MyHeritage was down almost 2 days. I think this forum should be on another server or host so we can login to something to get site status updates from the support team.
Thanks for offering the great advice. I think you may have helped another member I saw writing on the forum who had exported a gedcom file to resolve her problem. :)
The problems you encountered in Family Tree Builder were indeed connected to the maintenance period and affected only the small number of sites that were in maintenance for a prolonged duration.
Any communication between Family Tree Builder and your family site during that time caused FTB to have errors. For example, if you use automatic publishing to automatically backup your family tree to your family site, then the program would try to connect to the internet and communicate with your family site the moment you opened the program. In some cases this caused FTB to crash.
Now that your site is live, you should no longer experience problems. Please be in touch with us if you do have trouble of any kind.
The maintenance period was so short for most of the millions of sites at MyHeritage that it was unfelt by users. This is how we planned it and therefore did not notify our members. Unfortunately, you and a couple hundred other users got the lucky end of the deal and ended up in a longer period of maintenance than we anticipated. Apologies.
Your data and family site should be just fine. I'd appreciate if you'd let me know this is the case.
About five or six members have had some minor problems such as photos being attached to the wrong person, but the team is working on these sites as soon as they come in and most of those issues have already been resolved.
For you to know, there is a back up feature in the File menu in FTB that will allow you to easily backup your family tree locally on your computer. If you work in FTB then your family tree file is always saved on your computer. This means that even if something were to happen to your family site you would still have the full file including photos on your computer.
A gedcom file has its advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage is, like you mentioned, that you can import it into other genealogy programs. The disadvantage is that gedcom files typically do not include photos.
If you have photos in the tree the best option is to use the File > Backup project feature in FTB. You can always export a gedcom from this file at a later date.
I got back in after a few hours . However I have not used the software for a week so I don't know when the maintenance actually started. Maybe they should add a statement to the effect that the Family Tree builder software will not work while maintenace is being carried out .right on the first page of their Forums.
