it's indeed sad that this combining feature is not available. However, I tried to outsmart it (but it didn't work, why?) by publishing both big family trees I have on the my heritage site. I hoped that than by means of smart-matches I could combine them both.
But in the smart matches my own second family tree doesn't show up. Why is that?
The merge feature is definitely needed. For example in my family 2 siblings married other 2 siblings (a wife's sister married the husband's brother): and there is no way I can enter this correctly, I have to let go of one of the sibling links, because it wont let me merge, or create the link of being siblings or creat the link of marriage after the person data was entered.
Sebastian, the merge feature would solve this problem too.
I want to make sure I am clear on this. I just uploaded my gedcom from ancestry and have lost people(sort of). They have become disconnected from some branches but remain there on others. Ex: Mary M is in the tree still with her parents, spouse, children but was removed as the mother of her illigitimate son prior to her marriage. I also have sisters who married brothers of their stepfather's family...confusing enough for me to keep straight but now this program disconnected them from part of the tree. HOW DO I FIX THIS?? I have a ton of this type of thing w/census records attached to all of these people. I CAN NOT go through manually. If there is not a solution for merging or re-connecting I will have to look for another program. I was looking for an alternative to ancestry with a more searchable and comprehensive data structure. I uploaded gedcom for a free tree so I could decide if this is the better program before upgrading to pay for the service. I currently pay $30/mnth, ancestry has been great for gathering the info but has NO options for seeing all of that data other than by individual or pedigree. That just does not cut it at this point in my research I need to be able to see people by region lived, originated from, place buried....please let me know if your program is capable of this and the merge before I delete my other tree and invest time and $ in this one.
Thank you for writing to us, and I am sorry that you are experiencing difficulties with this issue.
Your problem with broken and incorrect relationships that cannot be fixed in an online tree, is one that we are well aware of, and we are working on fixing. I really do apologize for the delay, but I have a workaround for you in the meantime.
I suggest that you export your tree to Family Tree Builder (the software on your computer), and then you can correct the tree there, and then re-export in back to your family site.
You should completely remove those people that there is a problem with, and then re-add them to your tree.
In Family Tree Builder, it is possible to detach existing relationships and attach new ones.
It is also possible to attach a person in your tree to another person or family, that already exist in the tree.
For example - If you have put a child under the wrong parents, you can right click on the child’s box,
go to Parents > Manage parents, detach the wrong parents and attach to the correct parents in your tree.
In this way, you can display a marriage between two family members who are already in the tree, an adoption of a child, etc.
To export your tree to Family Tree Builder, first open a browser and log into your Family Site on MyHeritage.com, then go to the Family Tree tab > Manage Trees in your Family Site.
Click the ‘export GEDCOM’ link on top of your list of family trees. This will save your family treeto your computer as a file with a .ged extension.
Once you have the file downloaded, and you have properly re-installed Family Tree Builder, you can double click on the GEDCOM file that you exported and it should open up automatically in Family Tree Builder. This should restore your entire project, except for the photos.
To export the gedcom file back to your computer, click on File > Export Gedcom. You can then re-import the Gedcom file into your family site under Family Tree > Manage Trees,Import Gedcom.
Please let me know if you need any more help with this process.
My message is to Esther. I have tried the regular support channels, but that does not seem to reach anyone.
Does it not concern you that your product is still unable to merge duplicate entries, despite the fact that a lot of users have been clamouring for this feature for years? Any free geni.com user is able to merge duplicate individuals online with a simple drag and drop. And you own that technology, yet we at MyHeritage have to be satisfied with .... waiting. I can not believe that we're still waiting for this. C'mon and sort it out already!
Ok, I am willing to go through that IF you can answer the rest of the ? Your program has the ability to pull regional data for the map/report functions. Can I input a city or county or state and retrieve people with that area entered, then can I sort that data down by last res. or death or marriage or birth etc. Like an Excel formula..enter certain perameters and sort the data. I am Not a computer person so I am prob not using correct terms. Hope you understand. Example: I am visiting cemeteries in Monona cnty and would like a list of all individuals that have that cnty attached by census or entered mannually by me for any reason. Ok, get that list and lot of them moved somewhere else later in life. So, need to sort the first list generated by last res listed Monona cnty. Same going to courthouses, historical soc. etc. for obits, marriage records, births...I need to find a program that can do this and also allow our families to view and contribute photos/stories online.
I have a person (A) that is married, but beside him it also shows a 'unknown' person. The unknown person and A have children. 'A' also has a spouse, and when I click on his spouse, it shows the same children (tough to explain!).
How do I get rid of the Unknown entry? The delete feature is not there.
I've added a file to show what I'm trying to explain.
I am very frustrated that the bug in the Book Report has not been fixed.
I identified this bug over one year ago and no one has corrected the problem.
You have updated this program at least twice since my repot and the bug remains the same.
Unfortunately your well designed interface suffers a major barrier for any serious researcher due to the fact that it inverts the month and date for any day prior to the 13th. (Example) My grand daughter's birthday is August 10, 2002 and the Book Report prints October 8, 2002. Her birthday is correct in all of the other reports except the Book Report so it is obviously a glitch in the program generating the report.
Please adress the issue and notify me if you should ever decide to correct the problem.
Sorry, but the message comes up totally blocking the screen (like the Vista UAC-screen fader) and the only thing I can do is to press Yes or No. Tried to take a screenshot, but it's not recordet to clipboard at all. Seems like the UAC-thing is blocking the clipboard or something.
I'm running F-Secure Client Security, but it's being centrally controlled, so I can not do anything about that. (work computer..)
Both myheritage.com and .no are trusted sites, but still the UAC kicks in.
It is FTPCheckUpdates.exe thats causing the trouble. I've tried running it directly, and the UAC kicks in again. Tried running it as Administrator, and the UAC still kicks in.
So there is probably some registry-edits or something in this process?
I've enclosed the log from ProcessMonitor (http://live.sysinternals.com/procmon.exe) for you to look at, if it helps at all. I can see a lot of registry-edits, but I'm not sure what makes this a problem yet.
I can of course just disable FTPCheckUpdates.exe from the startup run-cycle, but I like to be updated. But I guess I could just do it manually within FTB.
I have the same problem on Vista 64bit. I don't like the idea of having to click that box every time I start the computer. I'd much rather just click check updates in the Myheritage program itself from time to time.
I took a pic of the screen with the details showing... not that it tells you much more than the other guy said.
I'm not too keen on MyHeritage automatically changing my Firefox settings... I don't want it as my homepage, I don't want it as my default search and I want to choose whether it puts a new toolbar in place or not... it shouldn't be automatic, it should be tix this box if you want this feature, in my opinion.
Please send the screen shot you took to support(at)myheritage(dot)com, and we will investigate the problem.
Next time you install Family Tree Builder, choose the custom install, and choose not to install the toolbar and set the homepage. If you need any help in restoring your settings let me know in the email to support.
I've recently updated FTB to the newest version. After this, when I try to create a book report, the progress of creating the report stops when abt. 90-99% finished, and never finishes. I do not receive any error messages.
Today I've also upgraded the Complete Genealogy Reporter to the payable version, because I thought, that this might solve the problem, but unfortunately I still have the same problem.
Family Tree Builder will still be running its own built in free version of The Complete Genealogy Reporter. The paid version you have bought has to be run separately. Export a GEDCOM file from FTB and load it in to TCGR. If it still doesn't work you may need to contact TCGR support.
