Can I save a project on a CD to give to family members? Can they view the project on their pc or do they have to download the FTB to view it? I have added notes and photos and I want those included in what I give to family members. Would they be able to see my notes, etc? I thought of including folders from my My Heritage folder for each tree.
When I upload a photo to my Family Tree Builder, it shows up multiple times in the Photos folder in My Heritage folder in Windows Explorer. Why is this?
I scan documents, such as death certificates and put them in the Research folder. When I upload them as a photo in Family Tree Builder they also show up muliple times in the Photos folder. Is there any way to delete these extra photos without deleting them from Family Tree Builder?
I thought that when I uploaded a photo to Family Tree Builder it was in the app just as all the other info is there. But if I delete a photo from the folder, it's deleted from FTB. It might say it's still there, but it isn't, just an icon is there.
Thanks for contacting us on our forum and I'll be happy to explain.
Family Tree Builder makes several small copies of the photos you enter in the tree if you are looking in the Myheritage folder. These duplicates are internal to our programing and are used to allow the tree to load a lot more smooth and quick when it comes to viewing your photos and applying it to the various functions.
If you delete the duplicate photos you will lose personal photos in your tree so we don't reccomend that you remove them.
Microsoft will soon be releasing the new windows 10 operating system. What is Myheritage doing to make sure that there are no interaction issues when 10 is released. Myheritage has enough issues that we all have already and you certainly don't need more issues for all your faithfull subscribers. I have also seen that Myheritage will be possibly releasing a new version of FTB soon. Will it also be tested to work with windows 10?
I will not remove the posts, what you raise is a valid point.
And I will answer your issues in private, so we can try to solve this issue together. However for other users that might be reading this. The current version of the FTB, does not support sync from multiple computers.
We are of course aware of this and that it is a weakness, we are also working on the new FTB v.8.0 where we hope (I am not the programmer for this) that sync from multiple points will be available.
What Jonas said was " ..... we are working on a new version of the FTB, v.8.0. We will not be coming with a fix to this in the current build, its simply not an easy fix but will need to redo the architectural structure of how FTB is programmed. The v.7.0 (current one) is basically the same infrastructure as the first version of FTB, and is not optimal.
So before FTB v.8.0 is released, I am afraid there is no fix for multiple computers, and I strongly suggest you only use one. "
Also "...We will not be coming with a fix to this in the current build..." answers many of the bugfix requests that have been asked for lately
This begs the question 'WHEN WILL ftb V8.0 BE RELEASED?'
3. FTB Sync is destroying assignment data and after Sync the photo is not available for persons assigned on step 2.
Note for the users: be not suprised about his bug, limit your efforts for assignemtn persons to photos, be patient while awaiting bugfix.
Note for MH Support Team: it looks that my post about FTB Sync bug, while FTB Sync is destroyng data (is deleting email address) was removed from the forum. I am dissapointed of not receiving the bugfix, I agree my post to be removed only in the situation the bugfix for the users is provided.
I apologize that the bug you reported is still unresolved.
We are aware of the issue and doing our best to resolve it as soon as we can. Your feedback is very important to us and we address every request that we receive.
You should remember that our software handles very complex databases and records and provides many genealogy tools. Every service and feature that is released goes through months of testing.
Bugs and feature requests are prioritized according to how many users write to support about them and how much resources and time they require of the development team. Some bugs that seem minor may actually be related to the infrastructure and require major changes that effect many other features.
We do our best to fix and implement the issues you report with the resources available to us. As much as we would like to, we can't fix every bug and feature that is requested.
We are aware that as a customer you look for the best tools to aid you in your work.
I hope you will understand as we work to resolve the issue you reported.
Thank you for your patience and understanding regarding this matter.
This is the standard reply from MH about the sync tool.
"We are aware of the bugs"
"We are doing our best to fix them"
"The software handles complex databases"
The fact is that sync has been destroying peoples family tree research for more that 12 months now and MH has been unable to fix the problems.
And, now when you use FTB sync in Windows 8.1 a sync process is launched. This process stays open even after you close FTB and can continue to make changes to your online site.
I had a small difference in the name of the site saved in FTB and the name of the site online. I hadn't openned FTB on a given day, but notice that the site name had changed (to the name used in the FTB version) and the front page reported that I had loaded a new version of the site. I change the name back in the online site but did not open FTB or use it. The next day I notice the same thing, the site name had been updated and the front page reported a "new" version published. So I went looking to see why and there in Windows 8 is the update process running - even though FTB had been closed two days earlier.
My opinion is that sync can't be trusted. If you use sync you have no idea what it changed and whether those changes are correct or appropriate - or older information written over new information. There is no log of the changes - either in FTB or online - so there is no way to know what was changed. Once your site reaches a few thousand people in size it is impossilbe to check all the records to see where mistakes have been introduced and changes made, and it will only be weeks later that you will realise something you added is now missing and an older version has replaced it. This has happened to me several times. I have made a change for example in a biography online and found that it is later replaced with an older version. Often the only time you realise that sync has caused a problem is when the number of people in the online site and the number in FTB don't match.
I twice had my photo albums completely destroyed by sync and once had to restart and rebuild the online site. I no longer use sync and no longer open FTB when I am on the Internet. I have simply lost faith in the software.
"Bugs and features requests are prioritized according to how many users write to support about them" This policy should be reviewed. It is awful for MH to say we know there is a bug but not enough people are complaining so we aren't going to prioitise it. Our users will just have to put up with the bug until enough people complain.
MH know sync isn't working (and people have been complaining for a long time). They know it is corrupting peoples trees and damaging their research. They have known this for at least 12 months. So, how many people have to complain before this bug is prioritised and fixed? One has to start to wonder about the care factor here.
..."As much as we would like to, we can't fix every bug".
Honestly MH, if you can't fix sync you should disable it. You should at least turn it off by default and require people to activate it before using it - and you should first warning them that it may damage their online site, corrupt their photo albums, fail to sync all profiles, and over-write online data with older FTB data. Turning it off and warning users would be the proper thing to do. Especially when you are very aware of the problems it is causing.
The following are all topics on these forums and I suspect they are just a small fraction of the total complaints you receive. What is the required number for complaints before the problem is fix? How many complaints will it take to get sync fixed?
Repository Notes cause Sync Failure
Sync stopped working
Syncing has gone terribly awry
All photos in FTB fail to load
Synchronization problem! Software doesn't synchronize some of the profiles.
In Family Tree Builder, it is possible to choose a DISPLAY language and a DATA ENTRY language.
DISPLAY language corresponds to all the buttons and command names in the program. DISPLAY language changes Family Tree Builder’s interface only and will not affect any information that you have manually entered in the tree.
DATA ENTRY language corresponds to the information you enter into the tree yourself. Names, places, notes, etc. are considered DATA.
Family Tree Builder allows you to enter Data in 'Primary' and 'Secondary' Data language
The problem you describe occurs when you enter Data in two different languages into the Family Tree Builder program and then synchronize it to your online family site. Within Family Tree Builder you can see two Data languages when you open a persons detail card. In some cases you might enter data in one language and leave the other language empty.
Now, when you synchronize your tree to your online family site, the tree view can display only one language at once. This means that for all data that was entered in a second language, it will display UNKNOWN in the family tree and in SmartMatches.
In order to resolve this issue, please follow these steps:
1. Open Family Tree Builder on your PC and open your project.
2. Open the Tools window by going to Tools menu > Languages in the upper toolbar.
3. In the window that appears, make sure that the check-box "Same as Display Language" is checked. This will make sure that the display language is the same as the (first) data language.
4. Now please do a right click somewhere in that window. A small menu appears, click on the item in it "Manage Data Languages"
5. You will notice that you have different amounts of items in the listed languages. You have to make them equal.
6. Select the first language in the list and click on the button 'Copy'.
7. In the new window you select the 'Copy To' to the other language and click on the button 'Copy'.
8. When the copy is done, select the second language in the list and click again on the button 'Copy'.
9. In the next window you select the 'Copy To' to the other language and click on the button 'Copy'.
With the above steps you make sure, that in both languages in your project you have all available data.
I hope that this will resolve your issue. Please inform me of your progress following the above steps and of course, do not hesitate to contact me again should you need any further assistance.
The system cannot be told to exclude specific cases. However, the settings in the system can by changed.
If you would like to take off a certain check from the system like the 'Siblings with same first name (#13)', simply open he FTB software, click on the 'Tools' tab in he upper toolbar and choose the 'Tree Consistency checker' option.
In the new window click on the 'Configure' option and un- mark the check that you wish to remove.
I have a similar circumastance, but in this case I have families where children die soon after birth and each is given the same family name(s); so I would like the checker to ignore same sibling names where the no overlap in dates of birth AND death.
