We're working on making allowances for the large number of name exceptions in different languages around the world.
And we actually did have a function in the past that looked for "de" "de la" "van" and other surname prefixes but because of the complexities of naming (some people include the "de" as part of the surname, some people don't) we decided to take the simple approach.
We will improve handling of surnames in the future.
Is it possible to create a "All-in-one" chart with just names, birth/death dates but with smaller boxes for each person?
It seems regardless of what facts / details are selected to display, the box for each person is HUGE and mostly full emptiness (ie, a couple of lines at the top - name etc and then empty space for most of the box). It would be much better if the box size could either be altered - or automatically adjusted to surround the information / facts showing.
I'm hoping this is possible already and I have just missed the option...??
Although at this point in time there isn't an official way to make the boxes in the chart smaller, I suggest that you do the following:
You can choose to include less information in the boxes, as you said that you are already doing, and you can also choose to make the photo smaller in the box. In an online all in one chart you can do this by going into Content to Include > Photo Size. In Family Tree Builder, this is under Options > Personal Photo Size.
I was working on my family tree and I came upon a problem.
My sister had a child before she was married for whom we have no information on his father and when he was 4, she married and had 2 other children. I entered the children and then said she was divorced and put her ex-husbands name into the system and then it gave the same father to all three children. The only way to disconnect him from the one child is to delete the entry, which then deletes him from the other two children.
How do I have him for the two children and not for the one who is not her ex-husbands child.
You must add an unknown husband to your sister (right mouse click "add spouse")then change the parents of the children unknown father (right mouse click on the children select "replace parents" then scroll down to the last couple).
In my pictures, I would like to tag/associate names for people not in my family tree, like friends or neighbours, celebrities etc. It is possible to tag them in Web interface, but not in FTB I guess. Is there any way ?
The answer below is correct, you have to have the person in your tree (can add as an unrelated person) before tagging that person in a photo). Tagging a person with free text as a solution for tagging non-relatives, is not a very good solution and we didn't add this, because that doesn't create an object for the name you've added, preventing re-use in the future. Also imaging you've tagged a person 10 times and then discover that he *is* a relative, if that was some foreign object you cannot then convert it into an individual in your tree. On the Website this is possible, but it creates a problem where the foreign tagged people are not part of the tree and cannot even be made a part of the tree. We are working on solution for that in the next version of the online tree.
You can keep building your tree in Family Tree Builder,
each time you make a change, you can publish the updated tree to your Family Site.
Your Site Members will be able to see the tree grow, but they will not be able to edit it.
If you want to remove the tree from the Family Site, go to the Family Tree > Manage Trees page, and remove it. I recommend that you leave it there - when you publish your tree it is shared with your family, and you will also get Smart Matches with other published trees.
I Have added nearly 150 pictures over the last three months. I was lucky enough to have pictures for most of my ancestors. Today when I went to work on the program, all pictures were gone. If you click on photos where the pictures were, there is a drawing of an old camera, in place of my picture. All the pictures were obtained from Picasa. I did note that if I click on Publish and go to my web site the pictures are still showing there. I tried backing up to an older version but still the pictures were gone. Does any one have any idea what could have happened? If I try to add pictures again and then publish, won't I have duplicate pictures on my web site?
I also don't want to publish current contact information for family members and am getting round this by entering the contact information in a Note for the person then checking the 'Private note (do not publish to site)' check box.
