I agree 100% with this. Especially in this day and age, families do not come in nice neat little packages. My sister and I, for example, are the producs of 2 seperate biological fathers but the same biological mother. It was my bio father, however, that raised us BOTH along with our bio mother. In other words, he adopted my sister. The only way that I am able to show this in my family tree is to say that both my father AND mother ADOPTED her -- when putting this information into the book or other features it is misleading because it appears to be saying that my sister is NOT a biological relative of our shared (bio) mother. In addition, when displaying my mother's decendant tree, it appears as though she has 3 children instead of 2 (and looks like I have 2 sisters instead of 1) because it displays my sister TWICE -- once with our mother's marriage to her first husband and once for her marriage to her second husband (my father, who adopted this child).
The same issue is occurring with my nephew, who's bio dad and adopted dad are different, and there are multiple other children from the union of HIS adopted father and bio mother (i.e. 1/2 siblings) (AND his full sister was never adopted by His adopted father) -- again it shows him on there twice so that it appears that my sister had 7 children instead of 6 -- it is showing as 2 from first husband and 5 completely seperate children from the second union --- it SHOULD show 2 from first, 1 of which is linked to second through paternal adoption, and 4 additional from second union. Yes, confusing but ACURATE!
I've added an adopted child but want to also add her biological mother, who has no relationship to her adopted father. The online tree is insisting her mother must be her adopted father's wife (he has a wife who isn't his adopted daughter's mother).
Can I do this?
In order to achieve both biological parents and adopting parents on the same tree you will need to follow the next instructions:
1) Make sure that both mother and father are marked as adopters
2) Add a new unrelated person
3) Connect the new person as a parent to the child
4) Add a spouse to the new person
The result would be both Birth and Adopting parents on the tree.
In the instructions I've mentioned that you need to mark the parents as adopting, you can do this by navigating to the full profile of the child, and then click on "edit profile", then click on "Family" and there you will have a choice of marking the parents as adopting.
I've also mentioned that you will need to connect a parent to the child, you can do this by following the next instructions:
I never like to complain before being thankful for what I have. So, first, I would like to express how grateful I am for this amazing software. It has been a huge help for me since I live so far away from my family. They were so impressed with the family tree I put together and it has become a way for me to stay updated on what's new with my family because I'll get emails that say "Haneen, update the family tree, so and so is married now." So, its been really great, thank you so much for making it available!
Now, on to my question. After updating information on my family tree, I always take about a half hour to put the final touches on the tree. The thing is, I like to keep all of the siblings together at the same level and their husbands/wives at a level below them and then their children at the next level down. Is there any way to make the software remember this format and repeat it everytime I create a Vertical Descendants Chart? The problem is that whenever I make even the tiniest change to the tree, the chart reformats itself and I have to go through and reformat it to look the way I would like it to look. There is a chance this is not possible and I completely understand that, but I thought I would ask.
I have exactly the same problem. When I have to make little changes to my tree, I prefer to directly edit the previously exported PDF (with Foxit PDF editor, for example) rather than spend half and hour rearranging the chart in FTB again.
It would be great to have an option to maintain (and save in the project) the position of all members and labels in the chart, and not to rearrange them each time a property is changed (style, paper size, etc.). I understand that this can lead to some problems, for example:
¿Where to automatically place new members? The would probably overlap easily with manually placed members. My suggested solution: new members would be placed near his ancestors, and be highlited to note that they should be manually placed. Once the member is manually placed, the hightlight would dissapear.
If the style is changed, the width and height of the boxes can change. If the boxes are bigger, they could overlap. My suggested solution: To store the positioning for each style. The user can manage a list of styles (add, edit, delete), each one with properties (style, page size, etc.) and manually places coordinates.
I understand this is a lot of work, but It would be awesome!
That sounds absolutely great! :) I completely understand, thank you for forwarding this suggestion over to the Development Team, I really do appreciate it and thank you for the amazingly quick reply!! :)
I have already sent an email to support re this topic, but thought it may be of interest to other users.
I have numerous family trees on the "go", and one of them has 2571 names in it. Today on loading it, FTB said there were duplicate entries which I OK'd to fix. However it appeared that EVERY entry was duplicated which gave a total of 5142 names. I only discovered this mass duplication when adding new entries, and the first of the new entries had an ID number of 5143. As I also keep a manual paper copy of each individual this is most annoying, as the template I use is created in Microsoft Excel. I don't want to have change the template from 2172 and so on (the first of the deleted duplicate entries) to 5143 and so on.
I would like to have those missing/deleted numbers back! Is this possible? Could an option to this problem be incorporated in the next fix/update of the program?
This problem may be in my other trees but I haven't checked as yet.
My earlier email to you explains why I need this fixed.
Ian: I have the same problem. I have now 4100 individuals in my data set, and if I try to use FTB version 4 it reports : "duplication of information was found, 1177 duplicate people." This happened when I first tried to use FTB version 4, so I removed it and went back to using version 3, which does not give me this problem. Even worse, if I run version 4 with my data, it doubles the number of individuals and makes all sorts of strange relationships...which are totally corrupt. When I tried to get support, the reply was to download the software and try again, so I did, last in Jan 2010. Got the identical problem. So I am only using version 3. I just tried reloading version 4 tonight, again got the same results. GED export works ok in GRAMPS on Linux, and Legacy on Windows.
At 12K miles apart, we are not both crazy: there is something rotten in version 4.
113 days is along time for support NOT to answer. I have a couple of work arounds, but still not ideal!
1. Do the fix, create gedcom file, import to another program (which I hardly ever use - Brothers Keeper) check that the ID #'s are correct then export as Gedcom, then import back to FTB. Not ideal as you have to give it a new name. But it works.
2. Do a backup before you exit the program. If you get duplicates again close and restore the backup.
This may get someone at My Heritage to wake up and check what is going on. It would be interesting to know if anyone else is having trouble.
I think my installation bombs out now because earlier I could not cancel the download during installation and I executed an "End Process" from Windows Task Manager. Possibly now the installer is in a corrupt situation. How can I clear it to re-install?
(I did an "End Process" because I realized the program was annoyingly installing in the root and I wanted to "fix" the install folder. This isn't a Windows 95 application is it? Why can't it go where it belongs?)
Also I'm already really becoming pessimistic that the software isn't going to be intrusive since the installation process has as a defaults a mechanism to change my home directory and to add a Explorer tool bar. Am I not installing spyware too am I?
Thanks. I already figured out a work-around. I ran a program called 'ccleaner' and then was able to install again. I gave up and decided to install in the C root directory even though I don't like the messiness of it.
