When I got to export only a branch of my tree, I still get the entire tree. I've followed the tutorial and still the same results, even varying the criteria (spouses, decendents, Ancesters, etc).
I made the fatal mistake of importing a GEDCOM without looking at it first - it was a huge file (> 10K records) and it was apparently corrupted as none of the parent/ spouse/ child relationships are available. So I have all of these records that I need to delete. In the tree view, with the list of people, it's easy to ID the orphaned records, but there doesn't seem to be a way of selecting and then deleting multiple records. I am willing to export to a different program with better DB handling abilities and then re-import.
I really don't want to start over as I have a very extensive tree that is viable.
For everyone's information - I loaded TMG - The Master Genealogist and it has some very good tools for identifying and merging people as well as managing the database at a higher level. I just exported to GED format did the maintenance I needed and then re-imported it. I've gone to TMG twice - I noticed the issue on cousins which I have lots of issues with and TMG made merging all these people much easier. There are tools to ID and then merge people and you can select at the GEDCOM element level which elements to include in the final record.
I am the webmaster of 2 sites. One I have no problem publishing. The other duplicates photos I've previously published. I would go to change the "publish settings" under "tools" to select "Selected Photos" or "No Photos" and when I click "OK" a balloon pops up next to "Use this Account" and says "site does not exist." I have no problem publishing to the website, other than the duplicate picture problem, or logging in on the actual myheritage website, but I can't change the "publishing settings. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks, I tried what you suggested and still does the same. The only thing that gets duplicated are the pictures associated with my brother, my fiance and myself. Nothing else gets duplicated.
I use the 3.0 on Vista nad somtime i just have to start the program and it freeze and says Windows is closing.....bla bla bla and I start it up again and the same thing happens over and over again and then it stops and I can start working again. I haven't been able to upload my tree since november!!!! it gets stuck at 35%, very anoying!!
I've re-installed the program, I cant upgrade it to3.2 because the program freezes and shutsdown.
Not a solution unfortunately. I am experiencing what sounds like the same problem on a Vista machine. Have installed 3.0 several times but every time I open it and start the Wizard it just falls over. I don't even get past that stage. I haven't been able to even upload my gedcom yet!
there was a problem with Family Tree Builder and the authorizations on Vista.
This problem is solved by installing Family Tree builder outside of the program files folder - our new version of Family Tree Builder will recognize you are using Vista, and will do so automatically.
Please uninstall the version you have on your computer (don't worry, you data will not be damaged) and install the new version from here:
Thanks for your solution to the problem. I must have intuitively known what to do because I did what you suggested anyway and uninstalled and reinstalled which resulted in Family Tree Builder being located outside of the program files folder and hence no problems since. So it has been full steam ahead from me since my original message.
I have been experiencing other difficulties but they are for another question when I have exhausted all avenues in the help files etc.
also no solution, just another crash....
I can work with FTB, as long as I do not try this IMPORT GED file.
I come to the point where I should pick a project name( the import option DOES NOT APPEAR)... the whole screen fades and a very small family tree window appears- can not read the text or re-size the window.
then Vista wants to send a report off somewhere and everything closes.
Funny thing is, if I close the active project BEFORE I import the GED file,it works!
I have been working with the Family Tree Builder gedcom export utility for several evenings this week, trying to build a file of all the people who were cousins and ancestors of my aunts and uncles, which would include the in-law's families. I have found that the order in which individuals are added to the selection list makes a big difference in the results, and the "Ancestor" selection will only work if done a specific way. I consider this to be a major BUG in the Gedcom export utility of FTB. The order of individual selection should make absolutely no difference in the resulting gedcom results. Each individual selection line should stand on it's own, with a logical OR between them.
Here's my findings:
When selecting ancestors descendants spouses of both husband and wife, only the first person in the list get ancestors selected. The second one in the list will not have any ancestors in the resulting gedcom file. To overcome this, the first person in the selection list (either husband or wife) should only have ancestors selected (no spouses), and the second one in the list should include all three criteria(Descendants, Ancestors, and Spouses). If the order is reversed where the first person in the list selects all three criteria, and the second in the list only selects ancestors, the ancestor selection for the second person does not work. Ancestor-only selection must be first in order to work.
Here's one of my test cases:
Gedcom 1. Husband's family only
- selected Descendants Ancestors Spouses = 548 people
Gedcom 2. Wife's family only
- selected Descendants Ancestors Spouses = 543 people
Gedcom 3. Husband's family Wife's family
- selected Descendants Ancestors Spouses of Husband
- selected Ancestors Spouses of Wife (wife only has two ancestors: Father & Mother)
- expected to get 550 people (548 of husband F-M of wife)
- actual result was 548 people. Father & Mother of wife were not selected
- tried reversing the selection order, putting the wife's selection first in the list, and the resulting gedcom did not include any ancestors of the husband.
- removed the "Spouse" selection from the wife, so only ancestors were selected for the wife (in the first position of the selection list), and the results are now the expected 550 people
Try adding more than one individual to your export list. I was having the same problem exporting more than one branch of my family. I was getting limited number of ancestors of my parents' in-laws. After mamy attempts I think I can accept the finished file.
I am talking about Notes tab in person's details in Family Tree Builder. I noticed that Notes get cleared if they are bigger that just a few words... Same is true for the Description field on the Facts tab. This is VERY annoying... Is there a workaround? Thanks.
I had the same challenge of wanting children to be linked only to one parent.
I'm not sure if I can past a link in the message. If this link doesn't work, try entering the text " How to enter children without a parent" in the search field for this forum.
Basically, I was told that there was no way to have children with only one parent. I had to create an "Unknown" person as the other parent.
I have a situation where a family member has 2 wives. . The first one is deceased and they have one daughter from the marriage, His second wife is alive and they have 2 children.
I found that if the chart started with the person with the 2 wives then the chart will show both spouses and their resp children However if the chart begins with his predecessors then the chart will display ony the first wife and their resp children.
How do I go about viewing the chart where both wives are shown with their respective children if the chart begins with the predecessor of the person with the 2 wives?
I am trying to enter some information about 4 children in my family tree. I know who their father is, and I know that he was married to two women, but I don't know which woman is the mother of which child.
How can I enter the children so they are linked only to the father, and not to either of the women?
