Since my old software (TMG) is discontinued, I needed to find my new hobby software. After testing and looking through all the major alternatives, I ended up with Family Tree Builder. This was actually the only one that I really liked the GUI they have implemented (and of course, that I can use the norwegian version).
Importing the GedCom file exported from TMG, there are at least two issues I see immidiately;
1; primary picture for each person is lost
2; all notes are gone.
The first problem I can sort of accept and handle, but the second one is a bit more difficult to svallow.
I did try two different ways of importing it into FTB, but both without success. Through the process, I'm asked in the Configuration-page, about administration of unknown marks, and I could choose between Convert to notes, and Ignore. None of these gave me the notes I wanted. Can anybody fill in on this one ? PS: Since TMG is discontinoued, no use telling me to get help there.
Torkild--I deeply regret your Windows 10 problem and did not mean to be flippant about what must be a terribly frustrating experience. Good luck with solving the problem(s) and getting back to a working FTB. Maybe you could go back to your previous version of Windows?
I agree! FTB used to alert you if there were alternate lines, but as of recently, no more. I just asked for a report and it returned as the only line the one through a sister of a second wife, but I know absolutely for sure that there is a direct bloodline, which I wanted to printscreen for the subject person.
So it seems pretty clear that the family tree builder is a poorly made software product, and the support infrastructure is worthless. Given that, what are people doing? What is the best competitor? Should I just give up on the desktop app completely and use the web site?
I have never had any problems with FTB. Your syncing problem may be related to Windows 10--I heard it was not stable yet. I have been on other genealogy sites. Ancestry.com users, among others, are even more unhappy than you are! I, for one, count my blessings.
There is NO problem running FTB under WIN10, I have done that since the first BETA over 6 months ago, without any problems. The sync problem is a MH server problem as easy as that. The information given to me is that MH is reworking both server software and making another approach to FTB, when it comes to store data. Just be patient, they are working on the problems and will have a solution sooner or later.
So to the topic. It all comes down to if you want to have a family-tree program on your computer and be able to upload/sync it to the net, or if you want to work with your tree online. As far as i know there are no similair programs as FTB with an option to sync a tree on the web.
A big problem is that it´s hard to convert data from one program to another. Why? Because you can only export your tree in GEDCOM format to be able to import it to another program, but as GEDCOM is only a way to export text, you can NOT export your photos. Well, not quite true, you can but NOT in an easy way with just "a push on a button".
The best way to filter your research by location is using the Search Map on the bottom of the main SuperSearch page.
In order to find records from a specific country, I would like to recommend you to refine your search by country / state / city by entering a location on the field(s) named: Place. You can also scroll down to the map and click on the specific country. This will rearrange the results placing the most relevant to the location first.
After you have selected the continent (Europe) and country (Ireland) on the countries list, the page that will open will give you on the right side all the Irish collections which you can also click in order to filter even further your research.
Have had no problems with FTB and WIN 10. Used the different BETA-versions for a long time and installed a clean WIN10. Made a backup of ALL my FTB-trees (all files), deleted FTB and reinstalled it and copied my trees back to the right location. No probles so far with anything.
I don't know if you can help me or not but I am putting my family Tree into a book for my family and I can't download my family tree, how do I do it. I am computer dumb and I am old 80 years old so you see that is the reason I can't download my family tree for Authorhouse Publishing.
If the person's information is correct and only the relationship with another person is not, then I believe you do not need to delete that person but you can disconnect the one person from the other (and eventually in the future connect to another person that might be the correct relative).
