I understand that FTL files can be uploaded to Family Tree Builder. My concern is the over 20,000 scrapbook items (jpgs, etc.) that we have in Family Tree Legends. The task of manually re-linking over 20K scrapbook files is not appealing. Is there a way to transfer the scrapbook "links" to Family Tree Builder along with the FTL files?
If not, is there a programmer out there who can write code to make it happen at a reasonable cost?
Changing the default web browser is not done through FTB but through the web browser itself.
Just open the browser you prefer to use as default for everything (and not only FTB) and from tools/options (might be in different sections for different browsers) change it to the default browser.
On the form where you show list of photos and documents, allow word wrap on each column of information. Also, do not need as much room when associating a photo with a person, which would allow more room for the word wrapped descriptions.
Thank you very much for your valuable suggestions!
I have added them to a list of feature requests that we take very seriously. We have already made many improvements to MyHeritage as a result of suggestions like yours.
You can turn-off the automatic updates in your PC Startup.
Click Start then click Run. Type "msconfig" then click Ok. Click Startup Tab on System Configuration Utility then uncheck FTBCheckUpdates at Startup Items (C:\Programs Files\MyHeritage\Bin\FTBCheckUpdates or where ever you installed it), be careful here you don't want to disable important programs. Hit Ok then restart your computer. This will disable the automatic check updates at startup.
You can manually check for Family Tree Builder updates at FTB Tools.
I have boxes that have shown up that say "unknown" in them and I can't delete them. I have been able to delete other boxes with people's names in them, but I can't with the unknowns. I know the delete process, it just doesn't work with these, Any suggestions?
The reason the grey "unknown" shows up when you try to delete someone has to do with the way family trees are built and how the family tree program at MyHeritage works.
In standard family tree logic there must always be a man-woman pair whenever a child exists in the tree.
In order to comply with those standards, the family tree program at MyHeritage also requires a man-woman pair in order for a child to exist in the tree.
This means that anytime there is a child attached to two persons in the tree, and you try to delete one of those parents, the program is forced to keep a "person" in that place. Thus, our lovely unknown.
We are currently working on a better solution to this problem.
In the meantime, your best workaround is to make sure that there are no children attached to a person that you would like to delete.
I understand if this is frustrating for you because, for example, there may be persons "high up" in the tree that you need to delete and it would mean deleting a lot of children in order to get to him/her. The best thing to do is EDIT the information on that person if you can rather than trying to delete him/her altogether.
If you have further questions, please let me know.
When my disk crashed recently, I was faced with installing my family Tree Legends program on a new computer. Here's the problem:
When I reached the step where GenCircles.com is supposed to verify my registration of Family Tree Legends, it turns out the web site is shut down. Also, FamilyTreeLegends.com seems to be shut down. Also, the Pearl Street software web site seems to be shut down.
How can I extract a GENCOM file (very extensive family tree) to import to my new Family Tree Builder if I can't get my family Tree Legends going again, and if I can't retrieve it from Gencircles.com?
There's no way I can proceed with using Family Tree Builder if I cannot import my old, extensive file!
If you have used Family Tree Legends in the past, then I assume you still have an FTL file saved on your computer.
FTL files can be imported directly into Family Tree Builder, no need to create a gedcom file.
In order to import your FTL file, open Family Tree Builder and click on File > Import Gedcom. You will be presented with three options a) import a gedcom b) import a package or c) import and FTL file.
Meanwhile, I am trying to decide whether to switch entirely from Legends to Builder.
While anybody could get to see my family tree on GenCircles without having to register, it seems that registration is required before any of my family members can see the tree on My Heritage.
Switching from FTL to Family Tree Builder is recommended, because FTL is discontinued (no new versions will come out) whereas Family Tree Builder is actively supported and improved on a daily basis by a large group of engineers and support staff.
On the MyHeritage site, visitors can see your tree anonymously but without sensitive info on living people. If you want family members to see the whole tree, invite them first. They won't have to register, a password will be emailed to them with a direct link to view the tree. Moreover, you can make the site a collaborative meeting place for your family and have fun with everyone keeping in touch.
Regards,
I realize I'm resurrecting a rather old thread, but I can speak from VERY recent experience, it is still an important topic.
I suffered a partial hard drive failure which left me having to buy a new computer. Fortunately the vast majority of my data was intact, unfortunately one of the sectors which got corrupted was one where my Family Tree Legends software was stored. It is completely unusable, although my FTL files (and fortunately a 3-month old back up disk, just in case) are intact.
This left me also wondering if the newer Family Tree Builder software would be able to directly import my old FTL files. This led me to these forums and a search provided the answer. However, I had also spent a very frustrating time searching the information on the new Family Tree Builder software trying to find just that answer. If I may make the suggestion (assuming this isn't such an old thread that nobody will see it ) please put some information about this with the "learn more" section. It would be very helpful for those of us who are coming in late to the upgrade.
Family Tree Builder in all its versions issued in the past few years, including the very recently released v5.0, CAN load FTL files directly.
I'm sorry that you didn't find information about this easily.
I see that in the user interface of Family Tree Builder, this isn't intuitive, indeed.
You need to pick Import GEDCOM from the File menu in Family Tree Builder. Then a wizard guides you through importing a GEDCOM file, or a Family Tree Legends .FTL file. In addition, we used to have a pop-up that came up if Family Tree Builder noticed that Family Tree Legends was installed, mentioning to the user that loading the FTL files was supported and recommended: I'm not sure if that pop-up still exists.
Please follow the instructions above to load your old FTL files into Family Tree Builder. I recommend that you then use the publishing option in order to create an online backup of your data, this way any future failures to your computer will not endanger your valuable data.
Regards,
Gilad
Thanks Gilad! I did download Builder and we are now trying it out. Importing our old files was a piece of cake ... once I knew where to look. As for the pop-up notice, it wouldn't have come up for me anyway since that program was on my old (crashed) hard drive and wouldn't have been seen by FTB. The good news (for anyone else coming along and reading this later) is that my old Family Tree Legends (*.ftl) files imported beautifully along with all my notes and facts. The only thing that didn't import were links to pictures and other documents, but they referenced files on my old hard drive and so the links were no good. I don't know if those would import if it had been a regular upgrade.
Now it's just a matter of learning the new interface. Things are definitely different in Family Tree Builder, but it looks pretty easy to use.
I have a web site www.nes-el.com (which I am upgrading rignt now) and I want to add uner the family tree tab the excact full chart (with all the photos) I have in My Heritage:
I tired to copy the link , but than i don't get it exactly ike i have it in the My heritger builder
You can create a chart of your family tree which can be saved in PDF or JPG format and then posted on your personal family web site.
Family Tree Builder and the online family tree display at MyHeritage are not designed to be used anywhere other than MyHeritage.com at this point in time.
