I've had the same problem and I recently, today actually, found a solution. I found another free family tree program that goes through and makes a list of potential duplicates; then you look at the list and decide whether or not to merge them together.
I am having the same problem, but I don't think I entered them twice. I think there must be a glitch in the system. I have e-mailed them and hope to hear from them soon. My Family Tree right now is in a mess because of this. Thanks and let me know if you find out anything, okay? Sue Oravetz
Debbie, No I have lived in Oklahoma City my whole life and attended Capitol Hill High School and graduated in 1962. I just got into geneaology a few months ago and have really been enjoying it. It is amazing the information you can get on line. My Heritage has been really good except the duplicate entry issue, and I think they worked on it and now I don't have that problem. Take care up there in Connecticut. I bet you live in a pretty area. I would like to see more of New England than I have seen. Sue
Be careful what you are doing here or you will really mess up . I have had that problem myself because I entered the same name twice in different parts of the family tree because I forgot that I already entered it. The first thing I did to untangle this mess was a) Click on each of the duplicate entries to see where the two entries show up in your tree b) Delete the one with the minimum of descendents . Depending on complexity of the tree, when you hit the delete button, a dialog box may come up so you can delete the person and reassociate the descendents to new parents. If not , then you have to do it manually ie reassociate each descendent ( of the deleted person ) with the name that has not been deleted. Having learnt the lesson the hard way , I am now very carerful when adding new people , I check the list the left pane to be sure the name is not already there. Hope this helps .
I find the whole smartmatches thing fairly useless. I have about 6000 smartmatches, most of which are wrong and many are just repeats (of wrong matches). When a wrong match has been rejected you would expect the software to remove repeats of rejected matches: it doesn't.
It would seem that smartmatches just show you that other people have a similar name in their tree. Apparantly the algorithm does not really check relationships nor dates, or does not assign much weight to this info.
I would also expect such an algorithm to attach more weight to differences (in dates, relationships,...) than to similarities
Currently, in many cases it boils down to a voting contest.
What really would interest me are primary sources and a possibility of sharing those.
In our newly released Enhanced Smart Matches, we now show you ALL of your matches, the high quality matches and the lower quality ones. The list is sorted by quality, so you’ll see the best Matches first, but we also show you the other matches below, so that no information will be hidden, and all your research potential will be met. If you find that a match is wrong (sometimes siblings are matched with each other for example), just mark it as rejected. the Correct match will most often appear at the top of the list. Marking the match as rejected will help you manage your matches, and will also help us understand that this should not be regarded as a Match in the future.
Regarding sources, please take a look at this FAQ. I think that it will assist you:
How can I prevent Family Tree Builder from automatically changing a woman's last name to that of her husband? I have female family members who kept their parents' last name and yet they show up with their husband's name even when I leave the "married name" field blank.
I can't do anything hardly anymore........my tree won't load online.....just sits there with the arrow going around and around....
can't get software to make smartmatches....just keeps saying I haven't saved and need to publish when I have done both several times...........
software won't keep myself as the home person.....even tho I set it evertime I use it....next time....it comes up with someone else as the home person.....
I could go on and on.........what is going on????????????????????
I have the latest flash, the latest update to software and I use Vista and IE8.....I have tried reinstalling, republishing, nothing works!! my"manage tree" page says my site has 590,928 individuals....no way....it has 130, 219....my tree will not load....it just sits there with the tree and arrow going around.....finally it will say loading error....please refresh browser and try again....but that doesnt work either, I have to reset the home person everytime I open Family Tree Builder.....even tho I save it everytime. My smart matches doesn't work.....it's all going downhill real fast.....the last time I actually got to see the tree online....it had duplicate names everywnere......my children were listed 4 times among other names that are duplicated thruout.....the info under my name said I had a 4th undefined husband and undefined divorce.....the info that I publish is not being published correctly or saved correctly....the help section here is useless.
I have tried to exporter a CSV file, modify it and save it.
When I want to import it, I am told that the file has the wrong headline.
How I solve this?
Og på dansk
Jeg har prøvet at exportere en csv fil, ændre den og gemme den.
Når jeg så vil importere den, får jeg at vide at filen har en forkert overskrift.
