I was married twice prior to my current marriage, my wife has one previous marriage. I set my current wife as my primary spouse, when I try to set myself as her primary spouse it resets mine to my second wife. How do I set each of us as the others primary spouse. It doesn't make sense to me that I am unable to do this.
My issue is I set my wife, Patricia, as my primary spouse then I go to her card and myself as her primary spouse. When I do that one of my exes have been moved up to be the primary. I am not able to have her as my primary spouse and myself as her primary spouse at the same time. I find that to be ludicrous.
On the bottom of the Manage Spuse screenit states the first person in the list is the primary spouse. The button with the green arrow on the bottom right is supposed to permanently rearrange the order of names by marriage date ( latest marriage first)
Was this problem ever fixed? It is really annoying, especially because it screws up the order the spouses are listed when generating reports. (I want things in chronological order.)
I have encountered it a couple of times in my own Family Tree. The problem only appears when there is a 1:2 vs. 1:3 relationship between spouses -- one spouse was married twice and the other spouse was married three times. If you set the order of the spouses for one of the people, as soon as you click save it "reverts" the order spouses for the partner... placing them in the wrong order. Then, if you set the order of the spouses for the second person, it flips the order of spouses for the first one again. Ad naseum... really, really, annoying.
I am still using version 6.x.
I was browsing the various FAQs... came across this older thread and would like to add some comments which, I hope, are still useful ...
ALL data should ALWAYS be backed up, preferably offsite. NEVER rely on a single copy of a file on the web.
Some people have their only copy of a laboriously-constructed photo album online and are surprised when they lose their stuff because the website provider dumps the service, goes bankrupt or has other problems. It does not matter how reputable a provider is!
For any web-based family tree I would also recommend that one downloads at least a GEDCOM file and includes it in the backup set. after each amendment, or at reasonably frequent intervals if several people add to it.
In my own case, as I start from FTB, I save at every amendment and utilise the handy Backup Project facility as well. As this is on the same HDD as the original file I include the backup zip file in the daily backup, as well as the original FTB file.
Earlier backup zip files can be deleted if desired.
I have to declare an interest; we offer a secure online offsite data backup service and are well aware of the issues.
I hope I am allowed to give a 'commercial' link (www.schmetterlingbackup.com). If not, please contact me separately if you wish to discuss further.
Some more points:
1. Backup DAILY or more often, including any downloaded e-mail such as in Outlook Express. Use the FTB Backup Project facility by all means, but especially if it is on the same HDD include it in the backup set of any general backup.
2. Distinguish between file-copying services and true backup systems (which actually reflect what is on your computer.) Ensure that anything you back up to the web is encrypted.
3. At least back up to an external drive, using right software (not file-copying unless you are prepared to sift out unwanted dross).
4. Test file restoration. After a HDD failure it is too late.
5. Ask yourself the question of what it would mean to you if your computer failed today and your data on it potentially unrecoverable.
I realise that but they can then also see the other half of start family, when they go to people, but what I wanted to know was why does this tree show both sides in this one that I manually only inserted one side.???
Ah!!!! Thought, its probably because I've publlished from builder Doh!!!!
For some reason when I choose Polish lanuage in FTB, translation of system commands is done, but all special characters are missing. I suspect that instead of UTF-8 your FTB system is using something else.
I have the same problem iwhen importing UTF-8 Gedcom file generated from Myheritage.com to FTB - import reports Unicode characters 317,269, 318, 328 as not valid for display. I've seen a few posts here in the forum one from 3 years ago reporting the same problem with Central European Unicode characters, so I wonder when it's going to be fixed ?
Apart from that I love the application, it's great, even my mother can use it :)
