The site and the program are different and each is suitable for a different type of user.
Family Tree Builder is the software that is saved on your computer. It can hold more information for each individual in your tree than the site can. It is great for users that want to be the main contributor to the family tree, and have less input from their site members. When you create a tree in Family Tree Builder, you can choose to leave it on your computer without publishing it, or you can publish the tree to your family site. We suggest that you publish the tree to your site as an added backup for the tree. Please note: when you publish a family tree to your family site, the tree becomes read-only on the site. This means that neither you nor your site members can edit the tree on your site. In order to make changes, you will have to edit the tree in Family Tree Builder, and then re-publish the tree to your site.
Alternatively, creating a tree directly on your family site, is great if you would like your site members to add to your tree.
"Next, please use the attached guide to export a branch from your main tree and export that branch only to a Gedcom file that will be saved on your computer.
Then Upload that Gedcom file to one of your family sites."
I do not ee ant attachment, assume this explains how select one family and then do the same for te other.
Oh well. I have had to abandon this project as when I split the trees they get added and that brings the total above that allowed in the basic version. Even though the original dual tree has only 147 members. So I cannot complete the splits.
Pity because then each side of the tree would have been easier for other family members to see just their own family, without having to look through the whole combined tree.
Any time you do a GEDCOM import or export, the photos have to be manually replaced in the tree. There is no function that will transfer the tree with personal photos intact. I'm sorry.
The quota for family tree individuals on family sites is the total number of people in all the trees on the site. You can always create new basic sites for each branch and upload the corresponding tree to those new sites.
Hi, I have an issue similar to this. For the record as I'm logged in with Swedish setting, I can't seem to view that FAQ item.
To begin with, I think it would be really great if you provided some guidance for managing the growing family trees. It's created a bunch of frustration with my non-computer-savvy relatives to see the info of some very distant in-law relatives and has pretty much killed their trust in the site. So I've deviced some key ancestors along which to split our tree, to quite a bit of personal effort.
My concern is the existing pictures in the site, but mainly the existing accounts. If I create a new tree off a branch, what will happen to the accounts associated with those individuals? How can I have them occupy the right people in the new tree as well?
Also of course there is the issue of how to do the split. I suppose I can hack the gedcom (except it will be essential to be able to add and remove people as in a normal tree, does that relate to FTB?) and prune the branches manually, is that still the suggested way or has any development happened in the topic?
Hi - I was using FT Maker for the past 15 years. I recently became aware of the Family Tree Builder Software / My Heritage website and fell in love with it immediately. I've been using it for the past few weeks and imported my tree with around 1900 individuals in it. Howevr I've experienced a couple of technical problems it. Before I list them, here are my computer specs:
Windows XP SP3, 3.0 Ghz CPU with 4 GB RAM.
1) Each time I go to exit FTB, whether I've been using it for 10 seconds or 10 hours a message will pop up that says "Finishing Up" and the program will simply hang. When I use CTRL-ATL-DEL to access the Program Manager, it will say the program is not responding. This has happened with every single use of the software regardless of what I've been doing or how long I've been on it that use.
2) Crashing. Just in the last couple of days, the program has crashed each time I try to add new information to an individual in the tree. Here is the Windows Message that Comes up:
I'm not sure if this is a bug in the program or a problem with my computer. Occasionally while I'm using FTB, on Windows, the FTB button will disappear from the taskbar on the bottom of the screen. I know it is open, because I'm still using it, but the computer is making it look like it isn't.
I'm pretty sure that's not that case as I only have the basic membership and I have 38,000 people in my tree. I haven't been able to publish so the site in over a year. I've noticed that the icon goes away if i use the program for more than a few hours. If i notice it happeing again, I will take a picture and include in this post.
