You write that in the next version of FTB you are opening up the option for others to edit online, and changes will be updated in FTB. Is that new version already live?
I have the same thoughts on security. We have a family tree with 11 generations, and if anybody can start making changes, I am about to become very concerned. Unless you can give them access to limited area. And even then there should be a form of quality control before the changes are being merged with the existing data. A good solution could be that the webmaster needs to verify the new data first.
Another security issue that was addressed on this forum was that all members have possibility to invite others. This feature combined with the fact that all can add or edit data, makes it impossible to control the quality of the new information, and a lifes work could be destroyed in just a few seconds. After all, one does not know who is inviting who to become a member. If a child from a maried-inn lady 10 steps away invites his best school buddy to become a member, and he starts screwing around on the site? A real disaster!
Has the option of restoring a published family tree back to FTB along with all the photos. This is not the full 2 way synch yet, it is only the first step. The full synch is planned for FTB 6.0, which will be our next majour release.
It is possible for the site manager to block other members from inviting new members to the family site.
To do so, go to the Settings > General page, and click on the Administration tab.
Your other point regarding security is very true, and we hope to incorperate such a mechanism in the future.
Thank you for your reply. I have the latest version, so that is OK. It was the 2 way sync feature I was refering to. So as long you include a quality control feature in the new 6 release, that is great. (Like: not confirmed / confirmed). A way to give the admin the time to discuss or check the new data.
I am looking where other users have the possibility to change info online, other then writing in the guest book or adding pictures. So I am talking about adding persons, changing names or dates, even changing relationships, or removing persons online. Can you tell me where to do this? I found some info that if the site is created by an upload from FTB, this feature is notpossible. If the web site is created without using FTB, it should be active. If this info is correct, then my problem is solved.
I am running Tree Builder on Vista SP2. I'm about to install Windows 7 in a couple of days. How do I backup Tree Buider and then make it work under Windows 7? Thanks in advance.
I have an issue and could use some help figuring it out. I live in the USA and work in English with Family Tree Builder. However I have many family members in Slovenia and because of that, there are many special letter characters in Slovenian that I can't get to show up correctly in FTB.
Here is an example, the city, Beričevo, has the special č (the Latin letter c with caron) in it. If I work in any Microsoft Windows program, it shows up just fine. But if I try to use the letter č in FTB (with the language set to English) I get the following character: è.
I have tried to set the secondary language to Slovenian and character show up correctly, but then if I try to compile a report, the city shows up as Berièevo (which wrong), not Beričevo (which is correct).
Do you understand my frustration? Does anyone has a suggestion or workaround for this problem?
Thanks for reading and helping me out this the problem.
Well I gave your suggestion a try. It worked, kinda of...when I created the "Book Report", it no longer used the è character, but instead it used the letter c. I was hoping for it to generate the letter č for the report. Any other guidance would be great.
Thanks for the suggestion Noam. I will give it a try. And yes, it is the "Book Report" that I am trying to create with the special characters. One quick question, when using the Translation Wizard, do you use English as the primary language and Slovenian as the secondary? I am pretty sure I do. Thank you again.
Actually, Family Tree Builder does not recognize the caron over the c for the family tree, either. It accepts accents (I'm using Slovak language keyboard), but not the caron. So the name Pitlanič publishes onto the website as Pitlanic, and Pitlaničová publishes as Pitlanicová.
Noam,
I am still struggling trying to get it to work. I gave your suggestion a try. It worked, kinda of...when I created the "Book Report", it no longer used the è character, but instead it used the letter c. I was hoping for it to generate the letter č for the report. Any other guidance would be great.
Thank you. Jon
The Book Report distributed with FTB produces reports using the ANSI (Western European) character set.
The Book Report is a third party product, which was implemented by a company called TCGR.
The commercial version of TCGR contains an alternative PDF engine which will report all character sets.
To see Eastern European characters as expected, you will need to use the commercial version of TCGR (and pay the registration fee). Then you will be able to select the "Multilingual" PDF engine option as an alternative to the "ANSI only" PDF engine.
Thank you again for your knowledge and help. Your guidance has been great. I will look into the TCGR software add-on you mention. I didn't know anything about it.
I recently had to replace my computer because of a problem. In the process, I lost my family tree. I had saved two family trees. One with 1000 people and one with over 1800 people. I can still get to the one with 1000 people because that one was saved online. However the one with all the work is the one with 1800 people. I have no knowledge of how to get it back....do you???? Please help if you have any suggestions.--Thanks--Ted
Or how can I download an older version of family tree and not the 4.0. Would that get back to my family tree?????
I am searching for a practicable method to connect online information in FTB with offline material my grandfather started to collect. This paper-based heap of information is huge and cannot be scanned or otherwise digitized. My grandfather has used the Henry system (http://www.saintclair.org/numbers/numhenry.html) to refer to each person, and one can thus find the data (more or less easily).
The usual way to create a reference between the online record and the offline material would IMHO be to create a FTB "fact" called "reference number" and then give the Henry number as data. This also corresponds to the way that GEDCOM treats offline references in the REFN field.
However, I can not find a REFN/"reference number" fact in the default list of FTB. When I import and export REFN tags from or to another genealogy program, I get odd artifacts. Am I missing something here?
I know about the "sources" or "repositories", but this is another case, because I am not likely to add a "source" for each individual (I have 10.000 names in the database).
I had the worst time installing it on Windows 7 too (on Release Candidate 1), but I managed to do it. That was a few months ago but I think I installed it using "Toubleshoot compatibility" and telling Windows 7 to act like Windows XP (right-click on the installer to choose this option).
Unfortunately, the function to associate photos with people in your family tree doesn't work very well with Windows 7 when you click on a person's photo place-holder in Tree view.
The browse feature does not work at all, it's impossible to navigate to the folder where the pictures are located and copy-pasting the folder path doesn't work: I click on Browse... and I'm presented with a list of folders which is completely useless because my photos are not in any of those folders. Clicking on the shortcuts on the left (My Recent Documents, My Documents, Desktop and Network) or at the top (Back, Up a level, New folder or change display) does nothing. Copy-pasting the link to the photo (or just the path to the photo) and clicking on Select or even Cancel does nothing. I have to click on the "X" to close that window.
I did manage to associate some photos by clicking on Photos in the toolbar at the top of the program window, but two images won't associate, and they did when I was running Windows XP. It's incredibly frustrating.
I'm using 4.0.0.896. When I tell it to check for updates, it tells me none are found.
