This is ridiculous…. a simple issue like this cannot be resolved with a simple solution. The programme is forcing to use parents instead of parent so we can select the biological parents instead of parents whom the programmethinks should be.
Basically it does not matter how good the rest of the software is this issue gives it a recommendation of"do not use it find something that works and can represent real life relationships". And it seems the solution to the issue is not forthcoming either.....
Thanks for contacting us. It is an easy solution on it.
To indicate that one parent is the biological and the other is not, please follow this steps:
1)You need to add another partner to the biological parent, you can call him "unknown" if you want. If you don't know how to add another partner, please see this FAQ post:
http://www.myheritage.com/help/2010/05/how-do-i-add-more-than-one-partner-in-my-family-tree-builder-tree/
2)Now you need to attach the child to the new parents (the biological parent the person we added in step 1).
To do so, please read this post on how to use 'attach/detach' feature:
http://www.myheritage.com/help/2010/06/how-do-i-use-the-attach-detach-feature-in-family-tree-builder/
3)If you wish, after you attached the child and set the parents as you want, you can delete the person we created in step 1.
Let me know if you encounter any problems.
A few days ago, I began to notice that I no longer had matches for some people. I had previously had matches for 70 people, and now had matches for only 5.
My Smart Match folder showed all the files were still there (you have a SmartMatching.xml file that works like an index, and one file for each person you have matches on, they get created when you close the software). After uninstalling, reinstalling, restoring from backup, etc. I finally figured out what the problem was. Fortunately, I had recently gotten a new computer, so I went back to the old one, got the SmartMatching.xml file from the old installation, dropped it in the folder on the new machine, and my matches came back. For people I've added since getting this computer, I will have to delete them and add them again, which restores the match. Thankfully, there aren't many of them.
While I don't see anything on the forums about this at the moment, a Google search suggests it was discussed here a while back, but has dropped off. A Google search result came up with a link into the Myheritage forums with a preview that says, "Switching to Smart Match by pressing the Matches icon causes the name list to collapse", which sounds a little like what I had happen here. The original forum post is no longer available, and it isn't in Google Cache.
So... What causes this and how do I keep it from happening? It is interesting to note that I never had this problem until I started publishing portions of my family tree to the MyHeritage web site.
I have managed to re-create the problem. It was caused, believe it or not, by clicking on the "Update Now" button in Matches.
I started with 562 Smart Matches for 122 people. I clicked on the button to update it. It immediately came back with only 12 Smart Matches for 5 people. Over 500 matches just suddenly disappeared. And weirdly enough, the 5 people I had left were the same 5 people that were left the last time this happened.
Fortunately, I was prepared for it. Before closing the program, and risking an overwrite of the back up file with the broken data, I made copies of the smartmatch.xml and smartmatch.xmlbackup files. The former was 4.2 KB, and the latter was 17.0 KB. The XML files for individual people were all still there. Closing the program, opening it again and closing it again overwrote the backup data with the broken data. Which is why last time, the backup didn't solve the problem. I had to go get a backup file from another computer.
Continuing to click on the "Update Now" button will not solve the problem. The matches do not come back. I continually get the same 5. I will, however, get matches for any NEW people I add to the tree. But the old people have to be deleted and re-added if I want the matches to come back for them.
What this means... When I add a person who has no matches at the time they are entered, I will never be able to see matches for them, even if at some point in the future someone else publishes a tree with that person. The only way to get matches in that situation is to click the "update now" button... And when I do that, my XML index file collapses.
I have screen shots of this and all the corrupted files saved.
Indeed there is a folder called SmartMatching that contains various file about Smart Matches in your family tree. This information is "cached" on your computer so that even if you are not connected to the Internet, you can still view your Smart Matches. If this information has been removed (e.g., when switching computer) you can simply recreate this information by clicking the Update Now button in the Smart Matches screen. When Family Tree Builder closes this project, it will recache the infromation it got from the server in the files of this folder.
I'm having the same problem, enter a new person and the smart matches appear, publish to web site and only the original 80 matches are showing, upgraded from free version to premium plus hoping this would solve the problem, still the same, I guess I just wasted $100.00 plus dollars Please Help
Hi Noam,
I managed to fix the problem. It seems this problem started to happen when I changed my login password. After changing it, when I log into FTB and try to publish site, it throws bad password error.
I then go to publishing setting - Advanced setting and use another email id password option.
After that I am getting invalid request error.
I fixed this problem by doing following steps :-
I removed all folders of FTB from my pc.
Changed my website password to the old one (I one I used in October)
Installed FTB 4.0
Restored project from October backup
Did the changes in the family tree ?
Published it successfully.
It seems backup of project (zip file) contains password reference somewhere.
Now how can I change my login password again , and not run into this problem again.
Also, after getting all this problem with FTB, I am thinking to switch to Web version of family tree. Is there any tool available to do that ?
on your forum , only way mentioned is to import a gedcom file. But that does not imports photos I guess. And I have around 100 photos, which I have to again upload / tag.
please suggest what will be the best method to do it.
Cheers,
Manish.
then open Family Tree Builder and change the password in two places:
The Publishing > Publishing Settings > Sign in as a new user menu
The Publishing > Publishing Settings > Advanced Publishing menu
You can import a GEDCOM file of your tree to the site, then delete the FTB tree from the Family Site. Choose not to delete the photos. Now all you have to do is tag the photos to the new tree.
But I recommend to wait a couple of months. We are now working on a new version of FTB, where the tree will be editable online.
badly formulated request: bad paramters=site_address
even if I use another user account for publishing, still the same issue.
May be it's possible to do a merge of people from various trees through the WEB interface? I saw the smart matching on the web interface, but could not merge trees...
I am having the same problem. I haven't updated the site for a couple of years and now that I made a few changes I get the message "Invalid request" when I try to publish the family tree to my allready existing myheritage webpage.
I finally was able to connect, deleted completly the connection parameters as I was not able to transfer the log and recreated everything from scratch by deleting the previous publishing parameters.
The small problem is that it created a second tree in the web interface :-(
I have 400 people in the web tree and 323 in the FTB, is there a possibility to merge both tree? or should I export with GEDCOM, import in FTB and delete the 2 old trees?
What will happen if other familly members are using either the web or the FTB interface?
