The Attach/Detach feature should be used anytime you want to create a relationship between two people who are already in the family tree. For example, if cousins who are already in your family tree are married to each other, you can attach them as spouses without listing any of them in the tree twice.
So Attach, as opposed to Add, lets you draw a connecting line between two people who are already in the tree, and Detach removes that connection but without deleting any of the individuals. For each type of relationship there is a way to Attach or Detach. For husband and wife this feature is located in the "Spouses" menu. For children it is located in the "Children" menu. For parents it is located in the "Parents" menu.
There are multiple ways to reach these menus in order to invoke the Attach or Detach functionality. They are all the same so you can pick the one you find most convenient.
A) On the main menu, under Person -
File/Edit/View/PERSON/Family/Charts....
You can reach the Spouses, Children or Parents menus.
B) By clicking on the EDIT button on an individual's genealogy card
C) By clicking on the EDIT button in the "Family" section.
My recommendation for using the Attach/Detach feature is to access it through the MANAGE function (e.g. Manage Spouses or Manage Children). You can always do an Attach/Detach without using this screen, but in the MANAGE screen you can see and adjust ALL details at once, which is very helpful.
Example 1:
If A and B are second cousins who are married, and you want to add this relationship without adding A or B to the family tree (as they are already there), select A, reach the Manage Spouses menu for A, and then select Attach Spouse, and select B.
Example 2:
If you have two unrelated people in your tree, C and D, and you’ve discovered that C is the father of D, you can add this relationship by selecting C, then reach its Children menu, click ‘Attach Existing Child’ and select D.
Let me know if you need more help, I'll be happy to elaborate.
This is a wonderful post. I wish I had discovered this process earlier, because it has been worrying me (I have just been dealing with an unexpected marriage of sixth cousins and I still have a number of duplicated entries that I am trying to sort out). I had searched in vain for how to add spouses who are already in the table to be explicitly dealt with in the User Guide. Since you are part of the My Heritage Team could you suggest it.
Better still--why doesn't the "add spouse" form give the explicit option of including an existing individual. The "manage spouses" option is quite well hidden from the normal user of the tree.
Win XP Pro SP3, last version of FTB. It is reproduced everytime immediately after closing Welcome dialog (Pic1.jpg) and balloon advise popping up (Pic3.jpg). Call stack (looks not informative) is attached (Pic2.jpg).
There is no project file - it is first app installation. :) So steps to reproduce: install app using default options; launch it; close the first welcome dialog concerning Premium update by pressing x-button or choosing free version; close the second startup dialog by pressing cancel or x-button.The same result is observed in case of creating new project or importing GED file right after finishing startup dialog. All ways leads to an exception :)
Thank you. I think the reason is FTB doesn't support east Asia language (Chinese, Japanese, etc) as data language. I hope one day FTB can support them.
I started with the family tree on MyHeritage.com and after it was up and growing I downloaded the Family Tree Builder. I am not real familiar with all the terms used and I want to take all the information on the web page and download it to my computer program. Is this possible or do I have to start over entering all the names?
If you have your family tree on your family site on MyHeritage, please follow these steps to recover/transfer the file to Family Tree Builder:
First, open a browser and log into your Family Site on MyHeritage.com, then go to the Family Tree tab > Manage Trees in your Family Site.
Click the ‘export GEDCOM’ link on top of your list of family trees. This will save your family treeto your computer as a file with a .ged extension. Once you have the file downloaded, and you have properly re-installed Family Tree Builder, you can double click on the GEDCOM file that you exported and it should open up automatically in Family Tree Builder. This should restore your entire project, except for the photos.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.
