This seems to be a problem all round from comments on the forum.
On our recently installed ( Free ) 5.1.0 build 5209 on a Windows Vista Business platform, installed on a fairly high powered Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop, we could never get the photo import to work.
It failed at Photos\Import\Search In every time, the program to failing to respond, resulting in the inevitable program termination.
We also wondered what we were doing wrong, as you do, and sent a mail to the support desk detailing the event.
We also understand how difficult it is for said support desk to supply a solution with the meagre information they have to work with.
Being quite determined, and having had 20 years experience with application software in similar scenarios, we loaded the same file ( it is stored on a server ) to a more mature Dell Optiplex 260, lesser memory/processor speed etc, running a Windows XP Professional platform.
Undeterred, we found an even more mature Dell PowerEdge 500SC, same XP platform, lesser memory/processor speed etc, and it worked first time.
Over the last 2 weeks of testing we have found that all 3 machines exhibit the tendency to load/not load photographs/documents as they see fit.
Sometimes they work well for hours, and then suddenly stop loading photographs/documents for no apparent reason, resulting in program termination.
The photographs/scanned documents etc, all stored on a shared drive on a server, range from 3,776Kb to 608Kb, so we feel size is not an issue in this case.
We too have experienced the "disappearing" photo syndrome after having imported same, as mentioned by another correspondent.
Great program, great features, but suffers the bane of all software, that of reliability.
Will we abandon our aging Family Tree Maker that has served us reliably for 10 years? I think not.
We continue to persevere, but feel we will not come up with a solution any time soon.
While trying to load photos, I get the following error message:
Could not save the photo because the copy operation failed
We have been looking into it, and so far we have been unable to reproduce this issue.
I would like to ask for both of your help in investigating this issue, and seeing if this is a real bug.
Can you both please close Family Tree Builder, then go to C:Program FilesMyHeritagecfg and there you will see a file called main.cfg. Please right click on the file and open it with notepad. Then add the following lines to it:
Save the file. Then open up Family Tree Builder, and try adding the photo again (that is causing the problem). The logging information is written to myheritage.log. In the Help menu, go to "About Family Tree Builder". In the window that opens, right-click anywhere within. In the menu, select "Send logs" A Windows folder opens, highlighting a file called "Send_logs_to_support.zip". Please send this file to me as an attachment at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am wondering if anybody else has FTB freeze up after you enter a person's e-mail address (to invite them to the tree), and then publish the site, and click yes to send the invitation. For me when it is sending the invitation FTB always freezes up, and I need to end the process using Task Manager. Once I go onto the site I see that the invitation did work and send out.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has this same problem with sending invitations, and if it is something with my machine or a bug within FTB.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2 and have Version 22.214.171.12409 of Family Tree Builder. Let me know if you need anymore information regarding this issue. Next time I am sending an invitation out and it happens again I will make sure to take a print screen and attach it to this topic.
I have a laptop with Win7 x64 which I have connected a large secondary monitor as the left monitor and built in laptop screen as right screen. FTB seems not to be able to handle this correctly as i.e Microsoft Excel does. If I double click the title bar the program should toggle between full screen and custom size. It works as long as I have one screen but when 2 screens (different sizes) are mounted the program cant handle that correctly. The program tries to expand it over both screens but it only shows on laptop screen and only half of the image. On the other screen I have a residue of the image before double click. The correct handling is to display it in full screen on one of the screens depending on where I double clicked it.
I can live with manualy resize it but there is also another anoying problem. There is a small empty FTB dialog, not possible to move, minimize or close, centered in the middle of the laptop screen which lays ontop of everything when FTB is active. With the luxury of having 2 screens I want to work with FTB in my large secondary screen and other info in the laptop screen but the visibility is hidden by the before mentioned dialog.
Thank you for your answer. I suspected the reason was the letf/right issue which is common problem with other programs. I actually have 2 monitors connected to a PC and the right monitor also to the laptop. Unfortunatly I cant change my configuration since I need the Main screen to be active all time on both systems, but I can live with the knowledge that it will be fixed in the future.
Something has happend with the information on ancestry. Attached you find father and son and the son is my direct ancestor 27 levels back. His father and mother is relative by marrige???? Not as direct ancestor 28 levels back as it should be. If I recall, this was correct some time ago. The problem shows in both FTB and web page.
From looking at Magnus Bengtsson Minnesköld and Bengt Folkesson Snivel's profiles, I can see that they are related to you by different connections. Bengt is related by marriage because one of the steps is through an indirect ancestor.
Please check these connections in Family Tree Builder and make sure that they are connected in the same way. Fixing a connection will set this right for you.
How do I change the connections? I have found the relative where connections take different routes. One from the father and one from the mother of that person. Earlier I had only one route by marrige to Magnus (and not the one whichis now used for his fader) but after adding several people in the tree I got a "direkt" route to Magnus and a different one (by marrige) for his fader.
I have tried to detach/attach the childern to Bengt Snivel Folkesson. He has 3 sons and When I only have Magnus Minnisköld Bengtsson and Birher Brosa attached it displays "correct" but as soon as I add Karl "Döve" Bengtsson it shows "wrong".
I think I know what the problem is: It says that Bengt Folkeson Snivel is related in 27th generation and Magnus Minnisköld Bengtsson is my direct relative in 27 generation. This mean that it is a shorter way to go through Karl "Döve" Bengtsson than through Magnus Minnisköld Bengtsson by 1 generation. If this is the case I think that direct ancestry must always take presidens befor number of generation. At least in my mind.
I am very unhappy about this as well, as are a number of other people. I don't know if this will ever be fixed--it has to do with changing the algorithm or something. As a workaround I note in both facts and biography notes that these people are actually direct ancestors.
For instance: my father is descended from three children of Charlemagne, but only Berthe de Ponthieu and her husband Engilbert are both identified as direct ancestors. Her brother Pepin of Italy and his unknown wife are both designated as relatives. Her brother Louis the Pious is designated as a relative, but his wife Judith of Bavaria is designated as a direct ancestress--go figure! This happens several times in my tree where persons descend from siblings through cousin marriages, which were extremely common in Europe and are in many parts of the world to this day!
Have You checked if they have the same number of generations between your father and them. I have a theory that it is the number of generations that matters. And if the shortest is by marrige somewhere on the way then that take presidence.
