Occasionally, different antivirus software return what's called a "false positive" message when checking programs for viruses. This is what happened on your computer.
Anti virus software checks for viruses by looking at the behavior of the code in a program or executable (.exe). The antivirus software has a bank of behaviors which it knows are most likely viruses. Basically it knows how most viruses that have been discovered in the past acted and it compares the behaviors of these past viruses to the code of the program it checks to see if there are similarities.
If a legitimate program has even a small amount of code which in any way resembles something in that bank of behaviors, it is possible your antivirus software will falsely claim there is a virus in a program.
As a side note, our founder Gilad Japhet, worked for a man named Yuval Rakavy before starting MyHeritage.com. I'm sure you've never heard that name before, but he is one of the first people ever to discover a computer virus way back in 1988. Yuval is now on the board of directors of MyHeritage.com. We have a lot of knowledge about viruses on our side. :)
I hope this information helps you feel more confident about Family Tree Builderm. I know it is pretty scary when a program you install suddenly looks like it has a virus.
I hope you'll give us another try. If you need more help with anything, just let me know.
A tree as large as yours takes time to process changes in Family Tree Builder. When editing the tree in Family Tree Builder, make sure to close other programs running on your compuer to save memory and help it work faster.
We are currently working on developing a new online tree which wil be much faster and easier to use, which should be out in a few months.
In the meantime, editing your tree online might be faster for this tree. Let me know if you would like to edit your tree online, and I will change the tree settings for you.
The direct import from TMG (The Master Genealogist) V7 or V8 does not work at all. I.e. no names are importet at all. It is no fun having a database of about 10.000 individuals with birth date, ... but without any name.
It seems the product has been published without a single test made.
Can you please send me your tree files to the email address firstname.lastname@example.org, so that I could try importing them for you and checking for the problem?
Thanks for your kind offer, but no thanks...I want to be in control over what I import into your program (especially, since there are copyright problems, not entirely clarified in your licence as to who is the owner of the data....Your company needs to clear that up, so as to make it *cristal clear*...! In that respect, I feel that I am the owner (and legally the only copyright holder) and feel that I will remain so...!!).
The fact is, that your program in its latest version 5 does not recognize the file extension " ,pjc " or ".sqz ", which are respectively the project and backup files of TMG (The Master Genealogist, by Wholly Genes, of which it is stated that your company bougt the so called special Timebridge licence to import these...hm...).
So, as long as these file extensions (or one of them) is not recognized by your program's import facility/wizard, it will not import from TMG.
This is fairly easy to check by you, simply by verifying what file extensions it will import. On doing so, you will discover that the free version of your latest program 5 does not mention these in the import wizard. Maybe it is only available in the premium version of your program ??? (which I did not buy yet !).
Moreover, the (extremely low-2500) limit on the number of names (data) that can be imported, does not exactly entice me...
Thanks for your help, but back to the developpers of your program, I' m afraid...
Importing TMG projects directly into Family Tree Builder is supported as of version 5.1. Please make sure that you have this version of Family Tree Builder and not an earlier one.
You have reported a problem in importing TMG files. If you would like us to investigate it, we would need to receive a zip file with the TMG project that does not load, e.g. by email as requested by Lior. Family Tree Builder 5.1 is using a technology called GenBridge to load TMG files, and it was licensed from the company that produces TMG itself. As with any genealogy data on MyHeritage, you remain its owner, and the site's terms and conditions assert no ownership over your data. In addition, we are requesting your data specifically to troubleshoot the problem you have reported, and not for any other means, and once this is done we will delete the copy you have sent us. However, it's highly likely that you haven't found how to import the files, and it is not necessarily so that importing has been attempted and failed.
TMG projects are somewhat more messy than other genealogy projects because they are not stored in a single file, but in a myriad of files stored inside an entire folder. In order to load a TMG project, open Family Tree Builder and go to File > Import GEDCOM or genealogy file, and select the option to Browse for the file. Look for files with the following extension: * TMG, *.VER or *.PJC. They are files used within TMG project. Once any of them is selected and loaded (doesn't matter which), we determine the folder where your TMG project is in, and we then let the GenBridge technology process the entire folder. We convert the project to GEDCOM and then we load it into Family Tree Builder and it becomes a Family Tree Builder project. We have tested this on many TMG projects and it worked successfully, but we could not have tested every possible customer project or scenario, so it's possible that your project does not work for some reason. If so, we will gladly work with you to pinpoint and resolve the problem.
There is no limit on the number of names that can be imported. You can import any amount and you can have a tree of unlimited size on yoru computer. The limit of 2500 you mentioned pertains to publishing the information to a Premium family site on MyHeritage, which you may choose to do later in order to get Smart Matches on your entire data (Basic sites are limited to 250 names, Premium to 2500, PremiumPlus are unlimited). Bottom line, the import into Family Tree Builder has no limits.
Please try the TMG import again and let me know how it went.
To keep it small, the installer of Family Tree Builder does not carry all the files in it. For example, it does not have the GenBridge file conversion component and it does not have a large number of chart styles and backgrounds. Right after installing Family Tree Builder successfully, it starts downloading those additional auxiliary components, and if you have a reasonable Internet connection this takes no more than 1-2 minutes. They get installed automatically and silently.
The fact that you are not seeing the conversion options for TMG is a clear indicator that in your case, the auxiliary components were not downloaded. This may happen if you immediately disconneted from the Internet after downloading Family Tree Builder, and are keeping the Internet connection turned off while you are running it. Because of this, you are not getting the capability to load TMG files or files of other types (except GEDCOM and FTL which is built-into Family Tree Builder). Please be sure to be connected to the Internet to let Family Tree Builder a chance to download the components when it is running. In Family Tree Builder's tree view, you will see a message at the bottom that it is downloading auxiliary components, along with the percentage of progress.
Alternatively you can install a full version of Family Tree Builder that has all the components in it. It's a download larger than 70mb than can be taken from here:
After installing the full version or letting your current version download the auxiliary components, options to convert TMG files will automatically become available.
I'm not sure, however, that you will find the direct conversion superior to the handling of GEDCOM files. In some cass it is superior, for example Ancestry's Family Tree Maker has a crippled GEDCOM export that does not include photos, so loading FTM's files directly using the new GenBridge technology is the best way to preserve those photos when moving the project into Family Tree Builder. As to TMG, the jury is still out on whether results are more accurate via GEDCOM or via direct conversion. You are welcome to try, and report your findings.
Please update me whether you have met with success.
My father's cousin married Tikva Cohen, she was adopted by Lydia Christensen in Jerusalem in 1928, Lydia is not a member of the family by blood, but she brought Tikva up as her own child, from the age of one, how can I put Lydia on to my family tree,
I have a family tree on MyHeritage.com. I want to export a GEDCOM file to my computer so I can import it into Family Tree Builder, edit it, then import it back onto the web site. But when I click the Export to GEDCOM button, I get a message "Your GEDCOM file is being generated now. This typically takes a few minutes.
When it is ready you will receive an email with a link to view it.", but no file ever arrives in my email and the export web page does not change.
I can see that the email with the GEDCOM file was sent to you on May 27. Generating the file takes time according to the size of your tree, and since your tree has almost 500 people in it, it takes more than a few minutes.
I have a minor, but annoying problem when importing from excel. I had to make some adjustments to Surnames, so I exported to excel to do a global alteration, then imported back. However I lost information in the process. I don't know whether it didn't export, or if it did, it doesn't import back.
In the Facts tab I added the Birth & death registration number (see attachments) in the description field. This is where the problem is. It appears the information in this field does not want to either export or import. Is this a bug or am i using the wrong report export? Is this field supposed to appear in an export/import situation? If not could it PLEASE be added to reports as I have spent a lot of time entering that particular information and I don't want to have to do it all again. I have not checked the facts in the marriage section, but I am assuming the same thing happens.
BTW: FTB1 is before export, and FB2 is after import
