In order to create the relationship between two family members who already exist in the tree, you will want to use the Attach/Detach feature.
The Attach/Detach feature is used anytime you want to build a relationshipbetween two persons who are ALREADY in the family tree. For example, if cousins got married, it wouldn't be suitable to create a whole new genealogy card for each one because that means they would be listed in the tree twice.
What you want to do is to create a new type of relationship for them. This is where the Attach/Detach feature is helpful. It lets you draw a connecting line between two people (or erase one in the case of Detach). For each TYPE of relationship thereis a way to Attach or Detach. For husbAND wife this feature is locatedin the "Spouses" menu. For children it is located in the "Children" menu.
There are several different ways to get to these menus:
A) On the top menu bar under Person
B) By clicking on the EDIT button onan individual's genealogy card
C) By clicking on the EDIT button in the"Family" section.
My recommendation when using the Attach/Detach feature isto do it through the MANAGE function (e.g. Manage Spouses or ManageChildren). You can always do an Attach/Detach without using this screen, butin the MANAGE screen you can see and adjust ALL details at once which ishelpful.
OK, maybe I'm totally stupid but I cannot find this "linkin" feature anywhere ... I accidentally unlinked myself (Marketa Laskova 1976) and my fiancee (Frantisek Fisl 1970) and I'm unable to put it back together ... can you be pls. more specific about where is the managing tool?
What if I want to work on my family tree on a different computer?
The correct way to move a project from one computer to another (if both are
running FTB) is to export the project as a package, and then import that package. A
package maintains your data exactly, byte for byte, and can also include all
your photos.
To manage packages, go to File > Manage Projects in FTB. Click
any project listed and select export package. On the other computer, go to
File > Manage Projects and click Import package.
You dont need to do it via Gedcom export/import. The Gedcom format does not
support all the features that FTB supports in its internal format (which we
call .ZED - zipped Gedcom), so some unique FTB features might be lost. For
example, projects in FTB can be in multiple languages but when you export a
Gedcom file you can only use one language.
You should use a Gedcom export only if you are taking the data to another
application or Website.
Our latest version of FTB (536) will include Backup and Restore options in the file menu to help you with this.
I tried to download the GEDCOM file of an online created Tree (because I want others to manipulate too) and the package of the photos from the "photos" section - I thought I could then first import the GEDCOM in FTB, then Import the photos and make the connections "per hand"....
BUT: I cannot import the pictures - they cannot be found, but they are there and can be opened by other programs. It seems, that there is some problem when downloading the pictures from web because the same pictures where found if I overwrite them by the originals from my harddisk.
I tryed other pictures and some where found, some don't. Can you tell me which pictures can be found? Is there a problem with jpg?
Thanks for this tip. I have uploaded a family tree with a lot of photos with FTB.
I have also invited a lot of people to work together on the familiy tree and web site.
Question: How can the members of a site download the .zed including the photos so that they can also work offline with th FTP and sync their parts to the web site?
I have managed to download the .zed file from the web site, but it does not include the photos.
