i would like to add some people to my family tree ; I know they are part of my family but so far, I am only able to provide their names and basic information collected on the web without the details of the relations.
Is it possibile to add the person alone, in order to add some details, and to link them to my existing family members later ?
I just noticed today that whenever I try to input a January date at my online family tree, the date gets corrupted. I have the exact date -option selected (that is, I give for example a date 2nd January 1878) and the system automatically changes it to free text field as soon as I press the ok button. I try to correct the date back to exact date and it may change, but as soon as I look at another person on my tree the date changes back to free text and doesn’t show correctly anymore. This only happens with January dates. Is there a fix for this?
I'm new to this site and have started creating a family tree. For one of my family members, I entered his birth name but I know that he changed both his first and last name in 1946. Is there a way to enter that into the tree without just adding a note? I want to keep both original and changed name.
You can add extra names to a person on the Family Tree Builder.
Double-click on the person's card in the tree -- or click on the 'Edit' button on the bottom right of the person's card -- and on the window that opens, click on the 'Names' button. (See the screenshot below).
On the "home" page of my account I am asked to ad my parents to my family tree. This will add 8% to the final completion of my family tree. I am asked to add their names and their birthdays. My problem is that they are already added to my family tree, but it seems as the system does not recognize my parents.
I am playing with the idea of creating a second tree on my site, one that is actually the "light" version of the original one. A long time ago my tree become too heavy with information because there are too many people in it (I guess many of you can relate to that, since I have not even the biggest tree with my 2641 people). So a second tree with only the parents, grand parents, etc and without brothers, sisters, etc seemed a good idea too me. But I am not motivated at all to start re-entering all the data, so is there any easy idea to create such a tree? Like copy paste a person from one tree to another, or any other method to facilitate the whole thing?
Thanks a lot, this worked perfectly. Exactly what I wanted. But as usual there is a new question that popped up:
when I open the new tree on the site, it does not start with me (like the original tree did) despite the fact that the GEDCOM export was done by selecting me, and when I open the tree in the FTB, I am the "home person".
Again thanks for your fast help. And again your solution is correct.
I just find it strange that the option "start at the person who logs in" is not doing exactly that. I would understand it if I were a user who isn't present in both trees, but I am. Especially starting at a person born in the 1600 instead of me, lol.
Now with your help, it works for me, but probably not for other users, they have to look at me first, lol. Whatever, thanks again it was nice getting those fast and helpful responses.
A quick search showed that, as far as I can tell, this has not been covered before.
I have a family member who was an illegitimate child; his mother later married another man and this man also adopted him. So his mother is his natural/biological mother, but his father is his adoptive father.
At the moment I can only find the option to mark both parents as either biological or adoptive.
I am using the Family Tree website and not the software.
In order to solve this, you will need to first add the biological father (it can be a blank persons card), now you can attach the mother and the blank card as the biological parents, and then the new father as the adopter.
This is the step I mentioned in my first post: it won't let me add only one parent as adopting - it adds both. But the natural mother married the adopting father, so marking her as adopting as well isn't correct.
This is one of those things you can't do online. In FTB you first create the natural parent child relationship. Then create the adoptive parents, the parent and temporary partner. Then set up the relationship with the adopted child. Then remove the temporary partner.
I have done this three times with equal success. The adopted child will appear in the family with a dotted line.
Many of my relatives have already entered in a lot about the people I have in my family tree. It would be very nice to be able to copy the facts - not only the Basic Data that can be copied through Smart Matches.
To do this you need to to a Smart Match and go into each person you want to copy info. Another way is Record Matches. A third way is depending om Smart Matches but I have e memory of Family Tree Builder is able to copy info bulk, several persons in one go.
All these methods require Premium or Premium Plus subcription.
