I have been adding data to a branch of my tree. I have now been given a gedcom file from a family member ( who doesnt use MyHeritage) who has much more detail than I have. I would like to import their data onto my tree.
Is there any way to merge the datasets? I am only using the Online site.
A couple of things I would like to explain before we go to the actual instructions on how to merge trees:
1. The process of merging trees can only be done with Family Tree Builder (click here to download it for free).
2. The merging process is not automatic. That means, that you actually will have to merge duplicate people inside the final project manually. Therefore, we only recommend the merging process for two different trees which do not have many of the same people in each one of them. For example: if you receive a file from someone else that already includes you and all your siblings, children, etc... By adding it to your own tree, you wil have all those people appearing twice. It is better to merge when you actually have a branch of a tree that none of the people exist on your own tree, and then you have to simply link that new branch to someone who's already in your tree. Example: if you don't know who your grandfather's mother is, and then you receive a file with all the branch of his mother and you simply will connect that branch to him.
Having that in mind, please click on the link below in order to read a comprehensive explanation on how to merge trees:
As you may know, I'm building my family tree using MyHeritage service. I got another problem. As the tree grows bigger and larger, the size view of the tree is getting ridiculous, especially horizontally. So, can we have an option to rotate the text into vertical position (well, including the person card) when the tree goes beyond a few generations?
Do you know the extra gem on the top right corner of a person card to expand a particular tree? It's very useful. But, why can't we have the same useful trick to collapse an open sub-tree? :)
I build a family tree for my family. I found that the order of siblings in the tree is not consistent. Sometimes it is ordered by the birth date, but sometimes it is ordered by something else. Especially if I add a descendant to the tree below the siblings, it will cause them to change the order. I don't know it is re-ordered based on what criteria.
Is there a way to make the order consistent? I want siblings on every level are ordered based on their birth date, consistently. So simply by looking at the family tree, one would know which is the elder or the younger of the sibling, without digging into their birth date.
Also, if one has more than one spouse... I expect they will be ordered by their wedding date. So simply by looking at the family tree, one would know which spouse is married before or after the other spouse(s). I thought this is a common sense.
I can understand your request, but the display of the siblings in the family site is generated with a very complex system. All persons have to be shown in the correct relationship to each other. Sometimes the order of the siblings cannot be maintained, if other branches are attached to one of the siblings that would cause the tree view to look disoriented. Therefore the system tries to arrange every person in the best way so the tree doesn't have big wholes or lines and you do not have to scroll through empty spaces to see the next person.
However there is still room for improvement of course and I will pass that on to the developers.
Yes, I can understand the complexity. It's hard but it's possible. I've tried other genealogy services, some of them can display the order of siblings correctly (by birth date) without ruining the look of the whole tree. I don't know the details (the algorithm or something) but I know it's very much doable. It's acceptable on the online site since it's dynamic and could display the correct order once in a while (though I don't understand when and why, it's just so). But I don't think it's acceptable on print. I was about to print a branch of my family tree until I noticed that the order of siblings is incorrect. So I canceled it.
I do really hope this will be improved sooner than later because I think this is a serious and important matter. Send my regards to your developer. Good luck. :)
For some time now it have buged me that my web site news column is littered with news of members getting other new memberships. I cant see the relevance of that information in my tree. I cant find any filter that can take this information away but manually remove them. It is my web site and should be my news I want to show my members.
I am the sole web manager to the site and should then also be the only one that has the rights to add something there. Also I dont like the information about mutualy confirmed smart matches there. Important information is fast pushed down the drain and drowns in the volume of insignificant information.
We are just talking about Articles - up on your APPS menu. You can add Articles to your MH site, and you can display them on the front page if you wish and invite comments from others who share your MH site.
In the editor I use to type my Articles there is a button to add a link to another page or website. However, the editor is corrupting the links. Hence my explanation of what isn't working.
Felipe was just offering to have someone investigate the problem and get it fixed up.
I'm trying to create an All-In-One multiple page printable family tree. I keep getting the error "Error! Please generate the chart again". I can create a single-page tree, but it's ridiculously small text.
I'd do single page if I could select paper types larger than Letter / A4. I have access to a plotter which prints size E (44" across).
You can also choose the text (fonts) size by changing it on the "Advanced settings" page, whilst you are creating the chart. On the first page of the chart section, click on "Advanced settings" on the top of the page.
Some of my invitees to my family site are no longer receiving Calendar Email Notifications of Birthdays and Anniversaries which they were previously getting. How to I get them back on the list of those receiving the Emails?
We currently don't offer the option to 'block' one specific member.
What you can do is actually promote to site managers every people you want to give the privilege of editing the tree and leave others only as members and then close the access of members in editing and adding information on the tree.
Please, read the articles below that will give you an idea of what I just told above.
I think the member's access right and privilege setting is inadequate. There are some cases where we need to accomodate access requirement which can't be simplied as site manager and not site manager. I have a proposal how to handle this. I'll post it on the appropriate room. I hope MyHeritage will consider my proposal as I believe it would be needed by everyone as well.
