Hi Esther--There is nothing wrong with my tree either on FTB or published on-line. All 1467 persons are there. The problem is with the display. Only one branch is displayed and you have to click on a person with a leaf to get to another branch. In the List on the left only a portion of the 1467 people are searchable. At the bottom of the list it tells you how many of the 1467 are listed--about 400 or so. A few months ago the whole page used to be filled with people and all 1467 names were listed and searchable--I would like that fully functional again. I thought I was perhaps doing something wrong until I saw the same was happening in other trees on websites that are accessible to me. Thank you for your quick response.
We have changed the way that the family tree is displayed online, to make the trees easier to see and faster.
Although we no longer list all of the people that are currently shown in the your tree in a list on the left of the screen, you can search for anyone in your tree in the new search bar right above your tree. This will bring you to that person in your tree.
We are sorry that you cannot see the whole tree at once, but the tree is pruned, so that whatever branch you are looking at is clear and loads efficiently.
I much prefer the slower but complete way. Could you make it an option? By the way, the searchable list seems to be confined to the number of people that are designated/calculated to be in that branch, sometimes as few as four! Using the 'People' in the (NOT new) toolbar is very slow and clumsy.
BUT 1, before there was two tabs, person and list.
With those tabs it was easy to navigate and still have the tree to the right.
And sometimes you just need the personslist to check and compare with the tree.
Now you have to click the Person in top menu, and then you are leaving the tree.
The view with the tabs was easy to handle, now it feels as user friendly as before.
BUT 2 : The biggest problem is that branches in the tree are unpredictibly cut. Before you could see the whole tree spreading out generations backward on both sides of the family (my parents, all the grandparents, all great grandparents....).
NOW for example an pair of grand grandparents (or just one of them) suddenly are replace with an branch-antenna.
NOW you are loosing the great picture of the family tree, the overview is lost. And that was the great strength with MyHeritage.
OK that it was slow sometimes, but there must be a better balance with speed and correct presentation.
It is so nice to know I am not the only one suffering from the dilemma of My Heritage's new presentation. You explained it so aptly in your last reply to Esther. I am all for change, but not when it is a step backwards. I never even questioned the speed, but rather just reveled in seeing the whole spread at one time...aesthetically balanced and beautiful. My Heritage is the only family tree program I have seen that presents it so beautifully..or I should say presented I guess...they have really dropped the ball on this one. They should at least give us an option to accept or refuse the different presentation.
Hi Ing....well I guess this is a case of "no news isn't good news".....it would appear that sending in screenshots is the end of communication...period. I haven't heard from Esther since I sent them in. I think we are stuck with a change they have made "in our best interest" according to their thinking...and one that has caused me to lose interest in the site altogether...so sad. I used to visit my site every day...oh well...life goes on....just wanted to touch base...have a great day...Joanie
I miss the being able to see people of the same generation across different branches. I did not have a problem with it being slow. The change has dampened my desire and interest in visiting my site which I have worked on earnestly for more than two years.. It does not have an asthetically balanced appearance...just looks like something is missing...which it is!!!!!!
I wish they would give us options for accepting the changes that are so drastic as this one....I wonder if we are a minority in our thinking...Joanie
Karl-Erik Lonnkvist in this forum thread agrees with us. I wonder how we can find more people to petition for the slower but complete display as an option? I gather that myHeritage is struggling to integrate a German company right now, so it probably is not a good time for them. Still, I think we ought to try, for I, too, have been working on my tree for two years and do not like what I see on-line right now. I could sure do without some of the glitzy photo stuff, which I never use, but I am afraid that it is supposed to appeal to the younger, non-literate generations. There are over 80 members in my site. I guess I could canvass them. By the way, a really nice feature is clicking Family in the Family Tree toolbar--it lists all the family names, so that you can quickly determine in another tree if there are names in common.
I have to ask the same question as Karl Erik "what technical reason are you referring to....and it worked before, why not now.
I am not expecting to see the whole tree at one time as you indicated. I am only expecting to see either 3 or 4 generations according to which way I set it. I am just expecting to see the same generations on my husbands side as is shown on mine. Instead he has the leaf that has to be clicked in order to see his side at all, making my side disappear. If this is the new change you have made and I am stuck with it just tell me and I will waller in my disappointment and probably not visit my site.
Refresh me on how to do a screen shot and I will send it to you...thanks Joan
'Joanie'--when I sent the screenshot attachments as a Forum reply, I did not see them, so I also sent them as attachments to an e-mail via my yahoo account to firstname.lastname@example.org, hoping that would work. Good luck!
Can you each please mail me at email@example.com a screenshot illustrating the issue with the view that you are not satisfied with.
To take a screenshot, press the Print Screen key on your keyboard; it is the key labeled as “PrintScreen” or "PrtSc". This will copy an image of the MyHeritage screen to your clipboard. Once you have done this, click the Windows Start button in the bottom left corner and run MSPaint. It should be under All programs > Accessories > Paint. Once it's open, click Paste from the Edit menu, or simply press CTRL-V. Now you can save the screenshot as an image file and attach that image to an email and send it to me.
I will look into your request and forward it to the development team for consideration.
Esther....after several conversations about the addition of the leaf which lets me view only one branch at a time, I sent you two screenshots, one of Herb's branch and one of my branch. these were sent on February 14....more than two months ago...and I never heard from you again. If this is your new plan for viewing our trees and not just something you are working on, please just tell me so and I will console myself to the fact that I no longer have interest in the manner in which the tree is viewed. This will be difficult for me because I have worked for more than two years building and researching and found the My Heritage site the most exceptional way of displaying family trees. I do not like or enjoy the way it is viewed now....would just like some kind of answer to put it to rest in my mind....thanks...Joan Taubin
Thank you for writing to us, and for sending me the screenshots of this issue.
As I explained to you then in response to your screenshots, we are sorry, but for large trees, we are just unable to show the whole tree at once, or even two equal sides of the family. We have recently changed the algorithms determining where trees are pruned in the tree, and what can be shown at once. We apologize greatly for the inconvenience, but hope that you will continue growing your tree nonetheless. All that you have to do to view the other side of the family is to click on the leaf for that branch.
I have sent you 3 screenshots last week concerning these errors and errors that came with the newer presentation of the tree, but still I do not have any confirmation from you if you received them or not!
Hi Karl-Erik Lonnkvist--Esther asked me and 'Joan' to do the same. I did not see the attachments on my reply on the forum, so I also sent the screen shots as attachments to a regular e-mail from my yahoo account to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Yes, I saw your conversation and I really hope MyHeritage can admit that there have been a change that made the tree difficult to read AND that several severe errors have been implemented in the veiws.
Had several conversation directly with MH this week, and sent many examples of errors. Some have been accepted as errors, others am I still waiting for a replý.
Those examples I sent thursday and friday, I have not got ANY respons of, even after that I tried to send a reminder.
Hopefully, the silence is a good sign, that they realized the mistakes and corrections are coming.
Hi Esther--Thank you so much for your reply. I have attached: 1)an image of the family tree as it appears on-line on the Munch Family History Site at myHeritage.com and 2)The same portion of the family tree as it appears on FTB and which I was able to see on-line some months ago and which I hope myHeritage will reinstitute as a view option of the on-line tree. Thanks again for listening to us!
