I am pretty new at this FTB and MH site and I have been posting relatives into my tree from a family record book done in the 1990s. Now I am trying to up date the family tree and contacting cousins who are quesitoning how secure the site is. I can say that only those I invite to become members see the details on the family but is that really true? These Smart Matches compare my family tree with other's trees so I would say the site isn't secure at all is it? I find it frustrating when people make all their family members private as then how can you see if they match. It is a tough decision to make in this day and age of "identity theft". What do I tell the relatives? I have confirmed matches with a family in Europe who are very, very distant and was excited to because they had info on past generations that I didn't have, and they appreciated getting my info for the Canadian immigrants, but I don't know them and certainly can't assure my cousins that their info will be safe with them.
I wish there was a way of having different levels of security that you could assign to different relatives.
Living people can only be fully shown for tree members. For others they will show as Private. In their profile you only get their relatives and if a relativ is not living you will see more info on that person.
It is only the manager of a tree that can give membership of the tree. However it is possible to give more than one member the manager roll so just give the others viewer roll.
Thanks for responding to my question. I pretty much had it right then that anyone you give membership to can see the information on your tree. I am glad you clarified that when comparing Smart Matches the general public can only see those who have passed away. I didn't know that was why there were so many marked private.
I still wish there were different levels of security that you could use in this day and age of "identity theft".
I am glad you clarified that when comparing Smart Matches the general public can only see those who have passed away.
This is not fully correct. If you use a function that is offered via Family Tree Builder you can copy complete branches of a matching tree, including living persons that had not been in the corresponding tree before. I know this because it happened to me.
This is why I stopped using Smart Matches although I find Smart Matching very helpful.
So you are saying that people who you "didn't" give permission or confirmed the Smart Match have been able to copy your family tree? That is very concerning as then anyone could get private, personal information that could result in them stealing their identities. How would you know this has happened?
How I got to know that it had happened? Smart Matches told me.
As there was confidential data among the data I was shown by Smart Matches, the source of the data could only have been my tree.
I contacted the owner of the matching tree and confronted him with this. He was not aware that he had copied "living persons" - he just had copied what had been offered to him. I asked him to delete all data from living persons that he had copied, and I was lucky that he did so.
Oh, btw, our tree has been a "private" tree and still is.
I have been ignoring the Smart Matches as I have been too busy inputting my own data but maybe I should start paying attention to them and deleting them as I receive them. Although I believe many are distant relatives that probably have info that I don't have from our European ancestors, so it is tempting to contact them. But I don't want my living relatives data compromised. Once again I wish there were different levels of security that a person could assign to different parts of their family tree.
This is hard to describe. But I believe it is possible to create a family tree in Family Tree Builder, as I have done, which eventually lists the same husband and wife in two different places. That is, two divergent lines have off shoots that reunite in another part of the famiily tree. When this happens, it doesn't seem correct to start duplicating entries for decendents in two different places. Question: Is there someway to join-up these two lines?.... I hope I have described this so you can understand my problem..... :-) Thanks.. Tom
If there is a couple that are already in your tree you just select the choise of adding an existing person as partner. The same goes for children and parents. Mark the person card and right click and select the correct relation and there you have the add existing choise.
My father and mother are related about 7 generations back which I was not aware of until I began my research, and it is a common thing for the FTB.
Thank you Anders for your reply. Can you please explain this process to me again? I tried following your instruction and was unable. I can't seem to find the "add existing" choice... Thanks again... Tom
I use FTB in swedish and did not have access to it erlier so I had to translate it from memory. Obviously FTB in english dont use the same frases as I translated them.
For a person you want to add existing Parents, Spouses or children you have to select the persons card. In that card you have the Edit button. Press that and you will have a window with the choises Edit Details..., Person, Patents, Spouses Children etc. Move Mouse pointer to the Parents choise and there you have the different choises of handling Parents. There you can attach existing Parents or remove them or add a new pair of parents if you had added an incorrect pair. You do the similar thing with adding an existing spous or child.
On another subject, I'm an avid fiddle player. At a fiddle camp I attend in the state of New York, I sometimes take Sweedish folk fiddle classes which are very enjoyable. I havn't quite got the hang of Sweedish dancing yet ... but it is fun to watch!
I have a number of pix and documents that are in the photo library. However, they are not associated with anyone. In other words if I open the profile on Bob Smith, his document or picture does not appear unless I enter it on this page. But I can see it in the gallery in a folder called documents. How do I get them out of there and put in Bob Smith's profile. Or, how can I point to that document located elsewhere?
I was a bit uncertain about this but yes, it works. I added a new 'unrelated' (to anyone else) person to my tree and called her Mary; and clicked in the button for 'female'.
So I had a pink card for Mary; then I added a spouse, 'Helen' and again clicked on Female; a box appeared with the message,'Are you sure about this, she is a girl too' (or something like that), so I clicked on 'Yes', so now I have two people, both on pink cards, both female, joined as spouses. I entered the status as Partners which is probably the most likely; but all the options are available to you.
How do I re-invite a member that has already accepted the invitation once but has lost that email address and wants me to re-invite her on her new email address. No matter what I do her status still shows that she is a current member with the old email address. I trired deleting her and adding her again it just keeps the old information.
Is it possible to write my information in more than one language? Most of my extended family speak only Arabic, but I want to write my info (name for example) in English as well so I can find better matches. Is this possible?
So I want to be able to write my name : First Last
and when you click on it, it shows it in arabic as well الاول الاخير
