As far as adding the child, just add them to your mother with no father. It gives you the option to affect that relationship when you add the child. I don't think there is currently any way to show both birth and adoptive parents on the same tree at the same time in any meaningful way. Only way I can think of is to show either adoptive or birth parent and make a comment as to the situation.
My husband and I have a child each that is not related to the other spouse. I can't seem to add them without the 'tree' showing that we are parents of both (and one of us was 14 when we bore children). We both want to show our child but want it to be accurate also. Can it be done?
My nieces and nephews married now but have kids by someone else and there spouse have kids to, I did mines like this:
nephew name and spouse name, she already have kids, so when I add her daughters I click on name and went to nickname and put stepdaughter of his since I do not know father's name and it will show under child profile.
On some since he the father and need to add mother's name, add daughter, click on names and went to nickname and add her mother's name and birthdate and click ok. It shows on child profile. I hope this would help you.
When you add a child there is a pull down menu between the name at the top and dates at the bottom. If a parent already has a partner on the tree it will ask you if you want to use that partner, add a new one, or not use a partner at all.
I have had a glitch on my computer, I was managing 2 trees: The McMullen Clan website and Nagle/McMullen site, I now can't find the Nagle one and as I told in an earlier email the McMullen Clan has wrong person as my husband and my proper husband is nowhere in the tree now so I would like to upload the tree I have on Family Historian as that is correct,. By the way during the glitch I lost any sign of Family Tree Builder and downloaded it again, how can I upload the full tree from Family Historian which has 6876 individuals? I was thinking I could upload a gedcom file?? but how do i get it into family tree builder? Thank you for you help in advance.
Under the "file" pull-down menu of FTB, you find "import GEDCOM." This should allow you to import your GEDCOM file into FTB after you exported it from Family Historian. Yet, you need to check the resulting structure carefully. There is no guarantee that everything will be imported. Different applications make use of different supersets of the basic GEDCOM format, and in all likelihood, FTB will not be able to recognize features(tags) of Family Historian that do not belong to the basic set of the standard GEDCOM features, which are rather limited.
When you import a GEDCOM file from another application, the importing application (in your case FTB) will simply ignore those tags that it doesn't understand and do so without giving you any warning.
In particular, many genealogical programs now support pictures. However, pictures do not form part of the original GEDCOM standard, thus different applications handle them in different ways. I would therefore not be surprised if you would lose all of your pictures in the import.
I notice that you are a top-level user. Thus, your trees should have been backed up by MyHeritage. It might thus be a better option to restore your trees from the last backup, and then export those trees to FTB.
It seems as though i cannot add half siblings? Either that or im dim. . . Either way i would appreciate some help.
I have 2 half siblings i share a mother with one and i share a father with one. The program refuses to accept this?
My mother and father where never married and now both have other partners with whom they have children, they are my half siblings. The program wont let me add my half siblings and let them both be related to me while understanding that they are not related too each other and that MY parents are not the parents of all of my siblings.
I have attached an image of how i see the family tree and it seems relatively simple, yet i cannot work out how to do it in the program!
This can be made to work. However, it is a bitt difficult for me to help you, because I don't know, what precisely you did. You didn't even write whether you use FTB to generate your tree or whether you do it interactively on the website. It matters, because the way to fix your problem is a little different in the two setups.
If you first build the trees of your father and of your mother separately, then you cannot add yourself to either of these trees, because the software will automatically associate your record with your parent and his or her current spouse.
You may need to get your parents "married" before adding yourself to the tree. Once you got your parents married, you can enter yourself, and if and when you attach yourself to one of your parents, the software will ask yo, who your other parent is, because each of your parents will have two spouses on the tree.
Once this is all in place, you can get your parents "unmarried" again, changing their status to "friend," and you will still remain a child of both of your parents.
I find this very messed up. People have children out of wedlock all the time. I guess this site is not thinking about accomidating those people. In the real world people have kids without getting married or getting married. So fix the software and the site so that you don't have to go through all the hassle to add half siblings and their parents, and parents and children to unwed families. I hope this helps to not frustrate every person who tries to build a family tree who has relative who have children out of wedlock.
PLEASE, I want an answer to my question, can I have it ?
What happened wiht my request ? Is someone dealing with this issue ? Please tell me what the technical department has done in this matter. Best regards,
What is the status of this request ? I now get all sorts of wrong birthday reminders, like people born on 10th of February showing up with birthday of 2nd of October. Quite anoying.
