I don't use Family Tree Builder. I created the tree here by uploading a GEDCOM file that was created by The Master Genealogist. One of my Norwegian cousins create a person called Kona til Ole (Wife of Ole) because he didn't realize that my great grandmother (Ole's wife) was already in the database.
On the What's New page it simply says, "Leif Kåre Eikeland updated the details of Kona til Ole in family tree: Tagshot. It doesn't seem as if Kona til Ole appears in the regular family tree: NEWEXPORT. So I guess it's not really messing anything up, but is Tagshot a hidden family tree for all of our friends, coworkers, etc., who appear in photos? Is there any way to access Tagshot? I've already fixed the tag on the photo in question.
You can export a gedcom file of your family tree by going to your family site and clicking on Family Tree > Manage Tree and then the Export Gedcom link.
I went out on a tangent researching a family line and when I came back to where I started, it was asking me all new information about people I had already posted. Then I looked at the list and there were duplicates all over the place!!! How can I MERGE my entries so that they are not duplicated? I had this problem once years ago with a P.A.F. file on the Macintosh. Never got it fixed. Cathy
Well, I've tried search and looked through the first ten pages of this FAQ, but I can't find where someone has asked this question. As the webmaster, isn't there some way that I can view all the changes that someone else has made. I would like to be able to copy those changes to my master database. It seems like if someone else has only changed the details on a few individuals, I can see that in the What's New section on the home page. But if they have changed the details on a larger number of individuals, then I only see something like "Leif Kåre Eikeland updated the details of 8 people people in family tree: NEWEXPORT," and there's nothing to click on that will show me what details were updated.
My Father and Mother are cousins, so My two grand fathers are brothers. I would like to ask about, how could I able to manage this relation on my family tree. In other word, I would like to set two entries in the same level to be brothers.
If I'm not wrong, it's not possible through the web application. However, it is possible while using the Family Tree Builder application (you need to download and install it first - it's free)
After you creae your tree on it you should be able to publish it to the web site.
I have the same issue at least twice in my family tree and I can't see any way to merge the duplicates or make the correction in FTB even if I deleted most of one branch. The only option I can see is to make a note in the duplicate entry and end that line, a brother in this case, and note it's a duplicate and go to I.D. xxx.
I have siblings that decended down and then ending up having an intra-familial marriage 3-4 generations down back to my grandmother and if that isn't bad enough I have at least one more instance. It's a mess!!!!!
If you, or anyone else knows how to do this I'd love to hear about it. I'm thinking of buying the Family Tree Maker from Ancestory who claim to be able to do this.
3) open this Family Tree with Family Tree Builder (FTB) and edit the marriage between this cousins/parents (no "add wife" but "Attach Wife" ), they need to be already under they parents (mom/dad)
4a) if you want the possibility to edit the family online then Export the new file into Gedcom format, go to your site -> Family Tree -> Import Gedcom
4b) you can upload directly with FTB but you cannot edit anymore online in this manner.
In FTB there is an option to Attach an existing person from the list. You need to Edit a person-->select Parents/Children-->Attach Parents/Child (look at the attached screen capture)
In such case, you should create each entry once and then attach it to the other relevant persons in your tree.
Greetings to all with ths issue of inter-marriages in your tree.
First, the attach child to parent option seems to have worked but I did have to delete a handful of individuals that were duplicates. These duplicates were used as a "see I.D. # for duplicate entry. Now the connections are correct. I just wonder how the printout of the tree will work. Since there is an option to join individuals this way it would really be nice to have a duplicate name check flag waring us we may be embarking up a duplicate tree.
Many thanks for your help/idea.
I do suggest that before starting this a back up of your tree be done first just in case.
Your current FAQ section on this message board is not a real FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). It's being used as a "general" messages board which is fine but doesn't address the need to have a real FAQ.
It's making your task and the users' experience harder since users are posting the same questions again and again.
Just by going over the first 50 posts in this board you can find so many duplicates...
When you'll have FAQ section a user will review it before he post a question. In addition, it will make it easier to you to answer question and just reference to a link in the FAQ section (Instead of answering the same answer again and again)
1. FAQ section should not be used by your members to post questions. There are other sections in the message board (e.g. FTB, SmartMatch, etc.) which can accept and address specific questions.
2. Rather, FAQ section should be created by you solely and should include questions & answers of most common problems faced by your members. Members would then use FAQ as a reference section -- much like an encyclopedia or dictionary -- to "look up" solutions to their questions or problems.
3. It will be good also to set-up something like an online "MyHeritage community" message board where members can pose questions for anyone to answer, share experiences or render advice. I've noticed that a number of members, on their own very kind initiative, do volunteer and respond to support questions online. This way, you will be relieved of having to address the repetitive "how-to" type of questions and focus instead on the more serious queries involving program bugs, file corruptions or future improvements or features to the system.
Hope you will take these suggestions in a positive light since it seems like there is a current problem with the responsiveness of your support.
I'm trying to find a solution to the error message I get when I want to publish my family tree and as the Overview suggested I came to the FAQ page first - it's like trying to find a needle in a hay stack!
