Maybe I'm not looking in the right places for answers, but is there any way to transfer names etc between my own trees?? I'd be surprised if such an obvious function wasn't available. Have several trees growing in order to build an accurate pedigree tree, and it would be nice to enter all info about someone just once, and transfer to the pedigree. Thanks for any answers. Ps, doing all of this on mobile, perhaps that's my problem??
Oops, well thanks for the reply. That seems like a pretty obvious feature, but apparently not. Hey, they already got 2 years of my money, guess I should have explored a bit more first. Ps, not seeing any difference whatsoever in any functions, etc since I paid. My loss.
It is only possible to merge two family tree projects using Family Tree Builder software. Nevertheless, we generally do not recommend merging large family trees, as duplicate information has to be deleted manually and inconsistencies within the family tree might occur.
If you're interested in this, I recommend to take a look at the following FAQ:
Thanks for the reply. I no longer bother with having a home computer, as the whole family has smartphones now and the added expense was a bit silly. I would not transfer entire trees at a time. I am looking to build an accurate pedigree for my kids. When I first started, I ignored everyone's brothers, sisters etc because I'm not really interested in them. But, as I went along I found that strategy to be a huge mistake, as far as accurately finding the next generation up. So, I paid the $$, and split the families up on different trees, getting everyone possible on them, and have one specifically for mothers and fathers straight up through. The point is, it would be nice to enter all pieces of information about someone on those trees, in order to hopefully help with accurate info about others, then transfer them to the pedigree instead of having to redo them again on that one. The fact that I can copy Joe Shmoe's relatives, who lives on the other side of the earth, but not someone from my own tree is beyond my level of thought.
A. To merge all trees into one tree (forest). The benefit of this will be simle support, no duplicates, single edit (if needed), all-in-one (all site members are working for one project), increased viability of the site, etc...
B. To express the need and to push MyHeritage development team to develop extended access and rights funcionality. The benefit of this would be securing the required privacy.
The big difference IMHO if you pay is access to smart matches and record matches. These have helped my research a lot, but I guess that depends on if someone else is researching your ancestors (or there will be no smart matches) and if there are relevant records.
I'd recommend you to use the web interface for that since those functions are a bit limited (or hard to reach/see) on mobile. (I use the mobile a lot, but I'm short-sighted :) )
Regarding your first question you could of course export one tree (or parts of it, but then I think you need to use FTB) and then import it as a new one. Or add it to an existing tree, in FTB. Until MH has a reasonable solution to handling duplicates I wouldn't recommend it (but they have hinted that they are working on it). But you can't AFAIK sync parts of trees.
It seems most of the work I did in MH last night disappeared when I synced with FTB today. I can still see the record matches I approved, but all the information I retrieved from them is gone (including people added).
I also did quite a bit of cleaning up in who lived where and when, all that is gone.
It wasn't that much, a little more than an hour's work I guess. I hope! I haven't checked everything I can remember that I've changed the last few days...
But it worries me. I normally don't use FTB that much, only when I want to do stuff that isn't possible or too complicated in the web interface. I need to be able to trust that a sync doesn't wipe out my work.
Is there someway I can restore the work I've done? How can I prevent this from happening again (except complaining about possible bugs and hope that something can be done about them?)
I have checked your account and you have two family trees on your family site.
- One with 6311 people
- Other with 2643 people
Please, make sure that the one you are looking online is the same you working with on the Family Tree Builder.
You can manage your projects on the Family Tree Builder like so:
1. Click on 'File' on the top menu bar
2. Click on the 'Manage projects...' option.
3. On the window that will open, you will see all the files/projects that you have on your Family Tree Builder.
In case one of them is duplicated or irrelevant, click on it and then click on the 'Delete' button on the right side of the window.
You can also manage the trees online, and for that, click here to learn how to do it.
In case you have been using or had Family Tree Builder in two computers - which is something that is not recommended -, and accidentally opened an older version of your project in one of them and synced to the site, you can try and go to the other computer where you have had the most updated tree and sync it again. Or look for a Backup created automatically by Family Tree Builder in your computer. The links below will explain more about the those aspects of the software:
I would still recommend that you manage any files/trees you might have on your Family Tree Builder. It seems to me that somehow you had in your computer an older version of a same tree and synced it, instead of the updated one.
1. Open the Family Tree Builder
2. Go to File > Manage Projects. There you will see a list of the trees that you have created in Family Tree Builder.
3. Click on the tree you want to delete.
4. Click on 'Done' to finish.
And then, also try and find on that same 'Manage projects...' option, if you have the tree that is more updated.
It happened once to me when I forgot to save the changes I made in some notes and vital info. I always save FTB BEFORE I allow it to sync with the on-line program. When I am notified the sync was successful, I double-check to make sure and then save FTB again.
Somewhere in the data structure, 2 master files managed to be created. I would like to delete one, which is no problem. However, I would like to rename the existing master file. Is this possible? If so how?
