My own personal feeling for this question is I prefer to do all edits myself and publish.
If you want to make a tree editable for people to do work on create another tree where they can add info, ie a tree for a sibling to add nieces and nephews, info that you may not find in a search, then you can look at it and take any info to the main tree.
Hi Colin (and others),
I like your idea of keeping 2 copies (one read-only and one updateable).
If it was integrated with a compare function of two trees that could be a base for an approvement strategy.
You have expressed my fears very well. All it takes is someone with anger motives, to destroy the entire enterprise (never mind backups). And of course, we have the worry about accidental, or a computer novice who does not know how to undo a mistake and end up causing irreparable damage.
I’d think that “myheritage” site programmers would create an “approve” “reject” button and that would solve all the problems. It requires some planning the logistics, to allow the member to see his proposed changes, without affecting the actual site view, and then implementing the changes upon approval.
If “management” keeps a “wish list” – this is one.
If a birthday announcement doesn't appear in your calendar alerts, please check to make sure the date in the family tree is correct.
If you use Family Tree Builder to build your family tree, republish the tree to your family site to update the changes.
Also, log in to your family site and click on Settings > Calendar. Remove the check from the box labeled "import events from the family tree". Click Save.
Then add the check to the box to re-import events. The event should now appear.
Valitse Tallenna.
Lisää sitten sekin valinta uudelleen tuoda tapahtumia.
1. Pomocou programu Family Tree Builder (FTB), ktorý si stiahnete zo stránky http://www.myheritage.sk/family-tree-builder do vlastného PC. Rodokmeň si tak tvoríte vo vlastnom počítači a potom ho zverejníte na svoju rodinnú stránku.
I have checked all the settings to let my members add to my site but they told me there is no way they can add anything. Now is there a reason why they can not add to my site do I need to do anything else?
I see that you are managing 4 different family sites. Is this problem happening in all your family sites or in just one and if so, on which family site is this happening?
Can you elaborate as to what the site members are trying to do and what is happening on the site? Are they trying to make changes in the tree, add photos or anything else? Are they getting an error message and if so what is it?
Is this sort of thing happen to all your site members or to only a few ones?
I need to get more information before coming to decision as to the nature of the problem.
One thing that I did notice is that in 3 of your 4 sites you have a family tree that was created in the Family Tree Builder software. It is improtant to note that such trees cannot be edited online and maybe this is what the site members are trying to do.
The following article explains why Family Tree Builder trees cannot be edited online:
Yes, I do use Family Tree Builder software, so there is no way to have anyone update the Family Tree but me because I use the Software?
I noticed that in the Settings under Privacy, then under Member, there is no way I can put a check mark next to "Family Tree" All Pages, then Post Content, it is greyed out. Is there a way to be able to check that?
I also saw the following on this same page.
Tip! Successful sites encourage members to participate and post content.
You (or other Site managers) can always edit or delete all content posted by anyone on your site.
Now is there a way if I make a person a site manager for awhile would there be a way to do that?
I hope this helps. I was just hoping my family could go in an add things to the tree if possible?
At the moment, family trees which were created using the Family Tree Builder software can only be modified by the person who started the tree and only from within the software.
The reason for this limitation is technical and we are working on a solution that will allow multi-user editing of such trees, but it will take some time before this capability is available.
Note that your other site members can still add content to the site (add events, photos, news articles, etc..), but they cannot make changes to the family tree.
The reason you cannot select the "post content" checkbox next to "Family tree" is the one specific above. Family Tree Builder trees cannot be modified online at the moment. This means that even if you promote some of your site members to become Webmasters, they would still not be able to modify the tree. Like I said, modification of the tree is only possible from within the Family Tree Builder software.
As soon as multi-user editing of Family Tree Builder trees will be available, we will be sure to notify all of our users.
