I have found details of the marriage of George Clarke and Anne Jane Russell in 1870

again thanks to the Donegal Genaology resources website, maybe a problem with the transcription of the original as Groom and Father seem tom be confused this take s me back a generation to a Charles Clarke Georges father no details on him so far, link below

got in touch with creator of above documant who very kindly sent me copys of the original register of marriage and also original 1901 census return, alas this does not help as both documents where transcribed correctly, pics in photo section

Looking in more detail at the Griffiths land valuation it appears that George was a Tenant farmer his landlord being a Mr Humpreys. I will have to research this further.

This takes the family back another generation to 1841, although not mentioned in the census William had a younger brother and sister living away from home in 1901.

Another thing to note is the address has changed from #3 Roughin to #4 in the 10 years between the 1901 and 1911 census; another house must have been built between #2 and #3!

Griffiths Valuation 1857

George Clarke appears on this document as a landowner along with 3 other Clarke’s all living in the town land of Roughin which itself is only 138 acres, this leads me to believe that the 4 mentioned Clarke’s may well be brothers and the land was divided up on the death of their father who may have owned a more substantial farm. Of course this is just speculation I have no evidence to support this theory at this time but will keep looking. Link to valuation below. Also link to original griffiths ledger entry!
