SINGULAR AND FATAL ACCIDENT.—On Friday last, a girl, nine years of age, daughter to William M’Corkell, of Middletown, Ballyratten, near Moville [Co Donegal], was gathering weeds as fodder for a cow. The child placed them in a creel, a custom common in the country, and had secured it by a strap across her shoulders. Having rested her burthen on a ditch, the creel, by some mischance, became overbalanced, and, the cord tightening round the neck of the little girl, she was unfortunately strangled. Strange to say, her father was not, at the time, more than two perches distant, and yet was ignorant of the fate of his daughter until apprised of it by a neighbour, who passed by shortly afterwards.—Northern Whig.
Probably Margaret McCorkell (b.1834) , 2 Perches is about 30 feet
An Aghey McCorkey appears in the article below because of its age a mispelling is likely and two lls may well look like a y to the transcriber as I cannot see the original document i can't be sure
Still I'll keep the dream alive a sword carrying Yeoman defending king and Country in the reign of Charles I
I have found details of the marriage of George Clarke and Anne Jane Russell in 1870
again thanks to the Donegal Genaology resources website, maybe a problem with the transcription of the original as Groom and Father seem tom be confused this take s me back a generation to a Charles Clarke Georges father no details on him so far, link below
got in touch with creator of above documant who very kindly sent me copys of the original register of marriage and also original 1901 census return, alas this does not help as both documents where transcribed correctly, pics in photo section
Tithe records from 1838, one Clarke mentioned a samuel clarke He was a landowner or tenant as he was paying the Tithe tax (Tax payed by all for upkeep of the Church of Ireland ) link to document below
Also from the same site a newspaper clipping from the Londonderry Sentinel dated 1st April 1841 (hope no significance to this date LOL) marks the death of a Samuel Clarke at the age of 82, more doubtful if this is the same samuel Clarke this man worked for the Customs Department but could in theory be his father.
This would take the line back to 1759!! Would be nice if this was the case need more evidence though.
Looking in more detail at the Griffiths land valuation it appears that George was a Tenant farmer his landlord being a Mr Humpreys. I will have to research this further.
This takes the family back another generation to 1841, although not mentioned in the census William had a younger brother and sister living away from home in 1901.
Another thing to note is the address has changed from #3 Roughin to #4 in the 10 years between the 1901 and 1911 census; another house must have been built between #2 and #3!
The family comes under the parish of Conwal, additional information on the Parish can be found in the above very impressive website.
Griffiths Valuation 1857
George Clarke appears on this document as a landowner along with 3 other Clarke’s all living in the town land of Roughin which itself is only 138 acres, this leads me to believe that the 4 mentioned Clarke’s may well be brothers and the land was divided up on the death of their father who may have owned a more substantial farm. Of course this is just speculation I have no evidence to support this theory at this time but will keep looking. Link to valuation below. Also link to original griffiths ledger entry!
