Elizabeth McArdle 1922 - 2011 ELIZABETH McArdle, 132, Ard Easmuinn, Dundalk who died peacefully at her home on October 7 th after a relatively short illness was, with her late husband, Francie the pillar on which one of the most successful family businesses in this area was built. Aged 89, Elizabeth, or Bella as she was known, was one of seven children of the late PJ and Jane Duffy from Milltown, Kilkerley. Like so many of her generation she left school on completion of her primary education at Kilkerley N. S. and went to work in domestic service with Lady Harty in Belrobin, Kilkerley at the age of 14. Married in 1942 to Francis McArdle from Courtbane the couple opened their first business on Castletown Road in 1955. Francis had worked for his uncle in the poultry business and two years after opening their first fish, poultry and egg business on the Castletown Road, the couple acquired a prominent premises in Park Street that became the corner stone on which the family's many successful business ventures were built. Those premises at the corner of Williamsons Place had originally been the district office of the Belfast Telegraph and later a green grocers owned by the Hanratty family. Over the 30 years that Bella worked in the Park Street shop she helped build a thriving business which, at its peak was supplying 3,000 turkeys each Christmas to householders in the area. The poultry was sourced by Francis, and Bella provided the service as well as looking after the back office demands, such as the accounts. A second shop was opened in Drogheda in 1968, and out of the Park Street premises the family opened the town's first Jumbo Bin service, with Bella providing the accountancy expertise needed to launch the business. Before retiring from the business in 1984, Bella took great pride in seeing her sons build highly regarded businesses of their own such as McArdle Meats, now a household name in Dundalk started by Frank, but no longer owned by the family, 'Height for Hire' a plant hire firm started in Drogheda by son, Harry which has been extended to many parts of Europe and the Middle East and an accountancy firm in which Fergus is a principal. After retiring Bella shared in a passion that her husband enjoyed, fishing and became so accomplished with the rod and fly that she won a trophy with the Salmon Anglers. A number of Bella's brothers, Brian and Pat who ran a number of successful shops, and Sean who was a builder, shared the business acumen and dedication to hard work which Bella always maintained was the vital ingredient needed for any successful venture. Bella's family acknowledge the inspiration that she was in their lives, and recognise the sacrifices that had to be made not just in building up their businesses, but in looking after the needs of eight children. She will be remembered by many as remarkable woman who through her dedication and enterprise made a major impact on the business life of her native town. Bella has great devotion to the Holy Rosary and died on the feast of the Holy Rosary. In latter years she lived contentedly in Ard Easmuinn and fortunately enjoyed relatively good health until recently. Her death, even at an advanced age will be deeply mourned, but she had left a legacy that will endure. Bella is survived ber her sons, Harry ( Termonfeckin), Frank (Dundalk), Fergus (Dundalk), daughters, Mary Fee (Hackballscross), Isabella Winters (Sandpit), brothers, Peadar (Milltown, Kilkerley) and Jim (England), 26 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Francie who died in 1994, sons, Paddy and Brian, daughter, Bridget who died in infancy, brothers, Brian and Sean and sister, Briege Muckian. Having reposed at her home, Bella's remains were taken to Church of the Holy Redeemer where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Paul Montague, C.C., who delivered the eulogy. After Mass burial took place in Shelagh cemetery and there was a large turnout at both the Mass and interment reflecting the deep regard by which Bella and her family are held. Month's Mind Mass will be held on November 6th in Sacred Heart Church, Shelagh at 11am.

She was the wife of the late John Harry McArdle, who died in January 1991, and was also predeceased by her son Harry on January 9th of this year and by her grandaughter Deirdre Lynch. Aged 83 years, she was the former Miss Cissie Agnew and the last of her family generation. Of farming background, and had lived all her life in the family home where she was born. She managed with her late husband their dairy farm and cattle and on his death managed both herself. In her earlier years she was a member of the I.C.A., and a feature of her busy though wholesome life was her generous hospitality that was extended to everyone, her door always open and a failte for all. A devoted housewife and mother Cissie was a tremendous worker who saw good in everyone. A highly organised and disciplined woman, she was widely known and highly popular, greatly respected for her integrity and unvarnished honesty, and had the distinction of being among the first to have a telephone as well as a T.V. in the area. Profoundly spiritual and a practical Christian, Cissie was a cheerful and very friendly woman though completely unobtrusive and loved music and joining in a sing-song. She led a simple life with simple tastes, loved farming, the countryside and every aspect of rural life. At the centre of her very busy and energetic life was her family and home in both of which she took tremendous pride. Cissie’s absence in the area where she spent her entire life will be monumental but while sadly missed, her family and many friends have recourse to the many happy memories she has bequeathed to them. After reposing at her home, her remains were received in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Sheelagh on Saturday May 1st, and Mass was celebrated at 11a.m. by Fr. Peter Clarke C.C. The Eulogy was delivered by Fr. Clarke. The Lessons were read by daughter Anne and grandson Thomas McMahon, and the Intercessions by sons Philip and Felix, daughter Eileen, grandson John Joe McArdle and grandaughter Bernadette McArdle. The music was by the local choir with organist Margaret Finnegan, and presentation of the Offertory Gifts was by son James and daughter Patricia. The Funeral, with the coffin draped in the tricolour took place to the adjoining Cemetery. Fr. Clarke led the large and representative attendance in the prayers at the graveside. Cissie is survived by her sons, James (home), John (home), Philip (Newry) and Felix (home), daughters Mary Reilly (Rathmore), Ann Smart (Kent, England), Rose McMahon (Carrickmacross), Eileen Lynch (Courtbane) and Patricia Quigley (Courtbane), 27 grandchildren, 7 greatgrandchildren, sister-in-law Rose McDonald (Bessbrook), sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, extended family members, relatives and friends. • The Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Sacred Heart on Friday evening May 28th at 8 p.m.

on Sep 22 2011 14:05 | August, 1971 ONE of the most talked about incidents of the Northern troubles that spilled into Louth took place on the first Sunday of September, 1971 and which was given a notorious label ' The Battle of Courtbane' by the media. During the incident a British soldier lost his life following which there was a major dispute between the British and Irish Government over the slow response from the Gardai and the Irish Army to the incident, and an even bigger issue of contention was the claim by the British that the fatal shots were fired from the Republic side of the Border. In addition the British Army lost a Ferret Scout car which was looted and burned by a crowd that had trapped the scout car south of the Border. It was approaching lunch time on the Sunday when two British Army Ferret Scout cars based in Crossmaglen approached the Border at Courtbane. They drove across the Border and travelled for about a mile almost to Shelagh school. Local people were alerted and when the two scout cars turned round to travel back across the Border they were surrounded by about 150 local people. The locals used materials, including cement blocks which the British had brought to the area in a failed attempt to close the road, to block the route back across the Border. The local people were incensed at the constant unauthorised crossings by the British Army, and were determined to take a stand. Having trapped the two scout cars the four soldiers occupying the vehicles left them and walked across the Border, one of the scout cars was attacked, the ammunition taken and the car set on fire. Two soldiers succeeded in returning to the area and driving the other car across the Border. However, an IRA unit became involved, and there was an exchange of gunfire between the IRA and the British Army. The British claimed that the shots that killed a soldier were fired from the Republic side of the Border, but local people and a subsequent Garda investigation concluded that all the gunfire took place north of the Border. A second solider was injured in the exchange of fire and it was also claimed that an IRA man was injured. The Gardai and the Irish Army arrived on the scene, but the British Government protested to the Irish Government that there was an unacceptable delay in the Irish security forces arriving. Taoiseach, Jack Lynch met British Prime Minister, Edward Heath days after the incident and at the meeting the British vented their anger at the incident. But the Irish for their part complained at the constant unauthorised crossings by the British Army into the south and the fears this brought to local people.
