On December 23rd, 1940, Mickey, as his family called him, was born to Lawrence and Agnes Crenshaw in Long Jack, Missouri. The oldest of ten children, Mickey spent his youth in Missouri before moving to Alderpoint with his family in 1954. His father worked in the sawmills and Mickey hunted to help feed his family. At the tender age of 16, Mickey went to work in the Alderpoint sawmill as a "pond monkey", pushing the logs to the slip to be processed.
That same year he met and began dating Rosealee Loghry. They dated for two years before marrying in Alderpoint in 1960. Over the next seven years, they lived in the Humboldt County area while raising their first five children, moving from Alderpoint to Blue Lake and then on to McKinleyville before moving back to Missouri to be with the rest of his family. In 1969 the family moved back to the Alderpoint area, where Mickey resided for the next forty years.
