In or around 1820 Shaka Zulu was attacking all neighbouring tribes to incoporate them to the Zulu. He then attacked Dunjwa ka Khali ka Mbatha who was a Chief at Oyengweni and Zwide of ama Ndwandwe. Mehlomakhulu ka Dunjwa and other people in his tribe didnt want to be Shaka's subjects so they decided to join Chief Ngoza of aba Thembu a sworn enemy of Shaka in the trek to the South. Together with some sections of amaNxamalala, ama Khuze, Mabaso, amaMBATHA settled at uMngeni valley near today's Petermaritzburg.
The Dunjwa and aba Thembu settled in today's Eastern Cape. Noma isizukulwane sika Dunjwa singa phindanga sa qhubeka ngo sebenzisa u Mbatha kodwa siphuma endlini eyodwa, sihlobene Bafo ka Dunjwa. Abase Koloni badabuka ku Mehlomakhulu ka Dunjwa ka Mangcengeza ka Khali Mbatha.
