Obituaries:IN TRIBUTE TO LUANNE ROGERS BY HER LONG-TIME FRIEND Pat Kuhi
Posted by: Melinda Rogers on Sep 22 2008 11:23
I first met Luanne when she joined the (then) Berkeley League in the late 1970s. She was working for Council Member John Denton at the time and became the chair of our Education Committee. With her warm and positive personality, hugs and table-full of treats, she energized the committee and it became the monthly meeting not-to- miss for us”School Board Junkies’ As a founder of the Berkeley Citizens Action (BCA), Luanne brought the progressive perspective to the Berkeley League.

I remember years of evening unit meetings at Barbara Nelson’s where Luanne’s delightful humorous guidance as Discussion Leader led us though the thorny topics of National, State and local League Studies. Over 100 guests attended the 50th wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Ercell Richman of Troy, Oregon, on June 10, 1978 at the Wallowa Christian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zielke of Hermiston and Mr. and Mrs. Don Scott of Wallowa hosted the reception.
The dining room was decorated with flowers and lace cloths. A gold card tree, a gift made by brother-in-law Alex Dawson of Portland, stood with flowers near the entry.
The serving table was covered in gold with white lace. Gold candles in bowls of white and gold flowers flanked the 3-tiered cake, baked and decorated by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Neyman of Hermiston. A gold pompon of net topped the crystal goblet on the top layer, and long streamers of gold satin ribbon draped to the table. Lemonade punch, coffee, nuts and gold and white flower mints were served with the cake. Many friends and relatives shared in serving and the afternoon was spent in renewing acquaintances.
