This book (Now Welcome Summer, written by Father Francis Herlihy A Roman Catholic Priest) was given to Francis O'Dea on his 2nd birthday on the 25 May 1947 by his Godmother Sister Mary Winifred Quirke, a Roman Catholic Nun. Father Francis Herlihy was a close friend to the O'Dea / Quirke family.
In Oct 2012 I (Robbie Quirke) got an E-Maill from a Mr Malcom Swan in Auckland who brought a book from a second hand book store. When he opened it up he saw the writing and done a bit of investagation work. I emailed him back to say yes he is a Relation and he has a brother Terrence O'Dea who just lives down the road from me. I rung Terrence and got hold of his wife Moira and gave her all the infomation. She rung Malcom and while talking she said to Malcom thats funny we have a Malcom Swan working at my job and he said where do you work, and Maoria told him, sure enough they worked for the same company.

At the Anzac Day gathering in Rotorua in 2011 it was decided that there should be a family account opened. The reason for this was attempt to accumulate some funds to cover costs for future family gatherings, koha for breavements, reinbursment of monies spent by family members on family treasures etc eg. Robert has paid for the restoration of the Family Bible which cost around $2000.00. There is the Grave Restoration which could amount to $1500 ?????This account has been opened and there are three trustees to this account; myself , Brendan Quirke & Susie Hall. All three signatures are required before withdrawals can be made. The account is called M & M Family Account (M&M for Michael & Mary Anne) and is a Westpac account number 03-0774-0644651-00. Any contributions, no matter how small would be appreciated. For example I have started a monthly auto payment of $25.00 .
Background As you may or may not be aware our Great Grand Parents are buried in the Pahiatua (Mangatainoka) Cemetery but they have never had a headstone. In the same plot is also our Great Uncle who has a headstone although in need of restoration. For a couple of years now there has been discussion over what should be done over this situation. Cousin Robert has completed a lot of work toward remedying this situation and has a new headstone plate made for our Great Grand Parents. This plate is now in my possession and was to be installed at the same time as our Great Uncles headstone restoration. Along the way there has been a number of discussions and suggestions over whether the Police or the Police Association should be involved in this task. This is as a result of our Great Grand Father being one of the originals to join the NZ Police when it was formed and the fact that our Great Uncle Michael (buried in the same plot) was accidentally shot by another volunteer during the Police manhunt for Joseph Pawelka in 1910. The condition of the plot is as per this link;
Over the past year there has been developing discussions ongoing with members from both NZ Police and the Police Association and this has recently become far more formal.
The Latest Both organisations have indicated that they wish to become involved in this entire process, At this point the Deputy Commisioner of Police Viv Rickard has tasked the Central District to take this up as a project with a view to it being completed by 29 Sep 12, which is also the Patron Saints Day for the NZ Police and Police Remembrance Day for all those that have died whilst serving . It is the date they have indicated to re-dedicate the plot including the restoration and installation of the new plate. They also intend to recognise the decades of Police Service of our family since Gt Grand Father Michael. I intend at this stage to have a meeting with representatives of both organisations as soon as possible being mindful that our family would not want a complete takeover.
I don't have everybody's contact details so I would ask that you pass this on to all descendants of Michael and Mary Anne Quirke.
I would like some feedback on this and ask whether the current plans as briefly outlined are suitable and whether you are happy for me to continue the liaison role between the family and the Police? For those that don't know I currently work for the Police. Please direct any feed back to me directly. I will assume that no replies or comments will mean I can continue with these plans. Any comment would need to be back to me by 14 February 2012. My email address is terryandsuzyq@paradise.net.nz
