ROBERT EDWARD QUIRKE commented on the photo Kathleen Monica Hughes (Quirke) Correct position of Headstone:
This is the correct position of Kathleen Monica Hughes (Quirke) Headstone. The Headstone is now in the right position, to the Right of her Grandparents Michael Joseph and Mary Anne Quirke (Fitzgerald) Headstone as you face the headstones. Kathleen's Ashes are buried on top of her Grandmothers Grave on Plot 46, Mangatainoka Cemetery, Paihiatua. The photos of her Headstone below positioned to the left of her Grandparents Headstone as you face it are wrong.

ROBERT EDWARD QUIRKE commented on the photo James Edward Quirke Grave Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma City, San Mateo, California, USA:
On James Edward Quirke Headstone it shows Date of Death 28 February 1948. On the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery Records it shows 2 March 1948. I presume James Date of Death was 28 February 1948 and the Cemetery Records, record, Date of Burial as 2 March 1948.

ROBERT EDWARD QUIRKE commented on the photo Medal trial:
This guy here, Owen James Gough (A medal dealer) has ripped of many peoples medals. People would send their medals for mounting and he would send back replica's and sell the real medals. He done a Uncles Medals (George Palmer Cade, Husband of Ruth Madeline Cade (Quirke) ), who won a D.S.O in WW2. George Palmer Cade's Grandson, Paul Manion went on Fair Go last year. Another Medal in Auckland was with Paul on Fair Go and got a set of medals made up for Paul and his side of the family. I also gave Paul a replica set of his Great Grandfathers Medals (Gerald Joseph Quirke) fm WW1. Paul Manions cousin Keith Quirke in Upper Hutt has Gerald's real medals and is looking after them.

Announcements:Family Bank Account Opened
Posted by: TERENCE JOHN QUIRKE on Mar 21 2012 11:36
At the Anzac Day gathering in Rotorua in 2011 it was decided that there should be a family account opened. The reason for this was attempt to accumulate some funds to cover costs for future family gatherings, koha for breavements, reinbursment of monies spent by family members on family treasures etc eg. Robert has paid for the restoration of the Family Bible which cost around $2000.00. There is the Grave Restoration which could amount to $1500 ?????This account has been opened and there are three trustees to this account; myself , Brendan Quirke & Susie Hall. All three signatures are required before withdrawals can be made. The account is called M & M Family Account (M&M for Michael & Mary Anne) and is a Westpac account number 03-0774-0644651-00. Any contributions, no matter how small would be appreciated. For example I have started a monthly auto payment of $25.00 .

Important:Restoration & Re-dedication of Great Grand Parents & Great Uncles Grave Site
Posted by: TERENCE JOHN QUIRKE on Jan 10 2012 15:55
Greetings to you all,

Background
As you may or may not be aware our Great Grand Parents are buried in the Pahiatua (Mangatainoka) Cemetery but they have never had a headstone. In the same plot is also our Great Uncle who has a headstone although in need of restoration. For a couple of years now there has been discussion over what should be done over this situation. Cousin Robert has completed a lot of work toward remedying this situation and has a new headstone plate made for our Great Grand Parents. This plate is now in my possession and was to be installed at the same time as our Great Uncles headstone restoration. Along the way there has been a number of discussions and suggestions over whether the Police or the Police Association should be involved in this task. This is as a result of our Great Grand Father being one of the originals to join the NZ Police when it was formed and the fact that our Great Uncle Michael (buried in the same plot) was accidentally shot by another volunteer during the Police manhunt for Joseph Pawelka in 1910. The condition of the plot is as per this link;

http://www.tararuadc.govt.nz/asp/cemetery_details.asp?ID=34&PlotID=5693

Over the past year there has been developing discussions ongoing with members from both NZ Police and the Police Association and this has recently become far more formal.

The Latest
Both organisations have indicated that they wish to become involved in this entire process, At this point the Deputy Commisioner of Police Viv Rickard has tasked the Central District to take this up as a project with a view to it being completed by 29 Sep 12, which is also the Patron Saints Day for the NZ Police and Police Remembrance Day for all those that have died whilst serving . It is the date they have indicated to re-dedicate the plot including the restoration and installation of the new plate. They also intend to recognise the decades of Police Service of our family since Gt Grand Father Michael. I intend at this stage to have a meeting with representatives of both organisations as soon as possible being mindful that our family would not want a complete takeover.

I don't have everybody's contact details so I would ask that you pass this on to all descendants of Michael and Mary Anne Quirke.

I would like some feedback on this and ask whether the current plans as briefly outlined are suitable and whether you are happy for me to continue the liaison role between the family and the Police? For those that don't know I currently work for the Police. Please direct any feed back to me directly. I will assume that no replies or comments will mean I can continue with these plans. Any comment would need to be back to me by 14 February 2012. My email address is terryandsuzyq@paradise.net.nz

Cheers

Terry
