Otto had an older brother "Hal" who died when he was 20 years old in about 1941. Hal's best friends, Clifford Lamont and Ian Campbell remained Otto's friends all his life.
Otto became a Civil Engineer and worked for Johannesburg Municipality from 1953. After he retired he contracted to Johannesburg Water and later became Chairman of Civilian Blind.
