My name is Maureen Kenchington and I started this site.
This One Name Study grew out of my general researches into my own Family Tree. Waycott was my maiden name, and a name familiar to me generally in Devonshire where I grew up. It wasn't until I started tracing the lines back that I realised how special the name was in terms of geography.
The Waycott One Name Study is registered with the Guild of One Name Studies and the Homepage can be seen here: <http://www.one-name.org/profiles/waycott.html> The Guild defines a One-Name Study as: Research into the genealogy and family history of all persons with the same surname and its variants.
This is distinct from family history, in that it is the surname that is of interest, rather than the family tree of members of the same family with several different surnames. However, it does involve many of the same research skills and techniques as family history. As I researched my own family tree I was drawn deeper into the history and spread of this one name in particular, partly because it turned out to be unique to the beautiful county of Devon in the far southwest of England.
The Waycotts recorded here, along with their spouses and children, represent several different family trees. I have excluded anyone born after 1910, and no notes or sources are shown. I do however have much fuller information on the different ancestral lines which I will happily share with anyone who contacts me.
I hope anyone with Waycott ancestors, browsing the family trees on this website, will be encouraged to learn more about their daily lives and the beautiful part of the world where they lived, and also to share their own knowledge which may lead to further breakthroughs in creating and linking family trees.
