 James Grant Obituary
Transcription from "Australian Hardware and Machinery" March 1 1916, page 72.
“Death of an Aged Implement Maker
-Mr. James Grant, who died at his residence 568 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne on February 5, had reached the advanced age of 88 years. As a young man of 25 he came to Melbourne, and two years later began business at Richmond as a maker of agricultural implements. Not long afterwards he moved to Elizabeth Street where he carried on business ever since, more latterly in partnership with his son, the firm name being James Grant & Co. The late Mr. Grant was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Agricultural Show, occupying space there year after year from the foundation of the society in 1870. He claimed to have made the first iron plough produced in Victoria. The business is continued by his son under the old firm name.”

Mr. R. J. Matheson's Death. –
Mr. Donald MacLennan, of Mumbannar, writing to us on the death of his cousin Mr. Rd. J. Matheson, in the Red Sea, on the 9th inst, as recorded in the "Watch" of last Wednesday, says
"His father was well known in Mount Gambier in the Sixties. In the early Sixties he was managing Port Gawler, now known as Buckland Park. In the latter Sixties he took up some land in Yahl Paddock. In 1870 he went over the border into Victoria, and took up land on Woodford, near Dartmoor. After three years there his health gave way, and Dr. Jackson ordered him to Adelaide. His sons, Messrs. Simon, Kenneth, and Rod, took up pastoral pursuits. The latter purchased Nilpeena and Wilpuna stations. He afterwards sold the former and bought Leigh's Creek, on the Myrtle Springs, together with his brothers. He also had an interest in Wilgena with his brother, Mr. Simon. During the racing season he was successful with his Wallace mare, Kirn, both in Melbourne and Adelaide. She is now considered to be the best mare in South Australia. He leaves a wife, and four of a family to mourn their loss."

 PERSONAL.
The Mail (Adelaide, SA) Saturday 19 April 1913 Section: SECOND SECTION p 6 Article
There were many sad hearts in Adelaide last Monday, when it became known that Mr. R. J. Matheson had died on his way to England. The late Mr. Rod Matte eon was one of the best-liked men in the city — a man of whom it could be truly said that he had not a single enemy. He was full of the milk of human kindness, and was never happier than when he was giving pleasure to others. At the time of his death he owned Nilpena and Myrtle Springs Stations in the north. He had been looking forward for a long time to the trip to the old country with his wife and two daughters, and the holiday was thoroughly deserved, after the hard work of earlier years in the north. Mr. Matheson had become prominent, in the racing world, particularly through the medium of his fine mare, Kirn, which he purchased as a yearling, and with which he won several good races.

BURIED AT SEA. DEATH OF MR. R. J. MATHESON.
The Register (Adelaide, SA) Tuesday 15 April 1913 p 7 Article
... BURIED AT SEA. DEATH OF MR. R. J. MATHESON.
Quite a gloom was cast over Adelaide on Monday by the unexpected news of Mr. R. J. Matheson's death, while on his first voyage to England. The intelligence rapidly spread to the Stock Exchange, and the various racing and sporting clubs, where he was well known and loved for his genuine qualities and wholeheartedness. Mr. A. S. Cheadle, Mr. Matheson's attorney, was the first to receive the news by cablegram from Mrs. Matheson at Suez. The message stated that the sad event occurred on Wednesday last, after an illness of five days, and that he was buried at sea. The late Mr. Matheson left for England by the mail steamer Otranto, on March 21, accompanied by Ms Matheson and their two daughters and Miss Mary Cheadle, and it was their intention to spend some time in the motherland. Prior to his departure Mr. Matheson had been suffering for a considerable period from a painful affection of the ear, and it is considered that this may have hastened his untimely end.
He was a comparatively young man, having been born at Buckland Park 51 years ago, and he was educated partly there, at Mount Gambier, and at Two Wells. He went with his brother Kenneth in 1882 to Port Darwin, in behalf of the late Dr. Browne, and remained there on a cattle run for three and a half years. At this time his brother, Mr. Simon Matheson, was managing Buckland Park for the same owner, and on the return of deceased to Adelaide Dr. Browne gave him the management of Nilpena and Arkaba Station. With Mr. John Lewis the late Mr. Matheson subsequently bought Nilpena Station, and at a later date also purchased his partner's share. He then got possession of Myrtle Springs and Leigh's Creek stations, which were previously managed by his brother Kenneth, but the latter was disposed of last year.
Mr. Matheson was one of the staunchest supporters of the Port Augusta and Flinders Racing Club during his residence in the north, and on many occasions gave special contributions to the club’s funds in the shape of stakes. He also made every effort to be represented by horses at the meetings. A few years ago he came to live at Glenelg, so that he might enjoy the remainder of his life, after his many years' residence, in the bush, and educate his children. With the time at his disposal he was able to satisfy his sporting in inclinations, and he had several horses in training, the most conspicuous of which were Kirn and the steeplechaser Sufferer. He purchased Kirn as a yearling, and the Wallace mare won him many races. She finished third in the last Newmarket Handicap, occupied a similar position in the Bourke Handicap, and afterwards won the St. Kilda Cup. Twelve months ago Kirn carried Mr. Matheson's colours to victory in the Port Adelaide Cup, and to show his appreciation of the performance, that sportsman added a 100-guinea trophy to the last Port Adelaide Cup.
Apart from races Mr. Matheson was also keen with a gun, but showed to better advantage in the field than he did at the pigeon traps. He also owned the motor launch Woolerina, one of the best pleasure boats in the State, and was an enthusiastic motorist. In addition to Mrs. Matheson and the two daughters who were with him at the time of his death, he has left two sons, who are being educated at St. Peter's College.
