Sad loss for industry: REO RUITERS

Reo Ruiters was born in Holland on 13 February 1938 and came to South Africa as a child of 10. He was known as the “Granddaddy” of stuntmen and dedicated much of his time to training. After a long illness, he suffered renal failure and died on 7 September at the Flora Clinic in Johannesburg.

Peter Smook of Atlanta in the United States wrote the following tribute:

“Reo will be missed by many people here in America, including Sharon Stone (King Soloman's Mines) and Paulette Pierotti, Sharon Stone's business partner.

“I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Reo on many productions
in South Africa. His death is a sad loss to the industry. Reo was highly respected in Russia as he was invited to judge the Promethius Stunt Festival in Moscow on five different occasions.

“He leaves his wonderful wife Sandra behind as well as hundreds of

friends and well wishers.”

Posted by: Carla Maritz on Apr 12 2012 00:54

Hi all the site is back up for me to edit and figure out ... its not an easy task doing this (somehow I have doubles of some people etc ... (?!) trying to sort it all out ) but its the one site I'm doing in memory of my wonderful mom (and all her research) and Im so glad I could finally pay again (I have 2 years subscription )

Hopefully in the future one of my children or whoever else is interested can take over the reigns and keep this going .

Please if you see things that need to be edited or changed please send me the details and I will try do as soon as possible. Laughing

This Web site:Site cut down by owners
Posted by: Carla Maritz on Feb 8 2010 08:13

as now there is a subscription fee payable ...

US$120,00 (slechts US$5,00 per maand) for 5 years is one of the options to upgrade this site and get all info back .(50 % of people on the tree are gone now)

What they dont realize is how much hard work went into this site and years of study by my late mom - then they take it all away and charge now - especially as I am from RSA the rand is much weaker than US dollar .

Sad to see this happen here

This also for those who joined from other sites here and with whom Im connected . Sorry about that as i notice we all trying to figure out the connections again

Thanks Carla xoxoxox

Family stories:Muiden Castle ?
Posted by: Carla Maritz on June 15 2009 03:04

Hi all - when we went to Holland when I was about 16 my mother said we were somehow connected to this castle - Can anyone help figure out the connection to the Schothorst family ?

Muiden Castle was built around 1280 by Count Floris V of Holland, to control the estuary of the river Vecht into the former Zuidersea. In 1296 Count Floris was taken prisoner and held captive within his own castle.

During attempts to rescue him, his captors fled towards Utrecht, taking the count with them. At some point during this dash for safety the Count was murdered.

There was no immediate successor to take over the castle in the counts name as his son was in England at the time. The bishop of Utrecht, Willem van Mechlen, took this opportunity to gain control of Muiden Castle. Once he had control, the bishop then went about destroying the very castle he seized.

The castle was rebuilt on the foundations of the previous one in 1370 by Duke Albrecht, Count of Holland. The castle was square in shape with four round corner towers. The castle was never used as a residence but as a court and state prison. It was only ever lived in by bailiffs.

P.C. Hoot, a well known Dutch writer, poet and historian lived in the castle between 1609 and 1647, entertaining a host of famous Dutch writers, artists and scholars during this time. They later went on to be known as the Muider Circle, after the castle.

Towards the end of the 17th century the castle was enlarged, and incorporated into a new earthwork fortress as part of the Old Holland Waterline and later as part of the New Holland Waterline.

By the start of the 19th century, the castle was in decline and had started to crumble. Plans were being drawn up to demolish the site and sell of its stones. King Willem I refused theses proposals after considerable protests, thus saving the castle for generations to come.

The castle was restored in 1895 and between 1948 and 1972 underwent further restoration work. Castle Muiden is now a state run museum and used for cultural events.

Obituaries:Reo Reuters RIP

I met Reo once at a family "braai" (barbeque) at our house many years ago that my mom invited his family to come to . I was about ten and at the age of trying to impress ...so I jumped in the pool in the middle of winter for him ...to show him that I could also do stunts I guess ..for my famous "uncle" lol .

So its with some sadness I found this article tonight ...
