My name is <Josephine Mary( Powers)  Wilson-Shurtleff> and I started this site. John Murdoch originated in Elgin, County of Moray in  Scotland and emigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1700's.  He was a harness maker and married Harriet Hicks from Bridgetown Nova Scotia.  Their son John Murdock Power was born in 1824 and thus the line began.  The name was gradually changed from Murdoch to Power then Powers.

 The family is associated with the Bill family from Billtown Nova Scotia thru marriage.  The Bill family goes back to England where a member of my family tree became Dean of Westminster Abbey in 1550.  William Bill (Doctor of Divinity) died on July 15, 1561 and is buried in the chapel of St. Benedict inside the cloisters of Westminster Abbey complex.

The Fearing family on my mother's side originated from France then emigrated to England . Our first generation John Fearing was born in Cambridge, Suffolk England, and in 1638 emigrated to Hingham, Plymouth Country, Massachusetts.

The Shurtleff family which I am a proud member by marriage  are descendants of William Shurtleff of Plymouth and Marshfield, MA. William Shurtleff was born in England on May 16, 1624, from the parish of Ecclesfield, in West Riding of Yorkshire, in that protion called Hallamshire, he died in Marshfield, MA. on June 23, 1666. The pedigree of Shiercliffe of Ecclesfield Hall, Whitley, Hall, etc.  Arms are a fess between three greyhounds, heads erased sable collars and rings gules.  Crest is on a torce or and sable falchion erect enfiled with a leopards face. Motto  Sola Nobilitas Virtas (Virtue is the only nobility).
