p. 107. "WILLIAM HENRY CLAY JOHNSON. As a young man William Henry ClayJOHNSON (JOHNSTON) moved to Fayette County, Tennessee, joining at leastfive of his ten siblings. He was born in Iredell County, North Carolinaon 10 August, 1818, the youngest child of James JOHNSTON (died 1840), andCassandra NORTHCRAFT (died ca. 1850)... Their other children were [seefile]....

"...On 20 Dec 1838, William h. C. JOHNSON married Repsey STEADHAMdaughter of William and Repsey STEADHAM, of West Tennessee. Althoughtheir marriage license was obtained in Fayette County (Record Book A, p.14) the ceremony was held at Whiteville, Hardeman County, Tennessee byallen SAMMONS, G. G. In 1850 William H. C. and Respey JOHNSON were listedon the federal census in Fayette County with three children: CassandLaura Cornelia (later married to Hon. Jesse Thomas HOLT of Arkansas);James W. M. Lafayetter, (later married to Mattie Cora WILSON of Louisianaand Mississippi); and William A. H. C. JOHNSON, (killed during the CivilWar). William H. C. JOHNSON was listed as a schoolteacher, a professionhe pursued until he died.

Before the birth of their son Curtis L., in October 1853, this familymoved from Fayette County [TN] to Arkansas. their last child, R. Filmore(later married to Mollie E. MCKENNEY), was born on 10 September 1855.Shortly after his birth, Repsey STEADHAM JOHNSON died and was buried inthe Belleville Cemetery, Sevier County, Arkansas.

In 1856 William H. C. JOHNSON married Margaret Matilda DESPAIN,daughter of John D'SPAIN and Margaret REEDER. Before the Civil War, theymoved to Hempstead County, Arkansas, near Nashville, where William andhis two older sons joined the Davis blues, volunteers for the ConfederateArmy. After the war, he moved his family to Hopkins County, Texas. He andMargaret Matilda had eight children [see file]...

This one-time schoolteacher in fayette County died August 3, 1881. Histombstone is located in Pine Forest Cemetery, Hopkins County, Texas.
