farmer - leaseholder on the Royal estates.

Biography

In 1686 someone stole some goats or grain in Tørsbøl, Denmark. The Villagers gathered at Royal Leaseholders, Thomas Hansens' farm. There they carried out an ancient custom but the clergy felt it was a unpious ritual.

The ritual is called Coscinomancy. This is a ritual to discover who the thief was that stole the goats.A sieve was suspended on a pair of scissors. Held over the head of a person and this was followed by a chant. In the name, of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and the Virgin Mary, that you have stolen the goats from the Shepherd's wife. When the sieve turned around three times over Hans Jensen's wife "Anna" it was obvious, that she was the thief. On June 26,1688 all who were at the ritual were summons to court in Grästen. Was not known, but it must be assumed that at least the main ringleaders were sentenced to pay a fine of some sort.At least Thomas Hansen was not burned at the stake since he lived until the 29th of November 1711. Twenty 23 years after the trial ended
