Generation No. 1

1. UNKNOWN1 BLACKWELL was born Abt. 1774. He married UNKNOWN.

Notes for UNKNOWN BLACKWELL:

ID: I15601

Name: Joseph Blackwell

Sex: M

Death: 1854

Note:

Hickory County Blackwells all stem from two brothers, George Washington Blackwell and Joseph Blackwell who came to what was then Polk and Benton counties in Missouri in the early 1830's. (Note:George Washington has been shown to have been born in VA in 1794 so this could be true as the Hiwasee Valley of now TN was at that time, until about 1794 or 1796 a part of Virginia....vjj) They came from the Hiwassee River Valley in what is now Meigs County, Tennessee.Stories do not always coincide. Alma Carlstrom remembered from her grandfather that both families were traveling together with a group along with a third brother. When the group reached the Arkansas River, flooding forced them to remain for some time before crossing. The third brother disappeared, the

family not realizing he was gone until after the crossing. This Arkansas River story could be true if the family was part of the earlier Cherokee removal to Arkansas following the 1829 treaty. However, the Mississippi River seems a more likely point of crossing. The Rev. Jesse Bushyhead was leading a group to Oklahoma in the winter of 1835-36 and upon reaching the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri found it covered with breaking ice. The group was delayed for several weeks. Same story, different river; also a more logical place to lose a brother. (See information of John Lewis Blackwell in this tree....vjj:)

The family of Esther Blythe Blackwell settled in Barry County, Mo. on the Arkansas border. Although several of the Blythe men seem to have married into the Cherokee, there is no evidence that Esther Blythe was of Cherokee origin. The Blythes were people of means, slave holders, and owners of the Blythe ferry across the Tennessee River. Census records indicate that Joseph's 3rd child, Nancy, (1833) was born in Missouri. The birth of his 4th child, James, (1836) in Missouri is well documented. All of the children of George Washington and his first wife were born in Tennessee, the youngest in 1832. Geo. Wash. later married Jennetta McLain from near Quincy and had two more sons. She was thirty years his junior. Blackwell first settled on Lindley Creek, then Polk County, between what is now Pittsburg and Hermitage. A very early map (mid 1830's) lists this location as "the Blackwells". Some time after the Indian lands west of the Pomme de Terre River were opened for settlement in 1835, Joseph Blackwell sold the Lindley Creek farm to Jonas Brown for $200 in gold. The grave of Jonas Brown can be found on this land today. Both brothers then homesteaded Pomme de Terre river bottom farms NW of Hermitage, then Benton County. Both are there in the 1840 census. These farms remained in the family until recently taken by the Truman Lake project. Old timers referred to the section of the "Rocky Ridge Road" that went past these _ farms as "the marrows", meaning a pair or two of a kind.

Blackwell met his death in the spring of 1854. He was shot by a neighbor, a man named Skinner, who was deer hunting. Joseph had taken refuge under a small tree in his pasture from a spring shower. The deer hunter saw movement and shot, killing Joseph. The death was ruled an accident, although there seems to have been some questions. Esther continued to live on the farm which later was purchased by her youngest son, George Washington Blackwell and his wife, Margie Ann (Bettie) Fink.

Joseph's brother, George Washington, seemed to have willed his farm to his youngest son, John. However, this place became the home of Sam Blackwell, Sr., his son, Sam Jr., and later his son Phillip Blackwell. Following the death of George Washington, Charles Whelchel sold the store and moved to Taney County where he died. Of the children of Joseph Blackwell remained in the area except Daniel who went to California and settled at Sutter's Creek. (He drove a herd of whitefaced cows there and never returned to MO as far as is known....vjj)

The name, "Jemima" on the 1860 census with Henderson Bennett was tickling my curiosity. I had used every possible combination from the Bennett families to come up with a clue. Finally, I decided just to look for Jemima in Indiana and Missouri and bingo, up came information that is VERRRY interesting!

p. 27, Sullivan County (we know a lot of our families were there!) Missouri, 1850, Being, 96th District, roll M432-420, page 318

family 172 David Malick 60 years old, m, farmer, Tennessee

Martha 57, f, South Carolina

Catharine, 30, f, Kentucky

Jemima Kelsey, 26, f, Indiana (she's David's daughter and obviously was married and something happens and she's with the father during this census)

Elizabeth Malick 17, f, Indiana

Samuel Malick, 21, m, laborer, Indiana

Dorcas Ann, 21, f, Tenn. (now, what is our Dorcas Ann doing here? Matches age and birth place. And makes perfect sense for Henderson to marry after Jemima. What do you think?)Martha Kelsey, five years old, born in Missouri (matches the child I find with Henderson and Jemima in 1860) Nancy E. (Malick) also same name except for the Malick. Can't read age, but it's more than likely our same child, born in Missouri. She also appears with Jemima and Henderson in 1860.

David M. Kelsey, three years old, m, Missouri, (again, another child found with Jemima and Henderson in 1860)

I am speculating that Henderson is with Jemima after the 1850 census because she does appear with him in 1860. They don't show relationships, but I'm assuming that she's his wife because she appears right after him in the census. Hila E. (Elizabeth, wonder if that was a Grandma's name?) 8, f, born in Missouri, 1852, appears after Jemima's name along with John S. Bennett, 6 years old, m, Missouri, 1854. I wonder if the listing shows us that Hila E. and John S. are the children of the Henderson and Jemima union. What do you think. I cannot find a marriage for Jemima and Henderson at all. I also still haven't found Henderson in 1850. I still think he was living with another family with his wife, Mary Maloney.

David Malick and his family live next door to Edward Rogers who is from Tennessee. He has family members also born in Indiana and Missouri. I don't know if this information is useful or not. It would almost be worth it to see who else lives in Sullivan County in 1850 as far as families go to see if there's a link.

Since children start appearing with Dorcas Ann Blackwell and Henderson Bennett about 1864, we estimate the marriage about 1864, but I don't have a marriage record either. I just think he knew Dorcas already with the relationship I just found with Jemima Malick Kelsey. Maybe I should search for Henderson the same way I did for Jemima. Any other ideas? I could sure use them to find Henderson in 1850 to see who he is living with. He could have left Missouri because of his Daddy's death in 1846. We have him leaving with Madison Bennett to Illinois. Then we have Valentine Myers having a child in Illinois. Henderson has children born in Indiana so somewhere, some families did travel or join up in Indiana and Illinois and possibly even Iowa.

At this point, I really feel that Hila E. and John S. Bennett are Jemina's children, but I can't prove it. This was a great find today. I am so VERY happy about it!

, I searched the 1870 census. Here, I find Henderson Bennett in the Scott Township, Taney County, Missouri. This time he is listed as 47 years of age which makes more sense since that makes him born in 1823, the year we had him approximated at. He works on his farm and is estimated at $300. Again, he is shown to have been born in Tennessee which definitely changes the information.

Hila E. is now 18 years of age and is at home in Missouri. John S. Bennett is also now 16 years of age. However, four children are missing. Two could be deceased and two could be married. They include Nancy E., Edward H., David M. Kelsey and Martha J.

The wife in 1870 is our Dorcas A. She is shown as 38 years of age from Missouri. Now, it gets interesting. The next three children are all shown to be born in Indiana. Here's what I'm a thinking.....our Jemima, first wife, dies between 1860 and 1864. Henderson goes back to Indiana for burial or funeral arrangements. He probably marries right away and stays in Indiana long enough to have three children by Dorcas A. Blackwell:

The family says he died at Chadwick, Christian Co, MO but no marker has been found there. Some of the children of Winfield Blackwell that was the son of Dock and Lottie could recall Winfield telling of him walking down the railroad tracks from town to the cemetery for the burial. This matches with the location of the Chadwick cemetery which is about a quarter of a mile south I think of town today. Chadwick was the end of the track from Springfield and never went any farther and is now gone but the grade is there. We do not know why they were living in that area. Hickory Co. CEN. Notes for ELIZABETH ANN FRYE:

4 Oct 1850, Aug 1870, Dist 37, Hickory co. MO. census. Widow's pension of Lottie 1892, military records of Daniel Bartshe. Wilson's History of Hickory County. Wilson shows Daniel Bartshe's first wife as Eliza Ann Fry but on pension records 6 May 1898, Daniel says his wife's name was Lavina Freeman. 1850 census shows Eliza Ann Fry 18, TN living with Daniel and Lavina. Also a Robert H. McCann 7, MO. (His last name not clear). Eliza Ann Fry first married William F. Doc Blackwell. He lived next door in 1850. I think Lavina was probably married to a Fry first and is the mother of Eliza Ann Fry. Lavina may be sister of Silas Freeman. Lavina's grave has no marker.

I believe this part of her being married to William F. Blackwell has the wrong Elizabeth Frye as his wife. I believe it is her daughter 18 in 1850 who marry's him. I also believe Elizabeth Frye Blackwell named a daughter Lavina (my line) after her mother the wife of Daniel Bartshe.

She professed faith in Christ in September 1888 and united with the Missionary Baptist church, and has lived a consistent member until death.

Several years ago she left Missouri, with her family, and moved to the Indian Territory. (now Oklahoma). She had gone through many a hardship since then. She had been in poor health for seven years, but aunt Susie was a devoted wife and a kind mother. When any of her family was sick she did more than she was able. Although her last sickness was but a few days her suffering was intense, but she bore it with patience. All that medical aid could do was of no avail. All of her family was present at her death, except two who came later. She. expressed herself as being ready and prepared to go at any time the summons was called. Children follow her footsteps so that when death's messenger is sent you too may be ready and prepared to go.

Funeral services were held in Big Cabin Baptist church October by the pastor, Bro. W. F. Parker of Vinita, and her remins (sic) were laid to rest in the Big Cabin cemetery among a number of sorrowing relatives and friends in presence to await the resurrection morn. Children weep not; she Is not dead but sleeping.

Call not back the dear departed. Anchored safe where storms -are o're; On the border land we left them, Soon to meet and part no more. When we leave this world of Sorrow,

When we leave this world of care, We shall find our missing loved ones

In our Father's mansion fair.
