Sije Dirks (Seye) Wiersma

In 1811 Napoleon decreed that all heads-of-house must register their family name, first choosing one if they did not already have one. This was chiefly for taxation purposes. Before that time, many Frisians relied on the patronym—name of the father—for identification. In Sye’s case, his father was Dirk, so Sye’s patronym was Dirks. In 1811 he registered the surname Wiersma. He was living in Marrum and had four children living at the time:
