BiographyHe died 6 months after his father's death in the hospital in Holmfirth after an operation for cancer of the bowel. Sara Ann was with him and he said "don't put the children into mourning for me", and then "I'm glad I am dying first, you will manage everything better than me". When he died all the shops in Holmfirth closed and people lined the street all the way to the chapel and the chapel was full of his friends. He was liked and respected by everyone who knew him. He was a member of the Free Masons.Before WWI he joined the territorial army and was soon called up for active service. he had very poor eyesight so spent some time on coast guard duty at Whitby and Scarboro. he received a commission and trained new recruits at rifle practice. He was a good shot, and kept in practice culling rooks at SEH's Rookery. Esther loved the rook pies, which were delicious.
