BiographyMarian was already at Leeds University when Bernard was born, and Esther does not ever remember her living at home. She was very beautiful and dainty with long, dark-brown hair and always seemed to be gay and laughing, she obviously loved being at home with the family. She met HWO after WWI whilst he was also at Leeds University. Marian's degree was in History and afterwards she taught at a girl's boarding school near Taunton. (ref. Esther)She graduated from Leeds University- BA Hons in History, Class 2, 1919. No index card exists for her in the Central Records Office.Admon: In His Majesty's High Court of Justice. Registrar Extracted by 'the Administrator' She wrote a number of letters from Leeds to her Mum, mentioning family members, illnesses, etc. Not dated so the order is tricky. FJO has photocopies? She studied for a History degree at Leeds University, where she met HWO. Professor Grant was one of her lecturers. The person who was Warden of her hostel was later Mary's principal at St Hughes, Barbera Gwyer. Someone who interviewed Mary at Westfield College knew both Marian and HWO, and wrote HWO a note: "her mother lives on in her".Mary's notes: Marian did a teacher training course (after her History degree) and went on to teach at Bishop Foxe's school at Taunton. Mary has copies of references to her in the school magazine and then marriage probably ended the career but she continued to be interested in craft things. She made some service books for Mary and Michael which were amazing considering. Edith's writings give some idea of the London days around Mary's birth because she stayed with them.FJO remembers going to the grave with Michael- it had a small pink stone. To find the grave take the first path on the right after entering the gates- this leads you it. The grave is near the corner of the right-hand block you come to. Reads- 'Of Your Charity; Pray for the soul of; Marian; Beloved Wife of; Herbert Woodford Orton; 19th June 1928, Aged 29 years.'Visited by PNO 14 April 2001- site was a little overgrown, but in surprisingly good condition.
