Biography

Christian DeGroot came to America with his parents in 1861 and settled in Germany Valley, Illinois. His wife Bertha Geerdes came with her parents to America in 1862 from Ostfriesland or Lower Saxony, Germany. (Family records say it was the town of Amtiverner, but there is no such place. There is a town of Weener in Ostfriesland, and Verden in Lower Saxony.

Christian and Bertha lived in Illinois until November 1886, then moved to a farm 4 miles east of George, Iowa. In 1898 they moved into town at Ashton, Iowa.
