Franz Karl Leis and wife Rosina Barbara Hermann came to Australia in 1855 on board the schooner Undine from Neckersulem in South West Germany, They already had two children born to them in Germany, eight more were to be born after their arrival in Australia, The Port of departure was Hamburg,Germany and port of arrival in Australia was Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.this information was given to me by John Leis. I have also accessed an article by a Joan Starr titled Tremendous Terminus from pub to family home: re the Leis family of Tenterfield NSW. Franz known in Australia as Charles purchased land on December 9,1881 from James Parker, a hotel was built on this 2 acres and 2 roods, it began as single-storey structure, the second storey was added about 1894, the upper storey is now home to Crieg Leis and his wife while the ground floor has been turned into flats. Thomas Leis my Grandfathers older brother was the last Publican to pull ale to draw ale there and it was Thomas who had the top storey added in 1894. Crieg Leis is the grandson of Thomas Leis. This article re the Leis family is available from the Trove Library in Canberra.
