Thomas was the sixth child and fifth son of Nicholas and Elizabeth, born in Sydney on llth December 1812. He was the first Delaney to live at Moyne Farm, though he never owned the block of land on which the farmhouse, arguably the oldest surviving private dwelling west of the Nepean River, was built. Thomas and other Delaneys bought parcels of land to enlarge the farm, but the central block of fifty acres, promised in 1821 and formally granted to John Grant "the Father of Hartley" in 1839 and extended by his purchase of the adjoining 160 acres in 1837, remained in his possession and that of his heirs until 1909.

It was there John Delaney's younger brother Thomas settled with his wife, Lucy Simpson, a "currency lass", the colony-born daughter of two convicts. Both had been convicted of theft and sentenced to (transportation from England to Australia for seven years.
